Magicjack UDP ports to open in firewall

Post by djem38 »

It's so strange and I cannot understand why magicjack works fine if these UDP ports 10000-65535 are open in firewall? I have it many times to open only a specific range of ports for outbound connection, and it doesn't work. But when I use these range of ports from 10000-65535 then everything is fine. Why?

It seems that this magicjack is putting our network system open for vulnerability that all ports are allowed. I need a very detailed explaination of this matter. What should be the specific UDP ports used by magicjack to open or allowed in the firewall?

If you have a properly working router you should not have to open any ports MJ will open only what it needs for RTP using nat.

mJ uses a port range from 10000 to 30000.

In using a Verizon DSL modem I find that you have to set it to open ports 10000-65535 for magicjack to work.

I would like to have some comments if something easier and less risky works.

Update:

In one location, the Westel modem by Verizon has a high seurity firewall and blocks a lot of ports. I have reconfigured it to open ports 62000 to 65535 and it seems to work fine.

In another location, a different Westel modem does not need any tweaking.

mreents........

If you have the same Westel modem as I do...

in your Internet Explorer (or equivalent),
type in the address 192.168.1.1

Asks for a user and password....
the user may be blank or you may need to enter "admin"
password: "admin" (do not enter "" quotes)
These are the standard answers unless you or whoever set up your modem changed them.

You may need to try it a few times to see what combo of user name and password works. If successful, a menu for firewall settings shows up.

The easiest way is to have a low level firewall setting ( assuming you have your network connected to a secure hub or router)
By using a low firewall setting, this automatically opens all the ports you need.

If you need to tweak it more it is a little more complicated.
