Been 2 Years w/ Ooma-NO PROBLEMS AT ALL!
I spent nearly 3 years trying to make MJ work right-it never did and if you are getting tired of the problems, I would highly suggest going to Ooma.com and getting a real phone with NO PHONE BILL! Not even $20.00 a year-NOTHING-Just buy the hardware from Walmart and pick and number and thats it-
Total output-between $200.00 and $250.00-then you can go back to perfect sounding calls again and never have to deal with the other white noise and echo that this thing provides. Why I stayed with MJ for so long is a real mystery but I should have bailed much sooner. The amount of aggrivation and pissed off people this thing created is incredible. People were constantly complaing about the bad sounding calls to them. So, anyway-I just stopped in to say that I have now had Ooma for 2 years and would not switch to any other system for anything. It's really, really good. Go to Ooma.com and watch the video-they have a 90% approval rate from users.

It's getting close to 2 years without trouble with magicjack for me. Then again I don't use it very much. Now when I first started on it back in 2007. It was a pain. But now, no worries. Have helped about 6 or 7 of my friends & family get set up on MJ too. No problems reported from any of them, and one has a teenager who's constantly on it.

Magicjack was my first experience with voip; I recently started using Skype and Sipgate one as a back up. I'm willing to pony up a few bucks to try out a new service but $200+ is more than I'm willing to gamble at this point, although I suppose anything's possible.
While I've certainly experienced a mix of joy and frustration with my little bundle of joy, this last "Lucky You" upgrade is starting to wear on me. However, I see this morning I'm still in business.
Even with Google Voice, I like the idea of having a traditional handset or phone from which to dial out and receive calls. So for now, I'll continue to tolerate MJ and fall back on Skype and Sipgate but I still have hopes that MJ will eventually live up to its promise.

At first I was a little nervous about putting out the $200.00 as well and especially as it was still new and not had alot of road time with it's users. All I really had to go on was word of mouth from other users and after fighting MJ for so long I had to do something. I was close to reinstalling my old land line again but it was not needed and I have been 100% satisfied with Ooma.
If Mj is now working right, then I say keep it. But for me and many others a few years ago it was one big headache after another and they lost many people. If it works good for you then keep it as the price is right for sure, although it is nice not to have my pc running all night to take calls. With Ooma all you need is internet connection, no computer is needed.

I would say that I more than just tolerate MJ. I am actually a happy customer. Maybe because i started with limited expectations and also because MJ supplements my cell phones and is not a primary line.So for now, I'll continue to tolerate MJ
I do not expect anything except staying in business for a couple of years and keeping the price low. I do not want any improvement if it means a higher price/taxes or a highert investment. If somebody has to live up to his promises, it is our semi monopolistic ISPs, their mediocre to miserable service is the main reason MJ and in lesser extend other VOIP services have so many problems.but I still have hopes that MJ will eventually live up to its promise.
I had ooma a year before I decided to let MJ go so that's 2 years not one. I am not trying to knock MJ to each his own.cdwaldron wrote:Saxman,

Sorry CD but you have me mistaken for someone else. I've been a Ooma user for 2 years now. Since 08". I did come on this site last year for a minute to talk about how good is and let some people know that it has definetly been well worth every cent spent.
Some people initally said that the company may grab the money and run. Well, if they folded up their tent and left town tomorro (which won't happen), I would have paid $200.00 for 2 years of clear local and long distance service-So far that's about $8.00 a month! Not bad! And the longer they stay around the less my initial investment of a whopping $200.00 becomes. Money well spent.

The annual "regulatory recover fee" only applies to the newest hardware called the Telo.dj62 wrote:I do hear good things about the service, but I did read that it is not free for new users anymore, there is a $11 and change annual fee.
If you buy the older hardware called the Hub, or Core (that's the boxed bundle of the Hub with the remote unit called the Scout), then you are grandfathered without having to pay the yearly fee.
The only exception is for Hub or Core units bought at Costo. Apparently, those units are NOT grandfathered, and you are subject to the annual fee.
Still, even with the fee, it is cheaper than MJ (annually, and then over the long term), and allows the elimination of the computer from the equation. That could be worthwhile to some MJ users who suffer from chronic problems.

I should have mine in a few days. Lets compare notes. It may take me a little while to get it setup right. I need to figure out where the Hawking Broadband Booster and switch go in the setup. I may need to spend time on their tech forum or attempt to get through by phone and I hear thats real tough to do. I do think we will be getting some clear calls real soon though.
Saxman, I think it has only been one year since you began using Ooma. Please continue to keep us up-to-date on your experience.

CD-Last time I say this-I got Ooma in 08' not 9'-That post has been edited or altered. For 2 years it has worked PERFECT!
I really don't care if you or anyone else wants to get one as I make nothing for the reviews I'm providing. I just hate seeing anyone waste anymore time on a faulty system that is not even a real phone but more of a toy.
Most people that have had Magic Jack are mad at this product and there are many people out there like myself that are watching Dan continue to rip people off with this thing. When I see all the money spent on the dumb infomercials, I just keep hoping the FCC will step in and stop this. His toy needs alot more R+ D and testing before he is allowed to sell anymore of them. On the other hand, there are satisfied MJ customers, like me. It's not my favorite of my three VOIP services (that honor would go to the TK6000), but my MJ has not failed me.

Good deal. And hopefully you will never have the same experience that many of us early-on users had. It was terrible. I gave it 3 years to get it right and I could never count on a clear, clean call that would not drop, echo, click or make some other background noise.
I had long time friends complain alot and I had to do something, so I bagged it.
Hopefully, Dan's thrown some of that profit at the tech support instead of ads and it's getting fixed. Hope so. There is no reason to have to use a seperate phone line if you have one already installed for the internet. Now, if he can get it to run without the need of a computer!

Oh, thank you for trying to take away a service I am happy with!!I just keep hoping the FCC will step in and stop this
Yes, probably one out of three MJ purchasers stop using it , but the other two do not. Yes, we know all about dan's business practices and about all the shortcomings of MJ and blabla but it still works well for very many of us. So why don't you go to the Ooma forum and try to cheer up the folks there ?! And forget about the ripoff report. At least half of their postings, not just about MJ, are total junk.
I don't think I said anything about taking it anywhere. I'm telling you what me and many other people put up with. Today, as I look at the number of people posting problems on this site, I continue to see alot of people that are not getting what they paid for. Now, if you consider that a fair deal, then you need to be in the used car business.
I for one don't like throwing away my money on bogus "projects" like this one. Me and many others were ripped off. Many still are and with lousy service and 0 tech support, if you think it's a good deal then keep getting it. For alot of people it's not.
So, you need to speak only of your own experiece with it. Ripoff Reports is a real site with real people. If what they say offends you, don't read it. I could care less if anyone goes with Ooma or any other system, but people need to know what works and what don't. Had I had more user information on MJ, I would never have bought it. But, at the time it was still new. And when your phone starts sounding like mine did, you too will bail.

And what did they pay for ? In the terms of used car business, they expect a 17000 $ car for 1700 ( because the salesman told them that it was just like new). I got here a 1700$ car worth 3400 and I am fine with that.I continue to see alot of people that are not getting what they paid for
No doubt my ATT line was MUCH better than MJ ( or any other VOIP). It was 600/year.
