I'm fairly new to all this stuff and just evaluating feasibility of magicJack.
I have computers running Win 7 (64 bit). I never turn my computers off. But, as you know, Win 7 likes to fall asleep: by default it switches to sleep mode with a monitor and hard drives turned off after 10 or 20 minutes (something like that) of inactivity. So, my questions are:
1) What would happen if someone calls on my magicJack number when computer is asleep? Would it awake a computer and pass a call to my phone? Would it just offer calling party to leave a voicemail?
2) (less important) What would happen if I initiate a call? Would it awake my computer, or would it be necessary to do so before placing a call?
Sure, I can configure my PC not to sleep. But I don't want to do so. I prefer to prolong a life of my computer.
I saw here a topic about running magicJack as a service. Would it make any difference?
I'm not sure I want to buy a Thin Client just for magicJack...
Thank you
magicJack on a sleeping Window7

If the computer is asleep, the phone isn't going to ring because the power to the USB port is turned off.
Letting your computer go to sleep is not going to prolong it's life. That feature is there to reduce your electricity consumption.
Get a small laptop to run MJ on. Their power consumption is low because they are designed to run from a battery.

Why not? Hard drives are turned off, in fact - they are turned off most of the day. I'm pretty sure it will prolong their life.murphy wrote:Letting your computer go to sleep is not going to prolong it's life.
Some windows services able to awake sleeping Win 7 PC. Why couldn't magicJack do the same? Then USB will become ON....
Small laptop... it still would cost more than I saved by getting rid off land-line. So, it looks like only a cheap TC from ebay is a real option. But someone told in another thread(s) that call quality with such weak machines might be not as good.

Call quality is as good as any other machine on a properly configured TC. There are loads of people in this forum that have, and use, or have used them successfully. So don't worry about that.
But even so, a netbook, or cheap laptop is an option too. You can get simple netbooks for $150 to $200, and I just picked up a full featured laptop yesterday for $298 at Walmart...
With most "regular" phone bills at least $30/month, it might take a few months to recoup costs, but still worth it, I think!

Hard drive failure, due to a head crash, is most likely to happen at start up or shutdown when the disk isn't spinning fast enough for the head to fly at the proper altitude above the disk surface.vkelman wrote:Why not? If you going to go that route, you might as well get a ATA (PAP2T-NA) from Amazon for ~$50.00 (NOT EBAY!!!). Low power consumption and you can just shutoff your PC when not in use!GuyOnTheAir wrote:Call quality is as good as any other machine on a properly configured TC.
