Keeping a MagicJack Phone Number

I just paid for a vanity phone number. How safe is it to assume I can keep it for years to come? I want to print cards, stationery, etc. Also, how important is it to get listed in a phone book? I assume MagicJack numbers cannot get listed?

You will have the privilege of paying $10/yr to MJ to keep the number.
I would caution you against making a commitment to any business based on MJ/YMAX phone service. You may, however, as of 4 months ago, port your MJ number to another more reliable carrier

AT&T requires me to live in a specific suburb of my city to use this area code and number. Do I have any alternatives to AT&T where they are more reliable than MJ, and can guarantee me to keep the number from where I am located (same city, just a few miles away from the AT&T-required location)?

Try http://pbxinaflash.com/vitelity/ to port your number. Costs $15-25 for LNP but you get free incoming and $3.99/mo for DID.

Look at http://www.dslreports.com/forum/voip to get an idea of other reputable service providers where you can port your number.
