Anyone using an older laptop (or computer with USB1.1)??

Post by gtburgin »

Im considering buying an older model IBM Thinkpad laptop to host the MagicJack. The one issue I see is that the laptop has USB 1.1 ports instead of 2.0. Has anyone had any experiences with trying to get a MJ to work on older Thinkpad laptops and/or computers with older USB support (e.g. ver 1.1 ports)???
Thanks for any help

I don't know about the ability for magicJack to run on USB 1.1, however, if you are getting a good deal, you can always purchase a USB 2 PC Card for the laptop. They run anywhere from $10 on eBay to about $30 in stores.

I remember reading others who said it worked on USB 1.1. But, there may be more chance of a power problem. More reason to buy a powered USB hub.

One of my magicJacks was running successfully for a few months on the following:
  • Dell Latitude C800 Laptop (circa 2000),
  • Intel Mobile Pentium III 1GHz CPU,
  • 512MB RAM,
  • 250GB Hard Drive,
  • 15" UXGA TFT 1600 x 1200 Active Matrix Display,
  • Windows XP Professional w/SP3,
  • OpenOffice.org, and
  • 802.11b/g Wireless Networking via Linksys WPC54G PCMCIA Card.
NOTE: This laptop has two USB Revision 1.10 ports.

The reason magicJack is no longer running on this machine is because it is now my Skype telephony server.

I don't believe that you will encounter any problems running magicJack on the Thinkpad. magicJack's only stated requirement is Windows XP or Windows Vista.

Good luck!
Thank you.

Lisa :)

I would have thought the same about my Dell Inspiron 9300 with XP Pro but it has never worked regardless of all the hoops Ive jumped through.

I'm running MJ on a 1.1GHz Celeron box with USB 1.1 - no problem.

The dongle is a USB 1.1 device.

It would be for the benefit of other devices that a USB 2.0 host interface be installed.
