Don't hold your breath waiting. We have US phone numbers because MJ is tightly related to YMAX, which is a full fledged CLEC in the US. YMAX is not licensed as a CLEC in Canada. Until MJ makes a contract for DIDs with a Canadian phone company or YMAX becomes a Canadian phone company, there won't be any DIDs in Canada. Since any path to adding Canadian DIDs would require MJ to make an investment using real money, I don't expect this to happen in my lifetime.
As a parallel, I can't think of any "first class" US-based VoIP phone companies that offer Canadian phone numbers for the same price as US phone numbers, if at all.

actually, I'm just as happy having a US area code. when I was asked to make my selection, I tried a state where a friend lives and by happen chance got an area code exactly the same as his so now not only can I contact him but he can call me just like any other local call. Now is that kewl or what eh?
I read a bit about do not trust - spammer at the following thread, not the whole thing though.

Canadian area codes are finally available!
Please note that Canadian area codes for MagicJack became available as of late November 2009. There are some limitations:
First, the Canadian codes are only available for those registering a Magicjack. At this time, previously registered numbers may not switch to a Canadian number.
Second, the numbers available are limited. When I last checked, only 3 provinces, Ontario, Manitoba, and Quebec, had some area codes listed, but not many.
Third, Canadian numbers cost an extra $10.00 per year. I had waited almost two years to register my Magicjack while waiting for a Canadian number. My area code was not available, but I chose one for another portion of Ontario.
A representative told me more numbers/area codes are being worked on because there has been such a strong demand from Canadian customers. I also asked if Canadian customers will be able to switch to a new number one time for free, like American customers are able to, but she did not have an answer for me.
If you go to the Magicjack website and the list of area codes, scroll down below the US area codes and you will notice the new list of Canadian codes.

I must admit being pleasantly surprised that MagicJack actually made Canadian area codes available. Another example of "good things come to those who wait."

Re: Canadian area codes are finally available!
A friend did the customer service chat thing and verified this to be true. So he went online to order a new MJ from their site. When ordering, he selected that he was in Canada from the drop down menu and that created the drop menu where he could pick Ontario. He completed the order and clicked next. The order form came back showing United States now instead of Canada. All other countries were now removed and only US appeared. Since he could not change it from US to Canada, he just clicked next. Another page came up with an error. So, from their site, he cannot order a new MJ for Canada.
I was watching this as he did it and we tried it twice.
Any ideas? How can you order a MJ so he can get a 416 Toronto number?
He can go to http://techdirectcanada.ca/flyer/ and buy 1 from them for $43.99. Any idea if they'll allow him to register it and get a 416 number? Or to get a Canadian number, does it have to be bought directly from them. Can they tell?
Ok, last question, on his current MJ, he bought the extra 5 years service because they advertised 1 free number change and that when Canadian numbers were available, you could change to it. He doesn't mind paying again to buy a new MJ to get the Canadian number but will they transfer his 5 extra years over to a new MJ?
Thanks for reading.

this company clearly doesn't treat Cdn customers fairly. I have a US area code too and wanted to change to 416. A while back an agent told me it could be done but the website hadn't been updated to list Cdn area codes in the drop down menu.
I am now told I can never change my number to a Cdn area code but would need to buy a new MJ and then pay an extra $10 per year for that "privilege". what a terrible way to treat existing customers. shabby to say the least.

For any other Ontarians registering around this time, there's only Ontario numbers left in the 289 area code, more specifically, Burlington (289-813-04xx), and Oakville (289-812-04xx). Moreover, there's only about ~25 available under each one. Slim pickings :S Would have been nice to have a bit more choice, or at least be able to change to another Canadian area code w/o having to buy a whole new MJ+$10.
The current website indicates area codes available in both 416 and 647 for Toronto. I spoke to another agent today about switching my US area code for a Cdn area code and she advised that "their engineers are working on it" but couldn't give me a guesstimate of the time.
she clearly said they were planning on making it available, but I won't hold my breath.

I am sorry you friend is having difficulty getting a Canadian area code. I waited almost two years, so I definitely understand how frustrating this is. Here is what happened in my situation:
I purchased my MJ two years ago after being told Canadian area codes would be "available soon." I kept waiting for Canadian area codes to become available. I did not register the MJ with a US number. Based on what I am reading about not being able to switch from a US number, I am glad I waited. I was told by numerous MJ representatives to get a US number and that I would be able to switch to a Canadian number once they became available. Perhaps this will be the case in time. After waiting two years for the option to chose a Canadian number, I was thinking the chances were very slim for this to ever become available. I am glad I was proven wrong.
Is your friend trying to order a MJ and have it shipped to Canada? It seems like he was unable to order from the MJ site if I understand correctly. I sent a message to a MJ chat representative and was told Canadian customers are able to order and that only new MJ's are able to register for a Canadian number for an extra $10.00 per year.
As far as buying elsewhere, I really do not see why it would matter, since it is still an unregistered MJ device. To me, it would be the same issue if you or your friend received a new one as a gift.
Does your friend know anyone in the United States who would be able to order a MJ for him and then ship it to him? I only mention this in case the issue of not being able to order through the website comes up again.
If your friend does try ordering through the website, and has trouble again with the order, please have him start a chat and let the representative walk him through this. It may be a hassle going back and forth between the order form and chat window, but he should be able to place an order and have it shipped to Canada. I was able to do this and I know others who have also done this.
Best wishes,
Canadianlady

