You should go one step farther, and stick it to Magic Jack.
I was thrilled when I first bought Magic Jack, but WOW, its been 3 months now, and the quality keeps getting worse and worse. First the beeping started, and then the call quality began to degrade. Now even if I reboot my computer and update the software for the dongle, it only takes 2 or 3 mins into a conversation before the other party says I'm breaking up.
Anyway, now I've purchased the Ooma phone system for $200 at Costco (special promotion through Aug 31st). It gives me all the same features I had with Vonage, but with $0 telephone bills for life.
I know people will balk at the price; I know I did, but its price keeps dropping. I realize that $200 buys 10 yrs of Magic Jack service, but that is also 10yrs of head aches and frustration, and explaining to everyone you talk to every time you make a call that its Magic Jacks crummy service. So I decided to buy Ooma, and so far it is as good a Vonage.
Don't wait as long as I did to stick it Magic Jack... 3 months is too long!
Cheers!

Another happy Ooma user here too after trying MJ. For the first couple weeks with MJ I thought it might actually work, but then it started getting worse. Voice quality was bad, it was breaking up all the time. Since I was trying to replace a full time land line, I wanted something that actually worked.
I bought Ooma and and very happy. The calling quality is as good or better than a land line and it will pay for itself in 7 months for even a basic land line, plus I have a lot of extra features I didn't have on my land line such as free long distance calling and caller ID. With those figured in, it will pay for itself in 5 months.
And now no monthly bill from AT&T.
Veddy nice!

This sounds like an Ooma ad.It will pay for itself in seven months.
FL charges a lot of taxes on telecom services but even then, a basic line is 24.50/month. How much is seven times 24.50 ? Ooma is 250.- and even if you take the limited time Costco sale it is still( with 6% sales' tax) 212.-. Plus there is the interest loss on up front payment. And you can make outbound calls with Google voice, if you want to save on domestic LD.
Not with a VOIP service, unless you have a very bad land line. The calling quality is as good or better than a land line
I heard way too many complaints about Ooma. Magic Jack is excellent for us cheapos. If it does not work out on day I will get an ATA for around $ 50.- and get one of the many upcoming low cost VOIP providers who do not charge me hundreds of bucks up front for a service with an unclear future.
yes, Ooma has their own forum and it's not without complaints and issues.
For those not happy with MJ, why not buy an ATA and purchase minutes with a company offering no contracts or monthly payments and calls are around .02 per minute. You can use a regular phone too. I have Gizmo5, and there are others out there, and i use MJ. When my computer is off I can make calls with no problem. If you have GV you can hook up both, use your computer to call out and answer with the phone for free calling in the US.

While I have 3 MJs, I couldn't wait for number porting. I went with voipvoip.com and bought an ATA, ported my company number to them. 3 months later I have more than paid for the ATA and am paying less than $10 a month including less than .02 cents a minute for outgoing calls. Don't have to have my computer on either for the ATA.
MJ has their problems, but my service is fairly stable and adequate for my needs. I just needed to get my ATT company number switched away from them.

Maggie60 sorry you are having problems, you are at the right place to fix it.
My start with MJ was real ruff it didn't work on my Dell laptop (All calls went garbled)
Built up a small old HP computer just to run MJ and everything works great, after a few months found a USB power saver setting that fixed the laptop as well.

I clean my discs, defragg and run my anti virus once a week, what more could I do. I have a Vista and it works fine except with the Magic Jack.
I talked to them online again today and I am sending it back and they are sending me a new one. If anyone can think of ways to better way for me to clean my computer (yes, we take it out and open the side and use canned air on it) please let me know. I do not mind suggestions.
Thanks

Chris-
My first and second one would not work, spent days and days. Now have bought a different system, that I should get by next week and I hope it will work better, if not I am sending that back too, no second try. Then I will buy OOMA. I bought Net Talk for $99, they have a special for this weekend only. I would keep your land line till you find something that really works for you.
Good Luck

Matt is right, you do need broadband for MJ. I have it, but it was still a lemon, I just think they need to redo MJ. The biggest problem I had was garbled speech, it kept breaking up all the time on both of the ones I had. That is why I bought Nettalk, I am hoping it will work better.
Good Luck to You
