Any idea how to fix this?
I'm having the same problem! It shuts down after any out going or incoming call. It worked great until the update.

Hoping someone will have an answer. <|:-(

This is the reply to an email I sent to MJ which "fixed" my contact list not being loaded. It reverted my MJ back to the 8/1/2009 update.
Question is will it stay this way or will the new update be pushed through again? So far it hasnt but it has only been about an hr. I guess time will tell. This should also fix any other problems people are having after the latest "update"
Here you go:

Hi Joe,

Please perform the steps below.

1. Open My Computer and look for magicJack(Vista Only Drive).
2. Right click and hit Explore.
3. Make sure to set it to "Show Hidden Folders"
4. Open magicjack folder.
5. Delete the file named CfgCache.dat

Run the upgrade/downgrade link :
http://upgrades.talk4free.com/upgrade/2 ... pgrade.exe

Please confirm me if this works.

Best Regards,

Jonathan

I assume this is for vista?

I need it for XP.
Now my MJ is not working for even 1 call. I get a rapid busy if I try to call a #. My contacts and call list have now disappeared. ~this sucks~

Lost Contacts

Post by MAKAW »
After wasting a bunch of time with MJ support chat and doing a bunch of sh*t they suggested that didn't work, here's what they suggested that finally did work:

Control Panel --> Network Connections --> right click on your local area connection then click properties.

Click "use the following DNS Server address" and enter 67:90:152:122, click OK then close. (Nothing in alternate.)

Unplug MJ, restart computer, plug it back in, all is right with the world again.
I was hoping this was the fix for my lost contacts which caused me to log in this evening ---- but it didn't fix the problem. Still looking....

Lost Contacts

Post by MAKAW »

The fall back to the 08/01/2009 DID restore my Contacts! Thanks.

I too was unable to find the file to delete, and I had optioned Explorer to show hidden files. I figured, what the heck and did the download anyway. It worked.

Now -- if I can get resolution to the "Beep" issue, get 3-way calling to work, and get faxes to go through, I won't need a landline.

Thanks for your forum. Good stuff.

ok done. I think it's working. (only did one test call after going through the fun of getting my PC to reconize MJ).
All my contacts & call logs are gone. But that would figure if it rolled me back to Oct. I've only had MJ for 3 or 4 weeks. So I'm at Square 1, well w/ the exception of have bought magic beans yesterday.

So, what happens if/once you reboot? I guess MJ will update and the fun will start all over.

Oh, and thanks all! this is a great forum <|:-)

Should I start pulling my hair out now? I can only hope that when MS server is back up, I can up date and hope that will solve my problem.

After reading all of this I'm glad I don't have any contacts stored on the magic jack it self. Every thing is on my cordless phones. I have called a few people already that have magic jack and warned them about the contacts now uploaded to the server.

Kind of bugs me what are they doing with that data?

Good thing my Magic jack is installed on an old laptop with no data on it and isolated from the rest of my network. Wonder what else they are uploading.

I'm surprised there hasn't been more discussion about this. Some of the early forum posts expressed concern that MJ had access to your IE Favorites. It seems like personal phone lists would be of even greater concern. Maybe in the post-9/11 era, we've just given up any expectation of privacy.

My MSSE virus software has been very curious about MJ software, the past week. Almost daily, it asks if it can upload a part of the software to their servers for review.
Enjoys a daily VOIP cocktail made from:

-One shot Magic Jack
-One shot TK6000
-One shot NetTalk Duo
-Two shots Ooma (it's bigger)

Shaken, not stirred.

Google Voice is the chaser.

YES! YES! YES!

my MJ is working GREAT now. Perfectly clear calls! and I'm on Wi Fi ! It's not crashing anymore.
Now if I can just get my desktop back to normal, I'll be happy.

What date is everyone showing for the 1.90.521.2 update? Mine shows 12/24/09, but I saw another post saying it shows 12/25/09?

My MJ crashed and now telling me I need to plug in my MJ als

Post by cmankat »

I have the same problem (feature) after an update (I think).

Everything goes well until it's time for splash screen to go away. At that point I get (in bold red) "Warning you must plug MJ into USB"

I am running Windows XP. Is there any way to remove the update?

TIA,

Carl M.

Contacts and Call Log not local

Although my contacts and call log are current in the softphone display, the local copies within the doongle have not been updated since 1/5/2010. Can others confirm this.
So it appears to me that both are being housed somewhere on MJ servers.
This expands the privacy issue to all calls and not just those listed in the contact list.
Also, was there once a MJ menu option to export the contact list? I think I recall seeing it at one time. There should be at least a means of maintaining both the contact list and call log info local.

Just curious... most have found that this link no longer works... did anybody who saved the downgrade file have it available? If I can get my hands on it, I will gladly host it on my webserver.

No sorry, I just clicked run without thinking to save it first. Now that I think of it that would have been the smart thing to do. DOH!
Why in the world would they ( MJ) have stopped it from working? Maybe to many read my post here and they don't want people back on the previous version???? Or they just made it available last night when I contacted them???
You can try contacting them like I did at [email protected] and see if they can help.

