Rumors of magicJack's Death Are Greatly Exaggerated...

Good afternoon.

It makes me a bit sad; I have really liked MagicJack, but this basically renders it unnecessary. Not having to keep the computer on for calls and the extra features of Google Voice are nice, too.
Yeah but this is experimental feature and we dont know how long it will last on gizmo project or what google will do as this will result in more calls from their lines
Agreed.

I wouldn't go locking up those magicJacks and D-Link DPH-50U's in the family junk drawer just yet. Gizmo5's Google Voice gateway is an evolving story and we don't know quite how it's going to play out just yet.

Did anyone else notice when setting up the outbound Google Voice dialing from within the Gizmo5 account management web interface a warning is issued that all Gizmo5 outbound calls through Google Voice are capped at 20 minutes. That's hardly worth getting excited about.

The Gizmo5 <—> Google Voice setup was fun to mess around with for a few minutes, but I'll wait to see how this plays out before I decide whether or not to renew my Skype service, which has five months remaining, for another year.
Thank you.

Lisa :)

Having G5 setup for GV, is I think and extra bonus so we can use any ATA to make calls on an easy way. As far as G5 goes I have to agree with you I don't trust them, and I said Extra because just having only a GV account will allow you to make unlimited long distances in the USA. I can use my cell phone with a $30.00 unlimited locals and call anywhere one touch only. and there is a question for you, can you do that with MJ?'

Now we all know we can trust Google, and they offer you unlimited calls using your computer, so does MJ, remember it is against MJ TOS to use an ATA, we all do take a chance. There is people making Proxys that you can run on your router to make the click to call from GV without your computer running, as far as Google I don't think they will worry about you breaking any TOS by using an ATA because they all ready offer the service from your computer.
They did stop SIP dialing from G5 but not because of the calls it was because the have a security issue with the spoofing so other people can go into your account and make call if they spoof your number.

I think Google is here to stay for ever like your Gmail, and if G5 let us down again they will get another VOIP provider or even better they will buy G5.

As you say GV is growing, but this litter kid is much bigger than any other so call VOIP providers'

And for that reason I wont hesitate to dump MJ.

I don't believe it's a matter of trust. From my perspective, it's more a function of an unfinished book. Google Voice (GV) is certainly in development, but the worst thing likely to happen there is the onset of annoying advertisements somewhere (and hopefully with a buy-out option for folks who would rather not have the advertisements.)

With Gizmo5 (G5), the situation is quite a bit different. Not only is the product experimental (according to G5's own words), but they state that outbound calls routed through GV are capped at 20 minutes. That's hardly useful (well, at least to me anyway.)
GVTricks wrote:I can use my cell phone with a $30.00 unlimited locals and call anywhere one touch only. and there is a question for you, can you do that with MJ?'
That's a good question. Since we don't really know what magicJack considers fair use, I would have to say that the answer to your question is unknown. Skype states (in writing) that fair use is 10,000 minutes/month. My T-Mobile plan has 1,000 minutes/month and I'm pretty sure T-Mobile doesn't care how I use them. T-Mobile is offering me unlimited minutes/month for USD49.99/month. But, one good question is how does T-Mobile define unlimited (since we now know that companies have apparently acquired the right to change the meanings of words in the English language from their typically-defined meanings.)
GVTricks wrote:Now we all know we can trust Google,
Whoa... I never said that I trust Google and I certainly don't. Google leaves a lot to be desired when it comes to respecting privacy. Google has made an effective science of collecting and correlating data on people. The jury on Google and privacy is still out and isn't likely to be in until someone, somewhere tries to obtain access to Google's datastore for some law enforcement purpose.
GVTricks wrote:and they offer you unlimited calls using your computer,
Well, no. Some eagle eye astutely discovered that Google Voice calls are capped at three hours. So, Google's definition of unlimited calls is some number of calls times three hours/call.
GVTricks wrote:so does MJ,
Wrong again. As stated previously, no one knows what magicJack considers unlimited.
GVTricks wrote:remember it is against MJ TOS to use an ATA, we all do take a chance.
Correction, people who use ATA's with magicJack take a chance. I don't own an ATA and I no longer use magicJack, so it's kind of moot from my perspective.
GVTricks wrote:There is people making Proxys that you can run on your router to make the click to call from GV without your computer running
Oh? Really? Google Voice offers a SIP host? Do tell...
GVTricks wrote:as far as Google I don't think they will worry about you breaking any TOS by using an ATA because they all ready offer the service from your computer.
See previous comment...
GVTricks wrote:They did stop SIP dialing from G5 but not because of the calls it was because the have a security issue with the spoofing so other people can go into your account and make call if they spoof your number.
Um, no. I am able to SIP dial through G5 and I spent about an hour today calling SIP's all over the world. It's fun, but it gets old fast.
GVTricks wrote:I think Google is here to stay for ever like your Gmail, and if G5 let us down again they will get another VOIP provider or even better they will buy G5.
You probably meant to say ...Google Voice is here to stay... and I certainly wouldn't disagree with that at all. As for how G5's interconnectivity with GV will play out, only time will tell...
GVTricks wrote:As you say GV is growing, but this litter kid is much bigger than any other so call VOIP providers'
Maybe, it's me. But, I don't see GV as a VoIP provider. GV is a follow-me service albeit on steroids. As I said in another post, I worked for a company many years ago that paid for this type of service. GV, of course, offers so much more. But, I wouldn't call it VoIP. It's more of a contact management center allowing users to give out one number (and use web-site widgets, which are just too damn neat!) and control how that one number reaches the user.
GVTricks wrote:And for that reason I wont hesitate to dump MJ.
LOL You're most certainly entitled. But, I don't see how the GV <—> G5 combination provides the same level of telephony service one has through magicJack presently when G5 is capping outbound calls through GV at 20 minutes. But, heck, to each his or her own...
Thank you.

