Outgoing calls dropped then dialtone

Post by kriscrash4x4 »

thought i would post a new thread because i dont have a linksys router.
all i have is 1 computer and 1 mj.

I've been talking with magicjack live help and they have told me
its one of 4 things connection, internet provider, my computer
or my mj. my dad has a mj as well and he also has this problem but not as bad as me his only does it once and a while so im gonna rule out connection and internet provider. he and i have the same internet provider.
Next i will try to take my mj to my sisters and try on her computer and see if its my mj or my computer she has a diffrent internet provider than me and my dad.
this is what magicjack has asked me to do.

my problem really gets out of hand when i try to call my landline 10 times
in a row they usually drops by the second call and that second call dosent
always go through it drops on the landline end but not on the magicjack
then if i try to call another number the magicjack stops working it might work if i reboot the computer and leave it off for a few hours
i dont have any problem with incoming calls.

im canadian and im trying to use this as my primary phone so i gotta figure this out it has taken me about 15 hours to get to this point with magicjack.com live help. im just trying to save people time because
it takes time to make progress chatting with the live help
i will let yous know my results

Hi,

Since you're in Canada what American area code did you pick?

I've read through your post several times but am unsure about when you mean by "calls drop then dialtone". Can I assume you are able to establish a connection, are able to talk for some time, then the call drops suddenly?

Have you done any voip tests? Do a google search for "voip test" and there are several lik this one http://myspeed.visualware.com/voip/. Post your results, better yet, post a link to your results so we can see all the data. At a minimum, your MOS score should be in the high threes. A score of 4.0 is excellent. But there are other factors to consider as well

What ISP provider are you with? I'm in western Canada, on Shaw regular high speed, and my MJ works fine.

Some other thoughts:
- What else are you doing on your computer when you talk? Anything intensive that involves downloads or uploads?

- Is there a time of day when you get disconnected more than other times?

Good luck.

Also, since i've just run into this - are you using a cordless phone and a wireless router? My cordless phone and router were 'fighting' with each other for a channel... Sometimes the phone would knock the wireless router off, sometimes the router would knock the cordless phone (and the call) off. When I changed the router's channel the conflict went away.

Hi,
Regarding using MJ as your primary phone, won't everyone calling you need to dial long distance (other than the folks in the 315 calling area, where ever that is)? Are there US area codes that are local calls to Canadian numbers? Maybe in Eastern Canada? But not out west.

315 is in central New York State, in the Syracuse area.

There are some border town pairs in Vermont/Québec, New Hampshire/Québec, Maine/Québec and Maine/New Brunswick that enjoy local calling, but MJ has no numbers that I know of in these border towns. Besides, Canadian callers would only be able to reach the Canadian side of any of these town pairs by dialing a Canadian phone number.

Other border pairs, like Niagara Falls, ON/NY and Detroit, MI/Windsor, ON do not enjoy such free local calling.
