Stop the Splash screen from starting at startup
After much frustration and LOTS of google searching I have come up with an easy way to start magicjack and skip the "one minute of patience" splash screen, making the magicjack start much quicker.
First you need to download Startup Control Panel.
Startup Control Panel is a nifty control panel applet that allows you to easily configure which programs run when your computer starts. It's simple to use and it's very small and won't burden your system. And its FREEWARE.
(Please consider donating a little to the creator of this great tool.)
http://www.mlin.net/StartupCPL.shtml
Install Startup Control Panel then run the application.
You can find the link in the control panel, it will be called Startup.
I had to switch to classic view to find it.
After starting the program click on the HKCU / Run tab.
You need to uncheck cdloader which is what normally starts magicjack.
Next click on the HKLM / Run tab.
Right click anywhere in the box and select "New".
On the line for Program name you can type what you like.
I typed "Magicjack Quick Start" on mine.
On the line for the programs pathcut and paste the following:
"C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Application Data\mjusbsp\magicJack.exe" /foreground /scf _magicJackPersonalDataRoot "I:\magicJack"
Use everything including the quotes.
My magicjack's drive was letter I. If yours is different then change the "I" in the path to what ever your drive letter is.
If you don't know which drive is correct drive, right click on the drive and click explore. It will be the drive with the file that is named "do not use this drive". Then click OK.
Make sure you have a check in the box in front of the key you just created then click the "x" on the top right corner to close the program.
THATS IT!!!!!!
Reboot and see if it works for you.....
I'm using Windows XP. If you are using Vista then I believe the path will be slightly different. Do a search in the forum and you will find the correct path.
Enjoy the quicker startup.
I'm not sure but I believe this also keeps magic jack from rewriting the files on every startup....

Re: Stop the Splash screen from starting at startup
There is also a method described here:jamesgray wrote:After much frustration and LOTS of google searching I have come up with an easy way to skip the "one minute of patience" splash screen, making the magicjack start much quicker.
http://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/MagicJack/ ... _screen.3F
That may rely on disabling autorun on a Windows computer. I have autorun disabled. It worked for me.
Mark
Thanks. I made a note to myself to add your method to the wiki as an alternative if someone wants it to start automatically (and to clarify that the method described there now is for use with autorun disabled, on-demand sort of stuff.).jamesgray wrote:yes, similar method. However this automatically starts Magicjack without having to use a shorcut

after the 3/2010 upgrade, the current method of starting mj without splash screen, described in the wiki, doesn't work so well. the softphone still works, but the outlook addon no longer functions. seems that it only works if magicjackloader.exe is used. using magicjack.exe to start seems to break the connection to the usb drive.
You can also try the free Magicsilence tool at http://tools.pcphonesoft.com .
It stops the dialer popup and also automatically handles taking down the splash screens so they don't tie up your computer. There are no other steps except to download and install it on your computer. If it does not work out for you there is an uninstall program included.

My MJ boots just fine without the splash screen after the last update.astro46 wrote:after the 3/2010 upgrade, the current method of starting mj without splash screen, described in the wiki, doesn't work so well. the softphone still works, but the outlook addon no longer functions. seems that it only works if magicjackloader.exe is used. using magicjack.exe to start seems to break the connection to the usb drive.
Did you remember to uncheck the CD loader? It goes back to active after any update as well as the MJ icon being put back on the desktop ( I delete mine).

right. as i mentioned, the softphone works fine. the problem is with the outlook addon. it no longer works unless magicjackloader is used for startup. has something to do with the softphone upgrade dismounting the mj usb drives .bitstopjoe wrote:My MJ boots just fine without the splash screen after the last update.astro46 wrote:after the 3/2010 upgrade, the current method of starting mj without splash screen, described in the wiki, doesn't work so well. the softphone still works, but the outlook addon no longer functions. seems that it only works if magicjackloader.exe is used. using magicjack.exe to start seems to break the connection to the usb drive.

thanks. i'd like to avoid installing more software, if possible. also, i use the softphone so prefer to have it pop up when i pick up the headset. just want to stop the splash screen.redpepper wrote:You can also try the free Magicsilence tool at http://tools.pcphonesoft.com .

Re: Stop the Splash screen from starting at startup
Mr. Gray ...( or another innocent bystander in the know
)
Could you give me direction on ..
"right click on the drive and click explore". mentioned below.
Where is the drive to right click on? Is it the MJ icon on my desktop?
Thanks for this. It looks to be an ideal solution for me once I get it working right.

