Can't Dial

Post by della25 »

MJ worked ok for months, now I have a dial tone but can't dial. Press a number on my keypad and it is ignored. Can dial with the MJ display. Tried tech support but don't have days to spend on the telephone.

Does it work using the softphone? If yes, have you tried using a powered USB hub?

I think you missed the point.
It worked for the past 7-8 months.
Now I can't dial out with the phone.
Yes, Softphone works ok.

I can't explain the sudden onset of the problem. But, I would try a powered USB hub. And/or a different handset.

OK, I tried a powered hub, then tried another phone.
Then tried a different PC.
Still have the same problem.

Sounds like the USB device is broken.

The USB device contains essentially an ATA device to convert your analog phone to digital signals, and recognize touch tones, etc. The softphone doesn't require that circuitry. If that circuitry went bad, the softphone could continue to work.

It's the only thing I can think of if you've tried a powered USB hub, other handsets, and other computers.

OK, narrowed it down to...
It will dial out from a phone IF there is a area code with the number.
It won't dial out without an area code.
Even local calls.

It now requires all numbers start with 1.
I don't recall it ever doing that before.

There you go. In the world of VoIP there is no distinction between a "local" call and a "long distance" call. MJ is no different from any other provider in this regard.

Even though you pay a flat rate for MJ service, MJ must pay real money by the minute for each successful outbound call. When you have seven digit and ten digit dialing available to you there is a large exposure to dialing a wrong number. A pause between the seventh and eighth digit of a "long distance" call will cause that call to be delivered to a wrong party in your Area Code. For example, if you are trying to call 213-555-2368 and pause too long while dialing, you will end up connected to 213-5552 in your own Area Code. MJ will have paid out for your wrong number.

So, MJ has a real, and legitimate, incentive to force all customers to dial all eleven digits for every phone call.

Down again...
Sunday, I could make calls from my phone system.
Now it stopped accepting outbound calls from the phone system.
Dialing 1-area-number.
I've rebooted the PC system twice.
I've used the MJ fix/updater.
I can callout with the softphone.

Just for chits&giggles, try a # after diling the number, I don't know why and I'm no guru, but I have had the problem of not completing a call and the # somehow signals the line that you are finished dialing and the ringing is sometimes immediately following :?
