Compaq Ipaq Desktop

I just picked up a Compaq C-700, it has 256 MB of ram, and a 10 GB hard drive. It has a celeron processor with 700 mhz. of power. All I need to do is load windows xp on it and do some minor adjustments and I think it will work fine with the magic jack. Also picked up a hawking bb-1 broadband booster. Got em both for $67, not bad for ebay. Has anyone else played around with the little compaq ipaq desktop?. It seems like a neat little unit that works on the same principle as the other thin clients. convection cooling and a lack of moving parts other than the hardrive. There is a place for a cd-rom, or a floppy, if you wish to install one. and I have plenty of usb ports, however I will continue to use my powered usb hub. I might up the ram to 512 MB, I'll see how it works on 256 MB first. I think it will be fine being that it's going to be dedicated to the magic jack.

Well, I'm having problems getting windows xp home edition to start up. Message on screen says NTLDR is missing. Looks like I'm going to have to repair this copy of xp. Thats what I'm reading from information I'm getting from various forums. Since I don't have a cd-rom on my compaq I had to pull the hard drive and install it in my other computer and then load xp that way. It boots up and works great on my gateway but it won't boot up on my compaq. I did go into Bios and I changed all the passwords and I became the administrator. Anybody have any other ideas I should try?, did I forget to do something.

Make sure jumpers on HDD indicate Master and that BIOS recognized it as Primary drive on FIRST IDE connector.

Make sure to copy the I386 folder and the files from root of your WINXP CD to the HDD. That way you can reinstall windows without CD drive present.

I really appreciate your help. Everytime I sign on to this forum I learn something. I think my magic jack will work a whole lot better once I get it on it's own computer and off my main one. Was going to buy one of Alpmans TC's but this compaq presented itself and with the hard drive and everything it looked like it should work pretty well.

So did it work????

You may want to pursue one of the bare-bones or lite implementations of XP that are floating around the net. Work well with 256MB machines
