MJ will not respond to phone dialing, and weak audio, echo

Post by captcurt »

Have now spent many hours trying to get this new MJ to work properly. Several hours with several different on-line chat support people from MJ as well. Nothing has made the problem even a little better.

Problems:

Can not dial a number from a telephone connected to the MJ.
dialing from the softphone works fine.

When a call is made, either incoming or outgoing, the audio volume is very weak on both ends. This is not an issue when using headset.

The opposite end of call (non-MJ end) can hear their own voice delayed back into their phone. Also a multi-tap-style echo is heard at the far end. This is not heard at the MJ end of the call.

Now, here's the puzzling part: the audio quality and volume is fine when I use the headset mode. Even the echo is not there.

The phones ring on inbound calls as they should.

I have tried several different phones and cables..both cordless and corded phones. Three different XP pro computers. Main PCs are 3GHz P4 with 2 GB mem, etc and are well optimized for minimum running processes.

I tried with and without a powered hub, and in every case, MJ was the only USB device on the bus.

With and without going thru my Linksys router--no difference.

Tech support took me through all of the standard driver reloads and re-installs, even had me download and install Div/X !!??

Have run MJrecover and the various drivers available on this site but nothing has changed the problem.

I really suspect that the dongle has a problem since the software all seems to work when running the headset.

I tried it at another physical location also--different computer and DSL connect--same issue.

The tech "guru's" online wanted me to run a DSL speed test and report the results....I asked him if it was a network speed issue, how come it works fine with the headset?...he said "ok"

I have seen this no dial problem several times described here but no definitive solutions.

I tried to get customer support to send me a replacement unit to try but they wanted another $40 plus I had to pay shipping on the return. On principle, I said no.

So before I return the original, (a week old) and place another order to try, anyone have a way to really verify that the unit is bad or another suggestion to solve this?

I would like to get one working and load it to a thin client and use it as a primary phone but it wont work.

Thanks

Curt

Just thought of one more item: the MJ dongle gets warm to the touch...is this normal?

I am having the same exact problem. I have tried everything ( new phones, corded phones, adjusting volume, tech support). The echo just started recently. The strange thing is, it worked fine last month.

After reading alot of these posts, it seems as though the automatic s/w updates are a source of some problems.

I wish I could find someone close by that had a working MJ so I could just swap mine into their system and try it. That would pretty much confirm the dongle problem that I suspect.

Otherwise, I'm going to return the unit--its only a week old--and enter an order for another one. Thats about it unless I hear something else to try.

I did take it to another home--different PC and DSL access, although I tried it with one of the 4 different phones I already tried. Same result.

I have the same problem. I'm also convince that the last S/W update broke it. Since not everyone is having the same problem. I too suspected that there is something with the hardware in addition to the software problem. My latest theory is the power problem with the USB port. If you have a powered USB Hub. You may want to give it a try. I don't have one at the moment. Will look for one.

See this post for reference ... supports my theory.

WEll..I have tried it with a powered hub. In my case, it made absolutely no difference.

Here is one more item..

I just set up and configured an XPe t5700 Thin Client 1GHz 512/256 and the SAME EXACT issue is present with it.

The Magic jack is going back to its makers on monday.

Will order another as soon as my refund is processed and see if I can make that one work.

It shouldn't be this difficult to isolate a problem with a device or its software. for a gizmo that only cost a dollar to make, it would seem good business to try to get working units into customers hands. The postage for delivery is probably more than the cost of the unit--
