A Couple Quick Questions Before I Commit.

I'm just about ready to buy one of these things, but my situation is unusual.

I have no interest in plugging this thing into my computer, I merely want the SIP information so I can make calls with a SIP client on my phone.

What I've read is the company recently pushed an update to these devices which change where the SIP info is located.

My question is, can I download one of these older tools, unplug my ethernet so that it cant update and is 'stuck' at the older version, get my info and that's it?

Is the MagicJack service itself capable of knowing what kind of phone I'm binding it with? I've seen people posting updated user-agent strings but I'm still unsure.

I've noticed as well that people have had (limited?) success with using the product with PBXes. Is that still the case?

I guess all I'm asking is, is MagicJack currently capable of being a SIP provider as well as giving me a way to call PSTN numbers as well?

You will need to plug it into your PC at least once to grab the sip details!!

What cell phone platform do you plan to run softphone on?

Clever idea to keep MJ from updating but I think you will still be pushed to latest version. Very basic original technique will still allow you to manually discover sip details from latest firmware, just not done automagically as some newer tools did.

Are you referring to pbxes.org or to digital pbxes in general?

I plan to run the softphone on the Android (sipdroid) and iPhone (siphon) platforms.

I'm curious as to the technique you described, and I'm surprised that even disabling the jack's connection to the internet entirely isn't enough to prevent it from updating. I wonder where it even gets the info from. I guess this Dan character really is magical.

I was referring to pbxes.org in my original post, yes. I should have made that clearer. But I suppose if it worked on pbxes.org it should work on other pbxes. (Voxalot?)

The main reason that you have to dump your SIP credentials after every update is competed magicJack changes the password.

Some forum members also have to run a program called MJMD5 proxy. This could further complicate your goal of running magicJack on your Android. On the other hand some members report that they do not require the MJMD5 proxy.

I personally have been able to dump my SIP credentials using a program entitled The Cheat which runs on the Apple Mac platform. I am able to run a softphone using the SIP credentials on the Mac. I personally do not find enough incentive to play a game of cat and mouse with magicJack as their are other sound alternatives.

Right now I've been doing the 'popular' Google Voice + SipSorcery + SIPGate, and I'm getting a little annoyed that every month there's about a week where nothing works.

I liked the idea of MagicJack because it was just one payment; like, $40 and I'm set for the year. I don't really mind having to pay for a good service. But companies like Vonage who charge $40/mo for VoIP is ridiculous.

But yeah, I'd love to hear about any other (non-free?) solutions you might have. I'd rather not have to play cat-and-mouse as you said and it doesn't seem like MagicJack is good for this.

If your gonna use MJ then a thin client maybe the best way to go. If you want to use an ata pick your preferred provider there are tons of them. If you want to use your ata with MJ read the sticky threads in this section and you should have access to ALL you need to get MJ up and running. Good luck
