MJ kills minimac

Post by medicis »

my MJ had been working acceptably.. Now, however, if it is plugged into a USB when I start my minimac, the computer won't start. When I start my mini and then plub in the MJ the mac dies. Doesn't appear to be any damage to the Mac because it will then start w/o the MJ.

Any ideas? Is there any replacement policy for MJ's ... ?

thanks from North Carolina.....

Do you have a powered hub laying around? If so, try the MJ from it and see if that resolves the issue. I wonder if the MJ is trying to pull more power than the minimac wants to give.

Thanks for your reply. Subsequent to your suggestion, I did try plugging it into my USB Powered hub ... but the hub is 1.0 and the MJ sat there and no blue light.

So I tried putting it into the #1 USB 2.0 on the MM and no blue light and after a few seconds the MM shut down. Again, thankfully, no damage to the MM.

So my guess is that it's fried for some reason. Is there any way to replace it, or will I have to purchase another one, do you think? And who would I contact?

Anyway, thanks for your help and time. Really appreciate it.

Talk to them via chat and see what they can do.

Now this might sound a little stupid, because I'm slightly computer illiterate, ESPECIALLY when it comes to macs but could it be possible its trying to boot up from the USB device?

I would have gone there, except for the fact that he says that plugging the MJ into the working computer crashes the computer.

Being a Mac person I'd say there are a couple of possibilities.

First, unplug all USB devices except the keyboard and the mouse (the mouse should be plugged into the keyboard. If you have a non-apple Keyboard/mouse, especially a PS/2 keyboard using a ps/2 to usb converter, unplug the keyboard completely once your mini is up and running and just plug in the mouse. Then, plug in the MJ. If it still takes down the mini, it's either the MJ or the USB controller in the mini.

Had problems recently with a mini I have here at home where it turned out that the printer was actually causing the machine to crash when there were too many other USB devices connected.. High power USB devices can be nasty that way.

As suggested, a powered USB 2 hub could solve all your problems.

Thanks all for your suggestions ...

As I noted in my first post, all had been working ...harmoniously ...... and I will add now, for a few months... With everything plugged in etc. Then it stopped.

I think I will contact the folks at MJ....

thanks everybody.
