Caller ID Fake Numbers

Post by rwhubert »

Several unidentified numbers have appeared on my MJ caller i.d. Of course, it is true that MJ CID numbers are always unidentified. So I tried returning the calls. All of them claimed not to have received calls from me and not to have made calls to my MJ number. I am scratching my head trying to figure out how it came up with those numbers that supposedly called me, but didn't. Has anyone else experienced fake CID numbers with MJ?

A similar thing has happened to me recently. What I would do is perform some reverse look-ups on look-upable numbers, and visit the friendly person who is calling you, and question him face-to-face. Also assure him that 'prank callin' or whatever, is not nice, and may be considered harassment in some states.

Best Wishes

Fake CID calls really fake?

Post by rwhubert »

I have called several of these "mystery" CID numbers back, and all of them have claimed not to have rung my MJ number. I'm beginning to wonder if MJ is capable of fabricating calls that never came in ... or reporting calls that did come in with the wrong CID number. I don't know of any way it could do this, but who knows.

Although you can not spoof your called ID on your MJ it does not mean others who do not use MJ can not spoof their numbers calling your MJ...
Could be someone busting your chops and spoofing his # so you have no idea who it is.

Just a thought..

Oh.... NEVER...NEVER...doubt the GREAT DAN BORISLOW....oh NO! Never doubt Him on this forum. He is capable of anything. He sees, He wants, He will.

I'm prettty sure magicJack wouldn't go around sending random CID to your magicJack.... 'the great Dan Borislow'? If so, I can assure you that it is just a 'test' by the great Dan Borislow, and that TnS will have no idea of it.

How do you know the people who you called weren't lying? They might just be a group of 5 year olds prank calling your number.... :)

Exactly right. Whenever I say MJ can't do something I am talking a standard MJ user plugging his or her dongle into a USB port. No ATA, SIP or anything of the like.

Sure, CID can be spoofed, but why would anyone go to all that trouble? I'm assuming the "fake" CID numbers that I've been getting lately on my MJ line are just the results of malicious mischief. In an case, there is nothing I can do about it, except to ignore them. Thank you all for your input and comments.

Unfortunately it's not that difficult to do. With a few mouse clicks I can make my caller id appear to be whatever number I want. If used for the proper reasons caller id spoofing can be a valuable tool for some people but unfortunately is abused by others for stupid pranks.