Re: Stop the Splash screen from starting at startup
Bamapanda, in xp, open up a file manager and look for a drive that is a usb drive, ie, a letter that is not one of your hard drives. or, go to 'my computer' , and it will show you a list of drives. or right click on 'start', click on explore, and you will see files, folders, and a list of drives. I can't say anything specific about vista or win7, but it will be something similar.BamaPanda wrote:Mr. Gray ...( or another innocent bystander in the know)

unfortunately, none of this will work if you have magic jack started, since the update (see my post above) dismounts the mj usb drives. so you can't look at them. if you shut down mj, unplug and plug in the jack, and don't have autostart operating, you can see the drives, until mj starts.
also, as i mentioned above, this method, of stopping the splash screen will break the outlook addon, if you use it. so far i have not found another simple method of stopping the splash screen that doesn't break the outlook addon.

Thanks to everyone who replied but isn't there some easy way to just tell it not to put a damned icon on my desktop! How do I contact MagicJack to tell them to please FIX this in the next edition?
I do not want to install software. I want Majic Jack to load just like it does now with the startup of my computer. I just don't want it to put an icon on my desktop.
Most programs ask you, when loading, if you want it to put a shortcut on your desktop. MagicJack should do that also.

I found the following tool called AutoSizer ... it works with any window you have, not just magicJack, and it will even minimize the annoying splash screen that appears when you first start up mj.
http://www.southbaypc.com/AutoSizer/
I tried all the other tools (magicBlock, magicSilence and magicHide) but I prefer this AutoSizer tool the best.

Re: Stop the Splash screen from starting at startup
If you want to prevent majicJack from starting automatically, deleting cdloader2 using MSCONFIG or Startup Control Panel is not enough. majicJack automatically copies cdloader2 back to your hard drive after majicJack starts up, which causes it to start up automatically.
You need to install WinPatrol. WinPatrol blocks startups from being added to your computer without your permission. The free version does this as well.
You still have to delete cdloader2 one time using either WinPatrol, MSCONFIG, or Startup Control Panel. But once you delete it, WinPatrol blocks majicJack from putting it back.

Re: Stop the Splash screen from starting at startup
The ONLY time CDLOADER comes back is when MJ does a Lucky You update. I have been running without a splash screen or MJ icon on my desktop for years now and as I said when MJ does do an update then and only then does cdloader come back. 2 seconds with startup control panel takes care of that till the next MJ update...Not exactly a big deal...shmuel wrote:If you want to prevent majicJack from starting automatically, deleting cdloader2 using MSCONFIG or Startup Control Panel is not enough. majicJack automatically copies cdloader2 back to your hard drive after majicJack starts up, which causes it to start up automatically.

I don't understand it. By me it comes back every time I start up majicJack.

All I can say is go over step by step the info I posted here a while ago. I am sure you are missing something cause as I said, unless there is an update I never get the splash screen and my MJ icon never comes back.
Here it is again:

Using Windows 7, I used a slightly different method. ie: not deleting files, etc. Deleting files haphazardly can screw things up. Anyway, I used the shortcut link, modified for Windows 7 (or Vista):
Substitute "K" drive for MJ's cd drive on your computer. Then go to msconfig, uncheck cdloader.exe. Then simply drag the new shortcut (above) to the startup folder in the start menu. Done!
Quite easy.
No programs to download, no risk of malware, (not saying the dl links here in this thread are malware, but that anytime you download anything unnecessarily, there becomes a risk), just a wham-bam-thank-you-ma'am approach.
Cheers.
Code: Select all
C:\Users\Username\AppData\Roaming\mjusbsp\magicJack.exe /foreground /scf _magicJackPersonalDataRoot "K:\magicJack"Quite easy.

Welcome.. Glad it worked for you. Just remember then next time there is a "lucky you" update you will have to delete the CDLOADER again and the icon.shmuel wrote:Thanks bitstopjoe. I used your method and it worked. The startup is much faster and it doesn't try to recopy the automatic startup file.
I also feel it is much faster this way and have been doing it this way for over 2 years now.

Only one way to know, try it and see if it works after you delete the icon and reboot. If not then no, if yes, there you goshmuel wrote:Can you use bitstopjoe's startup method (below) on the HKCU / Run tab instead of the HKLM / Run tab? I only want it for the current user.
