NETTALK TK6000 BETTER THAN MAGIC JACK!!! NO PC NEEDED!!!

Post by srvctek »

I would like to say after being a magic jack user for the past few years I have stuck it in the coset to collect dust, I purchased a nettalk tk6000 several months back but it had issues, mainly a sound problem and a need to power cycle every two days to re-gain connection but those days are gone now with a firmware upgrade they just released! The TK6000 Does NOT need a computer to run and for $99 you get LIFETIME service! This thing is basically a mini ata, its working great now and has become my only home phone service plus its supports using a fax!

You might also want to mention they don't offer LNP either. Nor do they own any nationwide infrastructure that is capable of generating revenue like Ymax.

If not needing a PC really floats your boat, you can just provision your MJ sip details on a $50 ATA like many people.

I can see the initial attraction of Nettalk but their longterm viability vs magicjack is much less likely.
Don't throw that dongle away!!!

True, he shouldn't throw away the MJ. If, long term, NT goes away, all he has to do is pay another $20.00 for a year of MJ renewal.

In the meantime, NT customers (like me), can enjoy computer-less VOIP, with the option to use a computer when traveling. No fighting against MJ updates, no cat & mouse games with the SIP credentials.

Either way, the $99.00 start up cost for NT isn't high enough to amount to any real risk. Use it, enjoy it, and dust off the old MJ if things go south in the future.

I concede your points, but just offer another perspective.
Enjoys a daily VOIP cocktail made from:

-One shot Magic Jack
-One shot TK6000
-One shot NetTalk Duo
-Two shots Ooma (it's bigger)

Shaken, not stirred.

Google Voice is the chaser.

Might as well throw mine away in the drawer since it has grown so garbled on the receiving end as to be unintelligible. It's been good for the most part since july '07 but since the first of the year update cycle, it is useless. Which is why I've gone to the TK6000.

TOF... I wasn't sure right off which side you were taking 'cause the quote function didn't come through properly. But, respectfully, I think a lot of these discussions are like arguing which is better, a Ford or a Chevy. I haven't tried the TK6000 since I'm kind of done throwing $$$ at various voip solutions, even if it's a nominal amount.

After the last "Lucky You" upgrade, that could change, but for the moment my little bundle of joy seems to be past its bout with colic and performing reasonably well again.

I appreciate your comments. I believe this is a learning experience for anyone who actively participates in this forum. It will be interesting to see what happens after the surge of new users approach the end of their first year to see how many re-up.

Hi Darkman, I've appreciated your comments in these fora for a long time. My only point was, not the Ford/Chev thing, that my MJ is no longer useable for my purposes. The TK6000 seems to be so far.

I enjoyed using MJ service back when I could still use it or the ATA hookup. I also bought the second year of service and then since things were going swimmingly, I bought the service out to 2014. Then dumb me, MJ decided, no mo ATA. Even then it was useable until the latest "UnLucky You" updates this year.

OK, I'm climbing down from my soap box. I hope you continue to have a great experience and to participate as in the past.

Hard to argue with that!

If I were to be completely candid, I would have to say the MJ has been more of a hobby for me than a tool. Although I use it on occasion for business, I have my cell phone, Google Voice, and now, Skype and sipgate when my little bundle of joy is having conniptions.

I may have to bite the bullet and get a tk6000. In for a penny; in for a pound, I guess.

As far as an ata goes, doesnt that only work through a proxy? I loved my magic jack when i was using it thru my pap2t but as far as I know there was no fix except a proxy...correct me if im wrong because I havent been on here for a while.

Okay badass...sorry for raining on your parade. Bitstopjoe chews people's asses all the time for not searching or for asking the same questions over and over. This is not the correct area to post info about the TK6000. Just for your information.

Hi Darkman, I just signed up for skype last week and so far like it alot. I have a uconnect usb adapter coming from ebay so that I can use my cordless phone with it. Plan on running skype and magic jack through a compaq ipaq desktop workstation once I get xp installed. What are your thoughts on skype and what type of equipment are you using with it?. Right now since I'm basically entry level with it I thought the uconnect usb adapter would be the way to go.

When my MJ is giving me fits, I use Skype and sipgate with a basic headset that plugs into my usb port. It's made by Cyber Acoustics and I think I ma have paid $20 for it four or five years ago.

When my MJ is working, I like Skypejack by pcphonesoft, since I'm not tethered by a cord.

I prefer the look and feel of the Skype softphone over sipgate and I would rate the quality as good or better. However, sipgate wins when it comes to $$$ because Skype charges a connection fee unless you sign up for their unlimited version.

My most recent set up is my sipgate account with Google Voice, which works sweet. I call out using Google Voice and have it connect to my sigpate number. Quality has been outstanding. (Thanks sabresfan!)

I hadn't heard of a uconnect usb adapter. I'm checking it out now. Thanks!

I have both MagicJack and TK6000 NetTalk terminated on a Trixbox. I have to admit that NetTalk was much easier to install. No credential seaching and MD5 complications that MagicJack offers. TK6000 just worked perfectly from the start. I was able to also send Fax. I needed two outbound trunks and also this gives me diversity if I have a problem with one of the providers. TK6000 is a cleaner install. The audio quality of the call is about the same for both providers.
