Do Not Disturb
They eliminated the Do Not Disturb feature.
I asked why.
They said that people were forgetting to turn off the feature.
I don't believe that for a moment.

Re: Do Not Disturb
Mine never worked right. If I turned on DND people would get a recording saying "this user is out of the service area." It was supposed to go to voice mail.hrislxb wrote:They said that people were forgetting to turn off the feature.

It wouldn't turn off unless I restarted MJ.
That's probably why they removed it as a feature. Using their logic, people forget to disable call forwarding too. Better get rid of it.
If it was really a problem they could have changed the color of the softphone to a red tint.

Dan has gotten a little better in the area of sleazy marketing tactics. For example, he changed the wording of the 30-day trial that said "Hurry, offer ends today" every day. Now it just says that it's limited to the first few thousand purchasers each day.cell14 wrote:How did they get the A- rating from BBB remains a mystery. They must do something right.
And, he added some definition (still nebulous, but at least he can say it's "defined") to "excessive use." Also, the last accounts I heard of people being terminated for "excessive use" were handled better. The users were informed of what was wrong (instead of given a telephone number nobody answered). Chat support was aware of the terminations (instead of telling people "there are no limits.").
It was Dan's fast-and-loose treatment of the truth that caused the depth of bitterness among complainers. That's where the BBB said they wanted to see some improvement.
But, I think everyone knows the BBB is a bit of an extortion racket. If you're not a member they won't go to bat for you. If you pay the dues, they'll pave over complaints. In other words, a non member might have a C rating for activities that a paying member will get an A+.
As a businessman, Dan was smart to abandon his criticism of the BBB, pay the money, and put that problem behind him. As a "consulting fee" it helped a little to get some of his more obviously shameless behaviors to improve. But, the real value was just to buy off the BBB and stop all the people posting his *atrocious* record in millions of internet forums.
I think the moral of the story is: No honor among thieves.

I want the DND feature back, I used it when I dont want my kid getting calls. Now I have to unplug the MJ from the USB port everytime I dont want her to have calls. This will cause wear and tear on the usb jack / port....
Also, what happend to the startup program requireing a login user id and password?
Please give us back these features that are listed on the packaging and the Users Manual.

If you want to be heard, use the wiki FAQ for contact info to MJ's senior leadership team.PEN311 wrote:Please give us back these features that are listed on the packaging and the Users Manual.
You might also mention that a "recent news" page would be nice to announce upgrades, the changes associated with an upgrade, and outages. New area-code/prefix. Etc.

My feeling is that he enjoys pathological behavior above anything. Most of this does not make any business sense.az2008 wrote:

The only thing I understand that he does not want to spend too much on customer service. With this business model the economics just are not there ( allthough he could tell his crew to stop making those famous registry hacks on chat sessions). But with everything else, he could make things so much better with little effort. Ingenious, talented people have often a bizzare side.
Do Not Disturb
I'd like it back too. I only use the MJ for outgoing calls and both number's I've received from them have been on telemarketeer's lists. One was a SAMs Club collection agency, they called multiple times every day despite never getting through with DND on.
DND feature gone
WTF Today i go to use the single most useful feature on the MJ and its gone.
The Do Not Disturbed feature has been a lifesaver, keeping me from blowing a gasket because my annoying girlfriend calls me way too damn much. Anyway tried to edit the registry and it only reverts back to a big fat 0. Talked to tech support and "kiefer" actually said that as to my suggestion that they give us smarter people an option to either edit the registry or just simply turn on a pre-disabled feature- that he will mention it to the engineers.
seriously i doubt this but hey, all the dummies out there that use MJ complained till they disabled this feature so i'm thinking if all us smarter folk actually complained to give us an hidden option or something maybe we can get it back. Anyone else have a better idea?

Same problem; same "lack of" resolution
I have the same issues as many of the posters regarding DND. I'm furious that it was simply removed without warning. Sounds as though the follks at MJ didn't want to spend the time necessary to fix a problem.
I valued MJ for its ability to be set on DND and avoid nighttime phone calls, as I run a consultancy from my home. I also will use DND if I have houseguests who might inadvertantly pick up this line.
Naturally, I'm furious at the removal of this feature. I feel that the explanation is "feeble, at best."
I say "FIX IT DAN - don't just reduce the value of your product!"

Obviously you can turn the sound volume down at night (or use the system sound control's mute).atravelfanatic wrote:I valued MJ for its ability to be set on DND and avoid nighttime phone calls, as I run a consultancy from my home.
But, if you want to hear other computer sounds, but not the ringing you can download: http://www.restuner.com/ and change the "RING" sound to an empty wave.
- Start restuner.
- File->Open and navigate to your "mjusbsp" directory.
- Open the magicjack.exe file. (Make a bkup copy first).
- Navigate to the "WAVE" folder within the .exe file.
- Right click "IDW_RING" and "save resource as".
This will save the .wav file into the restuner's project directory.
Use a program like Audacity (google for it) to select all the sound in that saved .wav file and delete it (press delete key after selecting the sound clip). Export as a new .wav.
Go back to your restuner window.
- Right click IDW_RING and "edit resource".
- In the new resource window, click the folder icon at the top of the right-hand pane.
- Navigate to the restuner project folder. Choose the file you exported from the sound editing program.
- Click "ok" at the bottom of the editing window. Answer "yes" that you want to make the changes.
- From the restuner window, File->Save as and save the file as magicjack.new.exe
Now, stop MagicJack. Replace magicjack.exe with the new one (be sure you made a copy of the original). Start Magicjack. Call yourself, and you'll get no ringing. You just see the "Incoming call" popup. And, you still have system sounds, etc.
It's not exactly DND. It won't go to voice mail immediately. But, for many people DND was broken. It would never go to voice mail. This is actually an improvement.
You could switch between the .new and.old magicjack.exe files.

I loved the DND feature, and I am going to miss it. I never had any problems with it. Always went to voicemail properly.
Not to change the subject, but between the various members of my wife's family and us (four magicjacks total), we have never had any problems using them. I am a little mystified when I read about people having a lot of problems with a magicjack.
Is it just related, perhaps, to a bad batch of magicjacks? Unusual Windows configurations? Some sort of general ignorance about computers? There actually is one relative/user who gets jammed up at upgrades, but they are quite computer illiterate and get jammed up at even the most minor computer issue.

Cost Cutting Measure
The cynic in me says that DND was taking from memory by increasing the amount of calls dumped into VM. If that is the case and a cost cutting measure and they are not being forthright or ethical, SHAME ON MJ. (This is just a cynical guess)
Demand a rebate!! See Rebate Post in Tech Support.

Re: Cost Cutting Measure
Dan has done many unethical and obtuse things. His website used to say "Hurry, 30-day trial offer ends today!" every day.keepitfair wrote:If that is the case and a cost cutting measure and they are not being forthright or ethical, SHAME ON MJ. (This is just a cynical guess)
I could go on and on. But, like everyone else.... it's a terrific bargain for $1.70 a year. If he kicked me in the groin it would still be a terrific deal. Not sure that's a winning business model to be so cheap that any rubbish is still terrific. But, that's the reality of the situation.

This is just the most hilarious idea ever! Let's do it! I can help... I used to be married to an electrician. (a psychotic electrician, but still... heh)
