Router Experiences / Suggestions
I'm new to MJ and am just now getting around to having wireless broadband hooked up. I haven't bought a wireless router yet but a couple I am looking at are the d-link DIR-615 and the netgear WGR614L open-source router. Before I buy, I was wondering if anyone wants to share their experiences with their own routers or suggest something that is know to work pretty well including with mj. After I buy is too late to ask so now is the time to hear about every-ones favorite router. The cheaper the better but I would really like to spend less than $100 anyway.

I briefly had a DIR-615. Junk! It worked with MJ, no problem. However, it wreaked havoc with my other VOIP services. It's notorious for such problems. (I upgraded to latest firmware.)starrouter wrote:I'm new to MJ and am just now getting around to having wireless broadband hooked up. Enjoys a daily VOIP cocktail made from:
-One shot Magic Jack
-One shot TK6000
-One shot NetTalk Duo
-Two shots Ooma (it's bigger)
Shaken, not stirred.
Google Voice is the chaser.

One of the offices where I work is using a netgear WPN824 that works real good for them.
I have always thought the Linksys WRT54GL (GL is the one with open source firmware) would be a great router. it has over 2-thousand 5-star reviews on the egg but all references to MJ say you have to flash with tomato which wouldn't be too big a deal but I'm not crazy about flashing a new piece of hardware with 3-rd party firmware.
Any other router suggestions ? I probably won't be buying a router for another week.

For what it's worth, I'm using a non-Tomato WRT54GL without any problems. I'd considered Tomato, but I'm of the mind "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" attitude. I realize Tomato adds great features (including needed QoS enhancements), but I'm not as into technical challenges as I used to be. Gettin' old I guess.

Thanks for the comment Tom, that certainly renews my interest in the GL. One I'm considering as a temporary measure is the $25 Trendnet 432BRP. It's cheap, works decently, and is reported to work with MJ. Untile I can get something a little better. Speaking of doing things on the cheap - I already have a WAP54G Access Point. Couldn't I just use static addressing on my modem and NIC's with my WAP ?
