Does anyone know if they have starting porting numbers yet? I would like to keep my same home number. I live in the 757 area code in VA.

LOL if you have been with the magicjack long enough you know they don't do what they say at least 6 months after they say they are going to. For example area codes! They had VERY limited area codes last July (of 07) and I was stuck with a Pittsburgh area code for a while. (I'm from philly) They said that they would release the area codes soon.. but, it took forever...
Anyway my 2 cents.. I myself want my number ported... (amanage told me that it would be available by April of 2008, but that didnt happen.

coming in 2009
If you go to the official FAQ page - it states "Coming in 2009" - a constantly moving target that continues to move further and further out.

i'm curious...
if you port your number, and use magicjack too much, will you loose your ported number when MJ cancels your account?

I was talking to the tech chat on the magicjack website and the person on there told me after january 1st, 2009 sometime for number porting and it will cost $10 to port your number.
porting and femtocell
I don't think anything will rollout untill femtocell is in place. sprint starting just now with it.

I tend to agree. Not that I had a number to port in the first place, but IMO, MJ is a temporary, disposable solution. I have more than gotten my $$$'s worth from the two I have. However, I keep my expectations low so I won't be disappointed. The more I think about porting the MORE I will NOT do it ...
If I extend my account(s) when the license renewal is due, it will be for a year. I can't see making life any more complicated than it already is. I don't use the MJ for anything other than outgoing calls or to forward my cell phone occasionally.
I, too, wonder if MJ and Dan B. will be around in five years. I'm pleased to see the rollout through some of the larger retailers. At least, I think I am. It may mean more revenue to support a more robust infrastructure; or, maybe just more demand on limited bandwidth.
In any event, it's been fun to see someone stick it the big phone companies, for a change.
selvan777, legally you are quite right. You could simply port your number to your new provider.
But, both the current phone number holding company (magicJack in this case) and the new provider have to cooperate to make it happen.
If magicJack goes belly-up, they are not going to have much incentive to authorize the porting. I'd say 6 months to a year of legal wrangling before any numbers could be ported.

Spoke to the FCC and they said it's pretty much up to the two carriers to decide whether or not they will support it, it other words they are not required to.
But I got to thinking and thought it should not be a problem anyway because MJ would be required to inform it's subscribers that they are discontinuing service which should trigger us to quickly request it be ported from them to whomever.
Do you think so?

Dan,
I have been reading your interview on Laptopmag.com. You have a very
impressive product. You mentioned a few weeks ago that you tentatively
project to have number porting on July 4th 2008 on a limited scale.
And I quote, "Larry:Porting will be available around July 4th on a
limited basis. We are not to eager to jump into porting, as some things
are beyond our control and in the control of the Bell company who is
supposed to cooperate. They often do not and make us look bad."
This is my biggest holdup using MagicJack on a regular basis. I
purchased your device a month ago and it is great. Do you know if
number porting will be an option with Qwest? I live in Utah and would
really like to drop Qwest. My area code is 801 if that helps. If
number porting becomes a possibility, I have many people I can bring
on board.
Thanks!
Dave

