I've only had a magicjack for a week. It's been a bad week. People can hear me, but everything they say to me is scrambled and choppy. I've tried everything I can find. I have a dedicated 1.9Ghz computer running XP pro and a d-link router. I have removed the router and connected this single computer directly to the 6mbps cable modem. No change.
So here's my question. I'm trying the "block servers" method. But every time I type this command "route add 67.90.16.6 mask 255.255.255.255 192.168.1.2" i get this error message the "route addtion failed:either the interface index is wrong or the gateway does not lie on the same network as the interface. Check IP address table for the machine." Obviously I'm lost. I have no idea what this message is telling me. can anyone help me make this command work?
newbie question - why doesn't the route command work

Let's try a more generalized test of your internet environment.threepwood wrote:I've only had a magicjack for a week. It's been a bad week. run the diags at http://myvoipspeed.visualware.com/index.html using a location near you. You should get 4 distinct categories of results. If not, try another closeby server. At worst, try the USA-Dulles which will give you a full scope analysys.
Interpreting these results will let you know if your underlying internet connection is suitable for any type of voip, magicjack or otherwise.
Good Luck

It comes up all green dots without the router. With the router it comes up all green except for Qos which comes in at 82% (without the router it comes up 90%). But like I said, with or without the router the people on the other end are just garbage (although they say my voice is perfect). I've done all the standard stuff (changed usb ports, disabled usb power management, given the magicjack.exe process high priority, given background services high priority, changed from wireless to wired phones, plugged and unplugged the router and modem numerous times, upgraded the router firmware, borrowed a neighbors different router). Nothing has fixed it. There are some strange quirks though. Calling the 909 "backtalk" number is always perfect. Long distance calls start out Ok but within 2 minutes are breaking up. Local calls seem to last longer, but eventually also start breaking up. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks guys. And thanks pagemen as your comment helped me realized it needed to be 192.168.0.2 instead of .1.2. I blocked about 4 different servers and then it connected to San Diego and everything got perfectly clear. So it clearly is a server issue. I did a ping to all the servers on the wiki server list and now I am blocking about 6 really bad servers for me and all is well. Actually better than i had hoped.
But you know, it shouldn't be this hard.
Thanks again.

I'm glad to hear you were able to get things working properly.
I agree with you that MJ's network engineers should be monitoring their servers for these types of conditions, and making proper adjustments without the need for these extreme user intervention methods.
Still, it is fun to see fellow users like you "beating the system," so to speak.
