Is it ok to run the magicjack 24/7?
I have a GATEWAY MT3418 laptop that I use pretty much everyday. My magic jack is always connected to this laptop. Before I got the magicjack I would use my laptop whenever I was home, then when I would go out, I'd just close the lid and it would go into hibernate mode. Magicjack had some issues with me doing that while it was connected to my laptop. For example, whenever I came back home and logged on, MagicJack would keep restarting itself over and over. So to fix this I disabled hibernation mode and now I leave my computer running all day, and turn it off at night. I don't really like to do this because of chip creep and all. So should I just leave my laptop on forever? Its the only phone I have. It would be nice if Magicjack was ok with going into hibernate mode.
I leave my main PC and two laptops on 24/7. Chip creep should not be a problem with your model of laptop. I would be more worried about computer temp as laptops focus more on size and less on cooling since they expect it to be off allot. I would keep the duct work clean and place the laptop where it will get good airflow at the vents.
As you already know by reading the previous posts on this forum, the MJ stops working when you sleep/hibernate/shut off the hosting PC. You will not receive any phone calls if the PC is not alive and running. If this is problematic for you, you should follow the advice on one of the many threads that talk about alternative clients you may be able to use withe MJ service.
I have two MJs on thin clients that run 24/7 with no problem whatsoever.

I run my PCs 24x7 including my MJ machine. BTW, I have a 1989 vintage Gateway PC with a 386DX processor sitting right next to me in my office that has run 24x7 for nearly its (almost) entire 20 year life and it just keeps humming along running UNIX. It doesn't do much anymore (only 8M ram and 300M hard drive) but I don't have the heart at this point to shut it down.
Re: Is it ok to run the magicjack 24/7?
I keep all five computers on in my home 24/7, including the eMachine I have my MJ hooked up to (plus 2 other eMachines) plus My IMac, and my laptop.
The MJ handles it.

One thing to try with your laptop is to set the power settings to shut the monitor and harddrive off after a period of inactivity (but not for the laptop to go into hibernation). Give it a test and see if MJ will accept an incoming call with the hard drive off. I'm not sure how much data for the MJ is stored on the hard drive and and whether the short delay to spin up again will affect being able to receive incoming calls.
Initially I had my MJ plug into a laptop I was also running my external monitor. But I was only using the MJ for outgoing long-distance calls. When I made a call, there was a slight delay while the hard drive spun up but there was no effect on being able to make calls.
If this is your only phone, you might consider the thin client for MJ. For me a thin client (T5700) has proven very reliable and sits quietly in the corner consuming about the same power as a night light. Plus it's driving my external monitor and streaming Internet radio.
Got you beat by a factor 5!Matt9876 wrote:Except for a few reboots it's been on 24/7 for a year now.
I have one laptop for a specialized purpose (running Windows 200) that I've had on continuously for over 4 years now. I have to reboot it about every 10 days or so because resources run low, but other than that it just keeps on ticking!
As far as the MJ device, it doesn't mind. As a matter of fact, I think it's even better to simply keep it energized as long as it does not overheat. Chips don't like the jolt they get when voltage starts flowing.
So, damion_dark8, other than your laptop maybe complaining (although I doubt it), I'd simply keep your computer on with the MJ connected.
