Magic Jack review

Post by Drmike »

Here is my little youtube review. I have to say that I learned a lot about the MJ device by reading posts on this site. This review is for people thinking about getting a MJ, not necessarily for pros like you folks. Anyway, here it is:

Excellent video. Drmike does what Dan should be doing for his own product. Maybe Dan should hire him.

Thanks...
I'm fascinated by this MJ gadget. Not quite ready to give up my (somewhat) traditional land-line yet. That is based more on unfamiliarity with the device and its overall reliability and the fact that I can get the right area code, but not the right town exchange for a phone number (as of yet).

Perhaps you could sign-up for a Google Voice number that is local for you, and have that ring your magicJack. This is how I have always used my magicJack.

I've got Google Voice forwarding from Gizmo5 to Skype for free, but discovered the 3 minute inbound limit.

I have kicked FIOS out, all except a broadband connection. So I bought a Skype Out 2.50/month yesterday, but now I am really considering jumping ship (not sure Skype will refund me yet).

Obviously, if cost is the primary factor, MJ is it. I'm looking at a Skype phone for $50 but then realized I would rather have a standalone Skype phone with 2 handsets. And to get past the 3 minute inbound, I'll have to drop another 30 to Skype-In.

911 is it for me. While I could use our security system or call the dispatch as opposed to 911. With 2 young kids in a questionable neighborhood, I can't believe Skype doesn't have 911 capabilities.

So rather than buy a bunch of new gear, as much as I love gadgets, I can use our existing phones and run this on our new HP touchsmart 800 in the kitchen.

Google Voice...sounds interesting. 3 minute limit, is that for Google Voice?

No limit for GV, think it is a Gizmo5 issue.

I picked up a MJ today. Installed easy, and I dialed my Google Voice number with wife's cell phone, it was forward right to MJ number instantly.

Amazing little device.

I'm thinking about trying to flash my DIR-655 with DD-WRT or might just pick up a thin client.

We'll have a PC in the kitchen but the privacy issues of MJ bother me.

I'm running Windows 7 x86 on my laptop and installed the MJ on a new user account. When on my main account I was getting some sever lockups on my machine.

I think the best idea is to run MJ on a thin client or router.

I must say that I'm pretty ignorant on the topic of flashing a router with a Linux OS... I do know that (at this time) MJ works with Windows or Intel based Macs.

I think you should consider a thin client. If you don't want to configure one you can buy a pre-configured version on Ebay. I had some concerns buying a 400 MHZ Neoclient, but it worked out just fine. Even at that speed, the MJ sounds pretty good. I now have two "phone networks" in the house. The regular one (which already uses VOIP from my cable service) and the MJ offering. Using the TC and one of those cordless DECT 6 phones with multiple extension it was easy to set up a real phone system. I'm a doc so I really need a working phone so I have not abandoned the old system yet. However, even in its current configuration I think it really could work as a primary phone service. If I eventually went with the MJ as primary option I would probably add an UPS to the system for a little security with power outages. My current VOIP has a built in battery that will last up tp 4 hours.

I'm buying a thin client. I already have a spot and UPS for it.

Kind of a no brainer given the weirdness I already saw on my Windows 7 laptop.

I'm guessing MJ didn't like (was frustrated with ; ) the fact that I had it setup on an "empty" new user account.

2nd lockup was a hard one; I had to manually power down the laptop!

With all of the Win7 hype I thought it would roll out working well. Hope that it is not Vista revisited. I think you will be happy with the TC option. Are you buying one pre-configured or are you going to "roll your own."
