MJ and Bandwidth Issues

i bought an Magicjack when i was in the US so i can talk to my GF, myself? i live in the netherlands, MJ itself works like a charm, no problems whatshowever except for 1 mayor annoying thing

when magicjack is in use (i am calling with someone) my internet gets REALLY sluggish, opening a webpage takes AGES, not to mention anything else (online games get lag etc) if i was the only person using my internet i wouldnt care much, but i have to share my internet with 3 other people and they are all annoyed when this happens and i am annoyed that i have to wait till 4AM sometimes (like tonight) to be able to call my GF.

does anyone have a fix?

mj has a specific band with usage, i think its 80kbps something. I had a similar problem when I first use mj. i went to there chat support and they had me add some port is firewall and sites is the internet options, I think

. you may want to check about with the chat support. but you have to prepare for troubleshooting of course

they made me add to ports to my firewall, but one of them i could not add (maybe the router was using that by default)
5070 and another port which my router didnt wanna add.

have reasons to believe my router (a fritz!box) is the cause, it has QoS which i cannot turn off it seems, anyone have any ideas?

There isn't really an exact fix for this problem as it seems you're trying to use the same computer you have magic jack on. If you search the forums you'll notice that in most cases it's better to have magic jack running on its own seperate computer or on a thinclient or a laptop. The Magic Jack application itself is one big resource hog on older systems. I'm using an old P4 system myself to run it and i notice when i try to do anything other than run Magic Jack it's slow as all hell. So the best fix for this would be when you're on the phone talking to someone don't mess with the computer magic jack is running on.

my PC can handle the little resources MJ used i can run high end games and use MJ at the same time if needed, done it before. my WHOLE network has sluggish internet btw if i use MJ

1st question - what speed internet connection are you using? As someone has already stated, MJ uses under 100Kb of bandwidth which is not a lot if you have a decent broadband connection. I was able to use it from Germany last fall on a less-then-high-speed connection but I was not worried about simultaneously surfing the web.

2nd question - what generation computer (cpu, cpu speed, memory, etc) are you running on.

Bottom line - it could be a bandwidth issue if your connection isn't fast enough or it could be a cpu issue if your computer isn't fast enough.

Just for comparisons, I use MJ on an old 1.1GHz Celeron running WinXP with 512M ram but its connected to a 10M down/2M up broadband connection and I can talk and surf w/o any problems.

1> my internet is a 20MB/1MB ADSL connection
2> i am running a Phenom II X4 940, 3.0Ghz with 2GB internal memory and a HD4890 Radeon rest of the specs shouldnt matter much.
and 3> like i said it's not my computer, when i use MJ my whole network has slow internet, problem is that means it's my Router and MJ not working together. question is... how do i fix it... i cannot find any settings for QoS on my router so i can adjust or turn on/off

sorry no can do, but after upgrading my router firmware i can say the problem is SOLVED! topic can be closed/Deleted/used to wipe ur ass/etc.
