Majic Jack with air card and data usage

Post by lhend »

Hi, I am new to the forum, and I have had magic jack for about 1yr. I have been using it on a dsl line with no problems. I am moving and will have to use a verizon air card for my internet. My question is with the 5gig limit, if I use magic jack as my second phone, will it use up my data limit rapidly. I assume others are using it with an air card. Thanks

I've seen reports that MJ uses about 80kbps while active. If so (and I am not confusing bits/sec with bytes/sec), without doing the math, my estimates say you're good for over 1000 minutes of active talking.

I don't know how much bandwidth MJ uses in an idle state, if any. If you're a heavy downloader of movies and wares, you could be in trouble with a 5gb limit.

Will they just charge you extra for the over use, or will they shut you down?

wireless internet card service is a big ripoff. the plan I have is that after 5g the system crawls to 128kpbs not even enough to check emails. I usually consumed by limit by the middle of the month and the only way to get more is to switch to a more expensive plan. Lucky for me, I'm using my neigbors's internet!

When nothing else is available, you don't have allot of options. I hear satellite is worse. I will just have to stay away from downloading movies or tv shows. Only looking to use the magic jack for some long distance calls during the week, so I can save some cell minutes