Yes You need to buy a new device to get Canadian phone number and it is one choice...You will not be able to change your Canadian number to another Canadian number for the same device.......When registered you will not have access to Canadian number for free change number.... (Answer from higher level support of MagicJack)
I agree with you.. the info was when available it will be possible to change for Canadian number....( It was an answer to sell MJ to Canadian... now you have to buy a new device for a Canadian number) , and there is a 10$ extra each year for Canadian number.

Good news (I think)
I wrote Dan Borislow and got a reply from his manager.
Here's what he said this morning, 12/11/09.
Dear Len,
Dan asked me to respond to this.
The option for existing customer's to change to a Canadian phone number will be available shortly. No need to buy a new magicJack.

This post contained no new information for this issue, just yet another link from you to another thread.
Which yet again contained no information to the subject of "Liar Liar"...
Hence my response.

A Canadian number is $10 per year. I just picked up my second magicJack and got my Canadian number and I will pay another $19.95+$10 USD a year from now. I probably won't renew my US number.lenw wrote:That's not the way I understand it. but, rules may change, who knows?
The rules have changed regarding changing from a US number to a Canadian number. It will not be free as initially promised. The charge for a Canadian number is $10/year on either on a new unit or when they set up their system so that we'll finally be able to change an existing US number to a Canadian number.
Talk about false advertising. If you want one, you have to go buy another one, and even then you might not get one as they are running out.
From the Chat.
Charlin: Honestly, we are currently running out of Canadian area codes, but, there will be more to come soonest.
me: so If i buy a new one, i can get one, but not if I already have one
Charlin: Yes, but that is only momentarily.
Me: so you are admitting that you are falsely advertising that it available, when it is clearly not.
me: i could go out buy one then you turn around and say sorry we are out
Charlin: It is not removed from the website for there still be more Canadian area codes to added.
Me: But if there are out when you register it, you are then out of luck and have to buy another new one?
Charlin: No. You need not for changing of existing magicjack number can also be change to Canadian number as well in the near future.
Me: without a firm date in place you are false advertising
end chat.

the fasle advertising
The website says you can switch to any of the available area codes, with a link to the area codes. The Canadian area codes are listed. Hence false advertising.
You know, if I can get a 416 or 647 for $10/year, I'll take it. The company probably has costs involved in doing this in Canada as opposed to doing this in the US. It's sitll a deal.
Now if I could just get the better sound quality that I had before Christmas back.
Is anyone else having much worse quality since around New Years?

no more one time free switch
Not only have they broken their promise of one free switch of area code as well as having Cdn area codes available for existing customers by the end of December, - it's still not available and they now will charge $4.95 for the switch if it ever arrives.
The product is decent but their marketing is awful and their public relations efforts are non existent.
They sound like snake oil merchants.

What a load. Bought a new Magic Jack yesterday, didn't have a credit card handy so I selected the option to "Get a free US number (Can be changed at any time in the future) in the installer. Turns out that having done that, they won't let you change it over to a Canadian number!
What a bunch of crooks. Worst support I've *ever* come accross. Absolutely disgusting. I will be urging anyone NOT to support those criminals. Time to register complaints with the CRTC, BBB & anyone else I can think off.

BBB
I posted a complaint with the Palm Beach FL BBB. Magic Jack lied to them saying existing customers would be able to switch to a Canadian area code within 2-3 weeks (from early December) and there would be no charge. The BBB then closed their file on it and MJ goes on lying.

No, it was a rather oblique, nuanced suggestion that you may want to return it whence you purchased. No wonder you didn't get the hint....audiokaos wrote:Who says I bought direct from them? Just FYI, I just purchased a brand-new MJ dongle ( bought and activated last week ) and I had to pay one time only $10 extra for my Canadian/Toronto-based number ( 416-900-xxxx) at first registerring. Then another $69.99 for 5 yrs platinum plan extension and my MJ is good to go until Feb-2016 as my MJ account shown right after I made a payment. Sounds like us Canadians dont have to pay $10/year additional for Canadian numbers as we though. I will confirm this when my credit card statement comes in two weeks from now...grrr wrote:A Canadian number is $10 per year. I've had my MJ for a couple years using a Michigan #. Last week I was able to change it to a Windsor number (519.800.XXXX). Cost was 5 bucks to change numbers and 10 bucks for the CDN number.Kenny2469 wrote:Probably wont happen, im sure they will use that as an excuse to buy a new unit and re-register a new #... Still, minimal costs compared to the dry humping the phone company does to everyone....