That's a real bummer that Gizmo5 > GV has a 20 minute call cap.

Also the inability to check your voicemail from your Gizmo5 phone.

Do G5<->GV users still have the option of paying G5 1.9¢/outbound-minute while still retaining the ability to use GV for free inbound calls, and the ability to use an ATA for both? I wouldn't mind paying for outbound minutes to untether my phone from my computer.

I don't see why not. Setting up the inbound and outbound linkage between Google Voice (GV) and Gizmo5 (G5) are separate functions. So, it makes sense that one could forward their inbound GV calls to G5 (using that Gizmo option in GV) and then leave outbound GV calling set to OFF in the G5 settings.
mel2000 wrote:I wouldn't mind paying for outbound minutes to untether my phone from my computer.
Whether or not paying USD0.019/minute makes this arrangement a better value than the fixed cost of a magicJack or Skype setup would seem to be up to the beholder. I wouldn't like the arrangement. But, I use a thin client, which probably doesn't draw significantly more power than an ATA.

If outbound call volume is low, then the consumption-based billing probably wouldn't be too worrisome. 100 outbound minutes/month would run USD1.90. 1,000 outbound minutes/month would run USD19.00. So, if one uses upwards of 1,000/minutes/month, then the consumption-based model doesn't look so attractive.
Thank you.

When I setup G5 this morning the 20 min warning was not there. Neither was this "Google Voice - Experimental Service" heading. It simply said "Google Voice"

Thanks for your reply lcompton. I don't make a lot of outbound calls and generally keep my conversations under 20 minutes. But there are two people I call and talk to for about an hour or more per month. I'd hate to be interrupted by the 20 minute limit while gabbing with them, so I'd rather pay for my outbound calls.

The notices are still present. As illustrated in Figure 1, the experimental indicator is always present.

Figure 2 illustrates that the 20-minute call cap advisory only appears after configuring outbound calling through Gizmo5.

I got it working but only through mysipswitch.

Strange, sip credentials for both Gizmo and Sipgate on my ATA will produce a short ring and then it will go to GV voicemail. Using the mysipswitch ruby Dial plan though works. Sipsorcery incoming never works fro me so I hope they don't take mysipswitch down.

Guess I'll be able to shut the PC off at night now. We'll see how long this will last. Experimental to me means "very short term."

Map DID number to Gizmo

Post by dtm »

I have been playing with the Gizmo/Google Voice connection on my PAP2-NA ATA. It works great. I do have a note for those of you that already have a mappable DID number. You can map your existing DID to Gizmo in lieu of paying for their inbound number (which is cheap). The mapping is done as:

[email protected]

Where gizmoUsername is your actual user name at G5 and not the 1747 number.
---------------------------------
Folks, this is potentially a MagicJack killer especially if MJ continues to make life hell for ATA users. The sound quality is great and it works seemlessly with Google Voice. Unless MJ changes their tune between now and when my year expires they won't get any more $$$ out of me.

Oh and I forgot to add that you can turn G5 voicemail OFF. This allows calls to go to Google Voicemail. Are you listening MJ?

I am out of the Country today In Quito Ecuador, testing Google Voice from a Hotel WiFi.

Unlike MJ in the past I have been able to call all my family and friends with an excellent sound quality in and out.

I was using Gizmo5 soft phone but the sound quality was not what I have expected, and then I register my Xlite soft phone with the Gizmo5 account and there was a crystal clear conversation.

