SIP/Proxy on freestanding device, proxy1 or vms1?

Post by arcadia2uk »

Until now, I have used the proxy1.xxx.talk4free.com both as the SIP and the proxy address when using a freestanding device such as ATA or VoIP phone.
However, when reading postings about blocking MJ servers there is also talk about vms1.xxx.talk4free.com.
http://www.phoneservicesupport.com/post32062.html#32062

Now my question becomes, if I have to block two IP's in order to have MJ to connect to a different server, shouldn't I use these two IP's when connecting through SIP?
i.e. SIP = vms1 and proxy = proxy1 , or does this have something to do with voicemail?

Maybe I'm just thinking too much...
Thanks for your input.
Regards,

I think that the vms address associates with the rtp protocol which is the actual voice traffic and that the proxy address is the one you should be controlling your location with and that the mj server will automatically pick the right vms server based on the proxy - at least that's what I think according to az2008's wiki.

No, vms has nothing to do with voicemail. It is a server for the rtp voice packets as explained in the wiki -

As best as I can figure out,

Everyone else calls it a SIP server; MJ calls it a Proxy server.

Everyone else calls it a Proxy server; MJ calls it a VMS server.

It is possibly an attempt at security through obfuscation, but it could just be labels that came with the original software package they bought.