Don't anyone hold your breath waiting for LNP to become available from MJ. It is not in their corporate interest to allow LNP to become a reality.
Although technically there is nothing stopping MJ from getting the tools from YMAX to implement LNP, this would cost MJ a lot of money and would expose them to legal responsibilities and liabilities that they certainly have no intention of assuming or honoring ("If nominated, I will not run. If elected, I will not serve.").
In order to implement LNP, MJ would need to create a support group specifically tasked with managing LNP. These people would be charged with making sure that a number ported in remains registered in the name of the customer (yours, not MJ) and is available to be ported out should the customer desire. Given the atrocious nature of MJ customer service and management, would you trust MJ to properly protect and safeguard this "treasured possession" of yours? Do you, the subscriber, value your phone number so much that you want to keep it as you change service providers, but value it so little that you are willing to risk losing it to the incompetency (or, worse) of MJ's customer support system?
Even if MJ manages to put together a mechanism for managing phone numbers ported in by their subscribers, I see an even bigger risk on the subscribers' part. LNP rules state clearly that, in order to port a number away from a carrier, the service account with the incumbent carrier must be current and clean. Given the stories we have heard so far in the life of MJ's service offering, wherein new customers were delayed past 30 days so as not to be able to claim a return, or who have purchased 5 year warranties only to find that there is nobody who knows how to honor them, do you really expect MJ to cooperate in porting your number out to your next carrier? Or, could you reasonably expect them to find a reason to prevent you from porting the number out? I could easily envision them delaying the paperwork until after the MJ service expires, or falsely claiming that you were in violation of a part of the ToS, just to avoid going to the trouble of porting the number out.
If MJ retains your number instead of letting you take it, they benefit on two fronts. First, they do not have to file the paperwork with the NANP administrators that points your number to your new carrier (Responsible Organization). Second, they have one less number to get from YMAX (and pay for) to support a new customer.
MJ has no incentive to implement outbound portability for the very same reasons. One of the reasons we pay so little to MJ is because they do everything in bulk and offer virtually no individualized service. MJ gets telephone numbers in bulk from YMAX and keeps the entire blocks in their own name, saving them the expense of managing individualization. MJ does not send out a customer name with the outbound Caller ID because that would increase costs. In order to port out an MJ-assigned phone number, they would need to convert the entire database to have the capability of having individual names; something I don't see them embracing.
All in all, MJ has no incentive to support LNP. Why should they? And, why should you trust them take custody of your phone number? Would you trust your grandmother's jewelry to be safe in a safe deposit box at the "First National Bank of magicJack"?

I agree that it would take more effort than marketing. MarkThe right of consumers to keep the same, familiar phone number when switching to a new telephone company was expanded today by the Federal Communications Commission, in an Order that will further ensure consumers’ opportunity to choose a telephone service provider based on quality, price and service.
The FCC made clear that the obligation to provide local number portability extends to interconnected Voice over Internet Protocol providers and the telecommunications carriers that obtain numbers for them. This action was, in part, a response to numerous complaints by consumers about their inability to port numbers to or from interconnected VoIP providers. The FCC also initiated a Notice of Proposed Rulemaking seeking comment on additional VoIP numbering issues.

See the MagicJack Wiki (FAQ, How-To, history and more).
They don't have much choice about telling the truth in their advertising, either, but that doesn't stop them from lying.
My guess is that MJ will either go out of business because it collapses under the weight of its pyramid scheme drying up (if that turns out to be the case) or MJ as a company will be sold to another party. In either case, Dan and company will have never managed to complete the preparation for supporting LNP.
This is another reason that MJ is a separate company from YMAX. YMAX, as the registered CLEC, already has all of the bits in place. However, it's up to MJ to get its act in order to provide LNP to the customer base. I'm not holding my breath.

I'll try porting when it becomes available in 2010 or is it 2011 or 2012...
In another post someone asked about porting away a magicJack number LOL! http://www.phoneservicesupport.com/port ... t4757.html

Yes, the key phrase in the FCC announcement is "interconnected Voice over Internet Protocol providers", and MJ has specifically positioned themselves so as not to fit this categorization.az2008 wrote:[F]rom what I've read, it sounds like they (MJ -- ed.) don't have much choice:

