No Complaints
I've had my magicJack for over a year now, and I really can't say I have any complaints. For the price, there is no service that even comes close. There have been a few minor glitches, but nothing I couldn't work out.
I feel badly for all those who have had issues. Part of the problem is that there are so many different PC configurations out there, and sometimes magicJack doesn't play nice with them.
Overall, I have been pleased, and hope this service continues for a long time.

Re: No Complaints
Do you really believe all the people who are reporting problems making calls (and hearing anything) changed their configurations?VoipDude wrote:Part of the problem is that there are so many different PC configurations out there, and sometimes magicJack doesn't play nice with them.

Mark,
You misunderstood my post.
I did not state anything about people "changing" their configuration. I stated that there are so many different PC configurations out there, meaning every computer has different software, programs, firewalls, virus programs, etc., running, which can affect magicJack performance, as well as cause conflicts or issues.

Yet when they install Skype or vbuzzer.com, and make a test call they have no problem?VoipDude wrote:I stated that there are so many different PC configurations out there, meaning every computer has different software, programs, firewalls, virus programs, etc., running, which can affect magicJack performance, as well as cause conflicts or issues.

For Skype, it is likely because Skype an instant messaging platform that permits voice payloads in its messages, as opposed to being a SIP platform. As such, and also being a closed protocol, they are free to pursue connectivity in any manner they wish.az2008 wrote:Yet when they install Skype or vbuzzer.com, and make a test call they have no problem?
For vbuzzer.com, it is likely because they don't rely upon client device constraints to protect their ToS from abuse. Unlike MJ, Vbuzzer only has local unlimited plans. So, they charge by the minute for calls outside your local calling area to other destinations in Canada or to the US. With Vbuzzer you are permitted to use any softphone or hardware device you wish. You may download their softphone, if you wish. But, if it doesn't work well in your particular configuration you are completely at liberty to substitute any other SIP softphone you desire or use a hardware device.
I agree. But, how does that make them more immune to differences in customer computer configuration?mberlant wrote:For Skype, it is likely because Skype an instant messaging platform that permits voice payloads in its messages, as opposed to being a SIP platform. SIP handles very little traffic. RTP handles the bulk of traffic. Both are simply standardized protocols to get a particular job done. Neither protocol would be more or less inclined to customer hardware/software conflicts than custom implementations (using HTTP, for example).
I'm not buying the argument that the people having problems with MJ are only thus because they have a cheap, Chinese-made motherboard. Or, clicked on a few too many greeting cards. Or, installed browser toolbars, etc. I've seen too many people say they switched to a different VOIP service and report 100% improvement.
I do agree that the way MJ (needlessly) makes the USB dongle integral to the services use can lead to over-complicated installs. I think it would be simpler if the service used a downloadable softphone, and provided an optional USB ATA device. That would help isolate installation incompatibilities. It might also help users think about reverting back to softphone only when they suffer from low-power problems.

Skype's closed protocol does not make them immune. Rather, it makes them flexible.
MJ's softphone is subject to the limitations of SJPhone, which is customized for MJ but not modified (the SIP client engine remains untouched), and the U3 half of the dongle that controls the configuration and security bits of the installation.
I also don't believe that the hardware complement has anything to do with anyone's problems, save for the way the software works with them. There is nothing magical about putting a TigerJet chipset and a U3 chipset inside the same piece of plastic, hardware-wise. It's the "magic sauce" that is mucking up some people's works.

I don't believe the software complement does either. There's nothing about the bits sent for SIP (control information) or RTP (voice stream) that could be fouled up (such as recent "fade out," "no audio" and "choppy voice" reports) by someone's computer hardware or software configuration any more than Skype's proprietary implementation of those same transmission functions.mberlant wrote:I also don't believe that the hardware complement has anything to do with anyone's problems,
As far as I can tell, the only thing about MJ that is susceptible to a users hardware/software configuration is the USB/ATA device. Which is why I've said in the past that it seems like a bad idea for MJ to predicate usage upon that device.
Also, running dongleless is a good way to eliminate that as the problem (if someone can get past the initial installation steps).

Mark,
I have enjoyed many of your posts over the last few months. That said, you seem to go out of your way to be argumentative on occasion. This is such an occasion. The OP says that "Part of the problem" is multiple configurations. He didn't claim advanced degrees or experience in the field, just his thoughts. You pounced on him and asked if he thought "all" those people changed their configurations. Lighten up.

Sorry. I interpreted the comment about user hardware/software configuration as being a problem "part of the time" (in the context of praising MJ for faultless operation) to be denying other problems exist. I.e., focusing on the least occurrence of problems; that when people do have problems, it's this.cdwaldron wrote:The OP says that "Part of the problem" is multiple configurations. Saying user hardware/software configurations is "part of the problem" leaves out a lot of problems that are far more common (lately) than the occasional install problem, or Nero incompatibility.
If I were going to throw a bone to those having problems, it would be an admission that they're having problems due to things that are in MJ's control (infrastructure breakdown, poor change control, lack of notice when changes/outages occur, oversold/overloaded servers).

LOL az2008 has ran alot of good folks away from this site, i rarly even come here any longer because all he likes to do is argue with people, thank goodness those good folks he ran off invited me to a private forum that dont have people running behind every post and demeaning the poster. Keep an eye here, he will be all over this like white on rice.

From where I sit, az2008's contributions here are well above 99% helpful. From time to time we all react too quickly due to fatigue or stress or some other factor in our lives and we have to be reminded of what we overlooked. Mark has done that for me, and I appreciate that support. I believe we owe him that much.

I'm afraid I have to disagree. This is the 'Rants & Raves' section so if somebody goes off on occasion this is the place to do it. Marks contributions are priceless and one needs to develope a thick skin and the ability to ignore posts when necessary. That is the nature of open public forums.
Good luck to all.
Good luck to all.

I agree - Mark has helped
I agree - I think Mark has done a great job helping out in the forum and helping it to stayed focused.
I also agree that this is the "Rant and Rave" section and except for personal attacks on Dan (which I think should be deleted) anything goes.