I the best thing was all FREE calls.

Thank you Google Voice

Yeap, GV is awesome use my own ATA dont have to keep a pc on. More features call quality is awesome..

Until MJ comes out with a real ATA answer then even at the low price of 20 bucks its not worth my time.

The 3 minute limit only applies to outbound calls, not the free inbound. I think paying G5 1.9c/minute for outbound calls is better than putting up with a 3 minute limit, and better than being forced to MJ's limitations.

Oops. I didn't see that coming. It smells like the old bait-n-switch. Offer them GV calling, get them to sign up and purchase the inbound number, then zap the GV calling to 3 minutes so they will purchase your outbound service.

I really really hope Gizmo is not that stupid. Crap like that will zap your image on the web faster than lightning. Gizmo5 please tell me this is an error and you meant to change it to 30 minutes and not 3! Don't blow your opportunity to capture the goodwill and business of millions of Google Voice users.

I've been using the Gizmo/GV (formerly Grand Central) combination for 2 years now, with no major problems, BUT only as an incoming line.

The other line on the ATA was outgoing calls via MJ configuration until the purge of 6/09/09. Recently restored with the semi-functional ATA method described elsewhere in this forum.

So at least with an incoming line always on, I can shut the computer off now and then, and still be contacted. Of course, if there should be an emergency on my end, Google Voice isn't going to do shit for me there.

ITs say 3 minutes on my account also but i did make call this evening about 6:00PM Est and talk for 8 minutes without any issue until i hangup.

So i think they just forget to put Zero after 3

its even say on faq are they give 30 minutes limit for GV.

Hi folks:

I have been using Gizm05 + Grandcentral ( now GV) + PAP2 over a period of time with free incoming calls ( to my regular phone) ; free outbound calls made from my GV contact list on computer; outbound calls from my regular phone at a cost of 1.95 cents / minute.

Reading some of the posts on this thread, I have also recently signed up in my gizmo5 screen and Google Voice is on
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Google Voice - Experimental Service Learn more at: www.gizmovoice.com
Google Voice Calling is ON(Duration is limited to 3 minutes per call, service subject to change)
----------------------------------------------
From what I gathered from the posts in this thread, outbound calls made from the regular phone are free for a limited time ( say 3 mins - 30 mins) instead of paying 1.95 cents / mins normally.

I made a few test calls from my regular phone. I see I am being charged 1.95 cents / min as seen from the call history in Gizmo5 and also my credit account being depleted by the same amount.

Am I missing something? Why am I being charged for my test outbound calls from my regular phone connected to my ATA?

I need help please. Thanks in anticipation.

Just logged in to my Gizmo5 account and the GV "experimental" designation and the minutes restriction are gone.

EDIT: The free 3 minute restriction is now furtively disclosed on the www.gizmovoice.com page. I don't think it's a typo.

GizmoVoice was working fine, until they just made this change and removed the "Experimental" designation.

Now all of my outgoing calls get the recording that you must purchase callout credit to make a call.

Also, I am not comfortable with the fact that Gizmo5 has the password to my Google accounts, so I turned off the GizmoVoice feature, and changed the password in my Google account.

I will settle for free incoming calls via GV > Gizmo5, and will continue to use MJ via my ATA with the MJMD5 proxy for incoming via GV > MJ, and outgoing via ATA.

Good evening.

Don't take it too badly. After all, the Gizmo5 folks did say the service was experimental and subject to change.

Figure 1 reflects the latest version of the interface:

Image
Figure 1: The Latest Version of the Gizmo5 <—> Google Voice Interface Options on the Gizmo5 Account Settings Page

I suspect the Google Voice <—> Gizmo5 interface may have a useful application on inbound call traffic. I'm also intrigued with the fact that Gizmo5 provides me with a means of attaching to the SIP universe freely and ethically; i.e. without violating any terms-of-service agreements that I've entered with anyone.

There are some positively fascinating addresses in the SIP universe that I can't wait to explore.

NOTE: The e-mail address reflected in the sample image is not mine. Please do not send hate e-mail to it.
Thank you.

I don't much care for the bait-n-switch tactics. When it is said and done all you have accomplished from a user's position is getting your Google Voice number placed on the caller id of the calls you place. You are still paying Gizmo's rates for the calls. I can do the same thing with other VOIP companies at a better price.

I am surprised Google is allowing this to occur. I guess there is some business arrangement between G5 and GV. What that is exactly seems to be an open question.

I regret posting the positive comments on G5 earlier.

Had the same problem, Google WILL not stand for this. Watch they will pull there support, if they bait and switch, and it is not corrected. They have a reputation, not to be destroyed by a Fly by Night company like G5.