The bottom line remains. Don't hold your breath waiting for inbound LNP to become a reality, and don't wager your precious phone number that you will be able to port it out later if you manage to port it in.magicJack_ToS wrote:The goods and services offered by magicJack provide a multimedia experience which includes a voice over Internet information service feature. Re: number porting date
Has anyone come across a inexpensive company that will take over an existing phone number and then forward all the calls to the MJ number? This seems like the only real alternative ATM to keeping an existing number. The cheapest providers I could find on the Internet seem to charge about 100 dollars per year to provide this kind of service.
Re: number porting date
I've been using parkmyphone.com to hold my number while waiting for LNP. MJ effectively costs me $5 a month now, plus the bother, but still cheaper than Qwest.Jasric wrote:Has anyone come across a inexpensive company that will take over an existing phone number and then forward all the calls to the MJ number? Onesuite. Free port, $3 a month including incoming. No need to forward, just use Magicjack for outgoing and your ported number on Onesuite for incoming. Plus unlimited voicemail.
Parkmynumber is $15 port fee plus $3, for no calls, no voicemail, just to hold your number and give callers a message - doesnt seem like a good deal at all. Not sure whats included for the $5 option but still think Onesuite is a better deal - providing they can successfully port your number of course.
PM me for more info.

Number porting is scheduled by June 21st. See
http://blog.laptopmag.com/magicjack-sco ... -2009-2010
Article posted April 21st, 2009 says "Number-porting: One of magicJack’s most requested features, the ability to transfer existing numbers to magicJack, should arrive “within the next 60 days.” This will be available to both current and new magicJacks."
So, that's how I come up with June 21st. Based on past promises by magicJack, I doubt there will be porting this year.

google voice is another option
I've been slowly changing all of my contact information with family and vendors to use my google voice (used to be grandcentral) number for incoming and use mj for outgoing.
You register any and all of your phone numbers with google voice and when someone dials your google voice number all of your registered phones will ring till you pick one of them up or it goes to voice mail. Pretty cool.
I still want to port my main number just in case someone fell through the cracks and didn't get an update from me...

I am about the get over my need for my current phone number and just live the with the assign MJ number.

porting use callcentric
I personally use Skypein since I did all this when I moved and needed a new number. Former Local Telco wont LNP.
But my cell and my parent use Callcentric. Two plans.
1. 1.95 /mo 1.5c min and forward your calls
2. 5.95 /mo unlimited and forward your calls
You pay $25 to port your number. Seems to be a reasonable solution if I can only mod my MJ callerid on a mac.

Re: porting use callcentric
Oh yeah setup as outside the US for callcentric if you don't want to pay e911 kindof pointless for a forwarding service.someitguy79 wrote:I personally use Skypein since I did all this when I moved and needed a new number. Former Local Telco wont LNP.

Porting is a joke
I have been waiting for MagicJack to be able to port numbers for 18 months. Every time I chat with tech support I get the same answer which is "you will be able to port your number soon". MagicJack has a loose interpretation of the word soon.

Number Porting Substitute
I finally gave up on MJ for porting and went with VoipVoip.com. Free porting of my telephone number and I can forward to Googlevoice which will forward to my MJ # among others. I will save over $80 a month doing it this way.

Number Porting...my patience is running thin
MagicJack has been promising porting for a couple years now. We keep hearing that "it's coming soon". I want to keep my home number, so I need it to be ported before I cancel my existing phone service. Ooma just received something like $14 million in new funding, making the purchase of their device, which allows porting, much safer than before. They should be around for at least another 2 years.
Someone mentioned VoipVoip.com and uses GoogleVoice. Since GoogleVoice is still in beta, and only available to previous GrandCentral users, this is not an option for me.
I wish the folks at MagicJack would get it together on the Porting issue.
Thanks for reading my rant....javascript:emoticon('')

As I said in an earlier post - I was tired of waiting for MJ to allow porting. I was paying almost $100 a month to ATT. I ported my # over to VOiPVOiP.com for free. Now I pay less than $8 a month for #s forwarded to my GV #. The calls are consistently high quality. At first I ported to Voipvoip.com just to have a place to park my bs number until MJ allowed porting. I may just stay with them after MJ porting is possible to keep my options open as I learn more about VOiP capabilities.
By the way, it seems that GV is now opening up their service to those on their waiting list.
