I'm considering buying MajicJack but I have a question: The ISP in this household is Comcast and they also handle telephone service. I wan't a seperate line/phone number. My computer is on a router from the computer upstairs. I would like to use MajicJack on my computer. Will there be a conflict with the Comcast software/connection? Thanks!

incoming sound
If you're using Comcast--PLEASE HELP. Can't get any incoming sound on my daughter's computer that uses Comcast Cable internet. Do you have any suggestions?
Re: incoming sound
I can't think of any reason for it. I'm now in my second Comcast household (not by choice, believe me), and have been using an MJ as my primary phone service for nearly a year without any problems.uisillini wrote:If you're using Comcast--PLEASE HELP. Motorola 900 cable modem
I spent 3 hrs online with MagicJack support and at the end of all that time the 6th person helping me I think might have had a good suggestion. We think the Motorola SBG 900 Cable Modem might be interfering with the outgoing/incoming sound. I spent all that time in my daughter's apartment trying to get the thing fixed (no, MJ is NOT plug in and use) and finally had to give up because she had studying to do and I had to get home.
So I guess I'll have to make ANOTHER trip and spend another 2 hrs. fixing the d*** thing. This makes me VERY unhappy, and the stupid thing still doesn't work. Bought it so she'd have unlimited calling and 911 service, but so far NOTHING.
So if anyone has SPECIFIC instructions how to fix the issues with the MJ and the Motorola SBG 900 Cable Modem PLEASE let me know.

don't buy the magicjack with comcast internet
Swamp.....don't buy it. Here's why---TOO MANY PROBLEMs with whatever modem you have. Unless you're pretty good at computer technical stuff (and I thought I was until this stupid magicjack thing) you just might have issues with comcast.
I'm considering returning it in the magicjack buyback program. It was supposed to be EASY TO USE. I have spent days trying to get the thing to work and it still is just a piece of junk plugged into a usb connection. Reportedly the issue is the Motorola 900SBG modem that has way to many conflicts and NO ONE seems to be able to give a simple straightforward set of instructions.
If anyone out there can fix this thing let me know.

I'm running magic jack on a Motorola SB6120 Cable Modem and it's working fine, the only thing i can think of that would give you problems is either a router or a firewall that may or may not be blocking the incoming/outgoing connections from the magic jack dongle to the internet. I would suggest typing 192.168.100.1 as a url in internet explorer or firefox which ever your daughter uses and see if that specific modem has any thing that might be preventing magic jack from making or receiving calls.

I have Comcast Internet access and have used an MJ since last February with no hassles. It took me all of 4-5 minutes to rip open the package, plug it in, get a telephone number and make my first call. Just because you have a problem doesn't mean others will have it too. Making blanket statements are rarely useful to anyone.

not useful
I don't think my expression of frustration was a "blanket statement." It was exactly what it appeared to be -- frustration. My dad who's in his late 70's also was able to plug & play the MJ, but not me. If you do a google search you'll find lots of other folks who also have had nagging problems also. When it does work it's a genius device. But when it doesn't it's just an expensive paper weight. In just about every other situation I'm pretty computer savvy and usually can fix/diagnose every con-fuser issue. That's why this little device has been so annoying. Add to that the fact that so many other people use it without any problems--well, it's been ugly.
Yes, at this point I am going to assume it is the Motorola SBG 900 router. The problem is that you have to go through 6-8 of the MJ tech folks to finally get one who suggests that roadblock. In all I've spent maybe 20 hours just trying to get the thing to this point. It was almost 8 hours just to get it registered--and I had to take it home and get it registered on my AT&T DSL. I was told by MJ folks once I did that that bringing it back to the Comcast setup and using it there would be easy. Not so. Well after another 6 hrs. we've come to the cable modem issue, and after another half hour resetting things in the modem it still doesn't work.
I'm going to try one more time to get it up and running. Unfortunately that involves another trip/inconvenience. My daughter just doesn't have the time (she's a law student) to deal with this and she's mighty ticked off that it's been such a pain.

MAYBE a solution
Just did another google search and came up with this website:
http://portforward.com/english/routers/ ... icjack.htm
There is also a link to a "PORT CHECK" site that might be of further assistance. I'll give it a try later this week and see if it works.
Also--found this on this support site: http://www.phoneservicesupport.com/no-audio-t3080.html
Hopefully this is an end to this dilemna.

A solution (finally)
Did another trip to my daughter's to try to get the MJ working, and this time was successful. Here's the short version. Followed the instructions (see posting above this) for Motorola 900SBG to open ports, etc. Still nothing, but I was determined to overcome this problem. I got on the phone (thank goodness for cell phones) and called Motorola support and spoke to a very helpful person who guided me through how to make sure ports were open, and then suggested "why not just turn off the firewall." OH MY, horror and anxiety hit but he said Motorola says turn it off and use your computer's firewall and as long as MJ has permission through that you're ok. My concern is that because the 900 SBG is wireless it would allow anyone to use the wireless capabilities--NO, they still need your password.
So tried more port opening, enabling, etc. That didn't work--no matter what or how many ports I opened/enabled, etc. I gave up and turned off the modem firewall. The result: Magicjack works perfectly.
What a pain, but finally the thing works.