I'm a bit disappointed too with the move to charge. I will retain one GV/Gizmo5 combination which is for fax on one of my ATA's 2nd lines. No fax I send should be over 3 minutes so its perfect for that use. I tested a 5 page fax and it sent through on the 1st try.

For my home service, I am currently using SIPGate One which charges 1.9c outbound, gives free inbound, free phone number (not local for me) and I have the ability to change my outgoing caller ID to anything I want. I have GV set to forward to that non-local number which gives me a great solution.

What really got me with them is that I can run multiple SIP softphones or ATAs under the same account without an additional charge. This is nice because I can run x-lite on any PC I am using and have it popup when a call is coming in which gives me free caller notification and I can choose to ignore it as well. I disabled voicemail with them so that GV handles all my voicemail needs.

Newly discovered issues with both security and Gizmo5's business model as pertains to making calls through Google Voice have given us pause in recommending the solution described below. In a nutshell, the solution below requires that you provide your Google email credentials to Gizmo5 in order to make the connection to Google Voice for free unlimited 20-minute 3-minute calling. Late yesterday, Gizmo5 announced a new 2¢ per minute fee for Google Voice calling (now described as Gizmo Voice). Yuck!

Even if you don't mind a stranger having unfettered access to your Gmail account, your Google credentials also may be used for other Google services including Google Checkout. Without a clearly defined business relationship between Google and Gizmo5, this would be a huge security risk. Having read several articles which hinted at a business relationship between Google and Gizmo5, we put our security concerns aside. However, when Gizmo5 began changing the ground rules for these calls (almost daily), it raised red flags that Google might not, in fact, be either a business partner or even a willing participant in Gizmo5's creation. As events continued to unfold, we have discovered that Gizmo5 may, in fact, be using a connection process that is not unlike the one we had planned to introduce this week anyway. And we have no business relationship with Google.

Bottom Line: Whether you are using an Asterisk server or not, WAIT! Barring any changes at the Google Voice end to address the Gizmo5 connectivity solution outlined below, we will have an equivalent, secure solution for everyone to use by this coming Monday, August 3. In the meantime, disable your Gizmo5-Google Voice setup if you already have put it in place and change your Gmail password!

What's the difference between Google Voice Calling and Gizmo5 Call Out? Google Voice Calling briefly used to be free while Gizmo5 Call Out was always 1.9¢/minute. Now they're both 1.9¢/minute?

I have Google Voice Calling set on my G5 account. When I made a short outbound call yesterday my G5 outbound balance was debited even though the call was less than 3 minutes.

yes I see mine also being charged eventhough the calls are less than a minute. It was free yesterday. I do not want to fool around with this any more for thiese so called 3 mins free calls any more. Not at all attractive. There are other options. For example VOXOX has 1 cent for outbound calls and free coming calls with PAP2 . While you get your own free telephone # (not necessarily of your choice of area code ) You can tie this with GV which can verify this number , You can specify your own cid such as GV #. The call quality is pretty good. Great for faxes. as I am told. Another option is Localphone which has a Outbound call rate of 0.9 cent/min rate. ( used to be 0.7 cents/min which they increased 2 days ago) You get a free local number as International calling card # , Account # and a Pin #. When all these digits are dialed, you can call any number from any phone. You can nicely automate all these key strokes on a cordless phone. One disadvantage is you cannot tie this number with GV. . I find this is the best for International calls especially to India ( 2.5 cents/min) compared to all other VOIP providers such as MJ ( 5 cents/min), , VOXOX ( 4.3 cents), GV-gizmo ( 7 cents).

Just my 2 cents worth.

It was more like a two weeks ago.
In my understanding, Localphone only provides U.K. numbers.

Localphone.

Post by anant »

Localphone at the time of sign up provides International calling card # which is a local #. Account # and a pin# and also a UK tellephone #. I do not see any need for using the UK # except for feeding into ATA as one of the parameters like userid.
If you have a bunch of phones where you often make calls from, you can register them under My Numbers . The contact #s you frequently call, you can save them under contacts. This generates a local # for each contact and you dial that number to call the contact. If you want to contact a new # which you have not set up in contact list as above you have to use the International Calling card #, account # and pin # and dial the contact telephone #. All these digits can be automated in a cordless phone to make dialing painless. I do not see the use of Localphone as complicated.

Web site gives guidance for popular ATA setup.

outbound calls from GV

Hi:

It sounds interesting. I do not understand how you make outbound calls from GV without Gizmo? What would you replace Gizmo with ? What sip parameters do you feed into PAP2 to dial from a regular phone connected to PAP2? Could you kindly detail the steps. Thanks in anticipation.
