Very long help sessions without success

Post by yabrudi »

I was taken by the advertisement and paid for 6 years of service. Received the MagicJack in two days and I could not install it. I called the chat help and was given from agent of level 1 to agent of level 2 then 3. In over an hour, unableing the Firewall, the virusscan and opening 2 new ports the magicjack was installed. Today I could not call out the magictouch in spite of hearing the dial tone. Contacted the chat help again and was juggled again from low level agent to high level. Worked for over 45 minutes and finally was directed to the Universal Bus Controller section in the Device Manager and was told to update each driver of the 7 Bus Controllers and reboot the computer each time. THIS IS AN IMPOSSIBLE AND TIME CONSUMING PROCEDURE. There is no way to get a written troubleshooting manual from the site, I will have to return the equipment if every time I will have to go through hese steps. CAN ANYBODY HELP ME TROUBLESHOOT IT?

It normally runs without any problem. I would get an ata from ebay and set it up so you don't have to mess with your pc. It runs much better on the ata. Hope that helps.

LW, at $40 for the device and first year's service, MJ is not for everyone. However, if you have the patience to read through the postings on the forum before asking questions that are answered in abundance already, you will find that the MJ can be quite rewarding.

Up at the top of the forum is a Search button. If, for example, you search on ATA you will find your answer. If you search for other topics you will find answers there. If you look through all of the forum categories, as I always do before beginning to post in a newly joined forum (just ask anyone who recognizes my handle), you will see that most questions are already answered.

Another thing you'll learn by reading through other people's postings is how to describe your symptoms in a manner that one of the other volunteer members here can understand in order to give you good advice. For example, you say "blue screen", but not the actual error message, you do not say who "they" are, you do not describe what "iffy" means, nor whether the "it" you plan to throw away is your MJ, your PC or even your old "Members Only" jacket.

By the way, an ATA is an "Analog Terminal Adapter."

Thank you for taking the time to reply, and straighting me out . I'll take a shot at this. to me $40.00 I've not even reached 6 months, and have nothing but problems besides in my world$40.00 is a lot of money I can not afford to trow around.I understand your point. I did read various treads on other site sounds like quite a few problems same as my, so I'm very reelected to plug in the MJ that this may not be suited to me. I bought MJ in 5-08 DT00464920, and had audio problems since choppy, the person onther end could not hear me. Recently I have gotten the broken storage . This after I reinstalled all the usb drivers. The blue screen I received and problems with my computer concern me.Let see if I remember correctly it was if this is the fist time for this then do that,I did keep on tying with MJ, but still having problems syncing my pda from usb ports that i feel are damaged. I've installed, tried to install, but I receive a notice the path is not good windows sync my OS is XP. I did look at the ATA, but not sure what I doing with it.Yes maybe Sype, or anther Voip would be better for me would be better. Thanks, LW

LW, thank you for writing again. I understand that you are having problems, but unfortunately my comment about $40 seems to have caused some confusion.

In the world of VoIP services, $40 is a very small amount of money. Most VoIP service plans cost $15-20 per month, and the ones that make life easiest for the consumer cost even more each month. In this industry, you tend to pay more for the level of support that you receive than you do for the actual service. In this light, those of us who are very familiar with VoIP services understand that when you buy the equipment for $20 instead of $60 and spend $1.67 per month instead of $20 per month for the service you can expect to receive a very weak level of support.

As expected, at this low price, support from MJ is quite weak. That is why this forum is so popular. People who actively participate here are happy to build "sweat equity" in the product and service. That is exactly my attitude. I would rather contribute to this forum than pay additional dollars to MJ.

So, it is up to you to make your own choice. If you wish, you can leave MJ behind and pay a "real" VoIP service company (Vonage, or their ilk) more money in return for Customer Service people who know what they are doing and can properly address any problems you encounter. Or, if you are so inclined, you can stay here and work together with our corps of volunteers to get your problems sorted out.

Welcome aboard.

Ive used mj for almost a year with few problems even in an area that is very backwater for ATT dsl equipment.

1st level cs usually sucks. 2nd Ive found is 50/50.

Blowing off 1st level is easy... just ask to be forwarded to Ron at Level 2.

Im running low speed dsl, 768k / 128k and have had very few problems.

Be aware that the indian side of cs loves to reformat mj not making sure you have your address book backed up. If you have any doubt, ASK, before you initiate any suggested cs command.

Better yet, backup your address book prior to even getting on with cs.

MJ chat support is in the Philippines. Not that it matters much. I just hate to see Indian support get blamed for everything.