It definitely bothers me that MJ is saving my contacts on their servers without allowing me to opt out of that. Wouldn't be surprised if they save or try to gather much more data too. Perhaps they even record calls? (which would be trivial for them)

But I'm not surprised given the wording in their licensing agreement and their clear philosophy of controlling everything associated with the product and jamming advertising down the MJ user's throats too. The product is fine for the price, but certainly comes with some downsides.

It's seem clear MJ is not concerned with our privacy (MJ users) and is purposely taking control of contact and calling info and features to lock us into their product and probably use the data for advertising purposes as well.

I assume it is the file now being offered on http://www.magicjack.com/9/customercare.asp

Just click and save.
NOW whether it is the SAME file I do not know but I assume it is since it says it fixes the contact list problem. I did not run it, of course, since my problem was fixed by going back to the previous "upgrade" a la downgrade.
All I can say is try it and see.
I was most likely the the test subjest for it and when I told them it worked they must have put it on their web page for all to use.
Give us feedback here and lets us know if it fixes it and what version it puts your MJ too.

Thanks

I think that is something new. Someone had posted that the download was no longer available. Guess MJ did not want everybody getting ahold of it.
I'm currently uploading that download you posted on a file sharing site (slow going cause I'm on wi fi). The version is 1.80.4992.3499.
I will post it just as soon as it's finished.

Yep that is the Aug 2009 one which is what everyone was on prior to the Jan 2010 update, which screwed up the contacts for some people ( me and you for two).
When I ran the update last night that was given to me by support it reverted back to that version.. I can only assume that is the patch which is now posted on their web page which I mentioned in the prior post ..

Well, I have already rebuilt my contact list. So I'm not going to try it. I'm going to leave well enough alone. I have the un-update file saved so the next time MJ updates me I can fight back.

Majic Jack.exe application error

Post by shumiron »

Has anyone else had the problem with magicjack.exe crashing after making or receiving a call? This started for me and some other folks right after the first of the year. Everytime MJ is used the .exe crashes as soon as call is terminated. They had me change to a different DNS server address but still have the problem.

The 24-Dec-2009 UPDATE is what is causing me issues (I never got an update with a January date stamp on magicJack.exe).

It is NOT a contact list problem that I have. Specifically, ever since the 24-Dec update was pushed to my PC's (BOTH of them as I have TWO magicJacks), I have had calls to Canada disconnect at approximately 5 minutes and calls to U.S. numbers disconnect in approximately 35 minutes ... NOT GOOD !!!

I just downloaded the 1-August-2009 update.exe (update14.exe made available in a post above). I ran it and it DID revert me to the Aug 1 date stamped magicJack.exe, BUT within 30 seconds of that update completing, magicJack AUTOMATICALLY re-updated me to the 24-Dec-2009 version.

Does anyone know how to BLOCK auto-updates from magicJack???

In close to 2 years there have been many suggestions on how to block a MJ update, I have yet to find one that works, sorry
All I can suggest is you email [email protected] and let him know whats happening. Of course it ISNT Dan who gets the email but that is what I did when I had the contact list problem. They held off updating again when one reverted back to the Aug 2009 release, but since they "fixed" the contact list problem they will now push thru the 12/24 update.
Other than that I have no other suggestions, sorry.

Sorry, I wish I new how to block the updates. Same thing happened to me again. and I ran the update14.exe again but it only lasted a few minutes then MJ hit me with there new update. Good news I got my contacts and call log back. At least it has not crashed today. I hope the Microsoft up dates I installed last night did the trick. Time will tell.

On the down side......due to MJ tech support running me in circles and jumping through hoops w/ all the bull about it's your anti-virus program, It's your Zone Alarm etc etc causing the problem. I got busy and left my PC unprotected for a night and got a worm.
Oh well, all is well now.
Hard lesson learned I guess.

Do you leave your PC running 24/7 and leave your MJ on?

My MJ worked fine until I had to reboot for a program install.
That's when I got hit w/ the magic update that took out my contact list, and call log. and crashed after every call, in or out.
It seems to be ok today. Has not crashed. Hopefully it will continue. 8)

Why do SOME people have choppy sound while others don't? Why do some drop connection while other don't? LOTS of things happen to some MJ users and not to others.
The wonderful world of electronics and MANY MANY different types, versions, hardware, software on PC's AND PC's themselves.
Not to mention some people who all they know is how to turn on their PC's and nothing more.
So it all adds up to hit or miss. Hopefully for any company it is way more hit than miss.

Yes in large part...
One needs to know more than turning the key and the car starting. Same goes for having a PC... Spyware, viruses, background programs, etc....

Or when my mom's PC failed and I had to go over to look at it and I told her it was because she let the smoke out and that's why it stopped working, since it ran on smoke :)

Also telling someone when they ask you how did you fix it and you say FM. FM?? F******* magic..
