magic jack with wireless router?

Post by beanveron »

I am a newbie so please excuse me if this question has been answered before. But I read that the magic jack will not work with wireless g but needs wireless n. Is this correct?

I presume you mean MJ inserted into a machine that is then connected to your home network via 802.11g or 802.11n? Your best results will be over a wire-line connection to your router. Wireless might work but is prone to external interference and dropouts. Its fine for TCP traffic which automatically retransmits. Its not so good for voice running over RTP. Its not the speed - g has plenty of bandwidth (all you need is 100Kbps). You can try it over g and see how it works - but I doubt that it will be good all the time and I doubt that n will make it much better. But a nice copper ethernet cable will make all the difference.
