I have dsl connection (earthlink) but, of course, I must maintain a DSL telephone line.
So, just how do I use MagicJack without paying for the at DSL line???? ... I must have a service provider.

You are right, you must have some sort of broadband internet service, whether it be DSL, FiOS, cable, etc. MJ does not work without you already having a high speed internet service. You don't necessarily have to maintain your landline from the same provider, but you probably get a discount for having both. I have cable internet, but not their phone service, I use Vonage as my primary phone service, I also have a cell phone and a MJ. I personally would not consider MJ as a replacement for a landline, it has not proved to be that reliable yet. One should also have a cell and/or other phone service. MJ is an inexpensive way to have a phone line with free calling to the US and Canada. I also get that with Vonage, plus free calls to a few European countries, but it comes to about $30/month, where as MJ is $20/year and $20 for the hardware. It can be a very inexpensive option for people with loved ones over seas, as they have a US phone # to call and leave VM at, and they can call back to the US for no additional cost. My brother-in-law just got back from Turkey and was able to keep in touch with the family for not much expense. Don't get me wrong, MJ and how it is marketed have some problems, but I guess my expcetations for this product have been pretty low just because of how little it costs. I wish Dan wouldn't be so sleazy with the ad campaign.

You can try calling your landline provider and ask them if they will provide a dry dsl loop (DSL without phone service.) It will cost more than if you have landline service, but they may do it. I have Verizon, and in some areas they will provide DSL without phone service, but not in my area.billyjo wrote:I have dsl connection (earthlink) but, of course, I must maintain a DSL telephone line.

You could always cut your landline to basic message rate service with no extras as a way of limiting phone costs.
