Import Outlook, Gmail and CSV Contacts into MagicJack

Post by ViDdAs »

I've just completed a free (yes donations accepted) utility to import your existing contacts from Outlook, Gmail's export format and a specially formatted CSV file into you MagicJack contacts.

http://sites.google.com/site/importcont ... magicjack/

All the necessary instructions are posted on the site.

Happy importing

Free from Viruses, spyware, and malware

Post by ViDdAs »

Any feedback is greatly appreciated.

One user suggested that I upload the software to CNET Download.com so that other users can have the peace of mind of knowing that it's clean and safe from viruses, spyware, and malware.
Thanks Bill

Here's the download link from CNET Download.com http://download.cnet.com/MagicJack-Cont ... tag=button

I'll be anxious to check this out soon. However, I don't have the time at the moment. I'm supposed to be going to work!

Thanks for your work on this, though!

I had a little trouble importing the CSV file from Google Voice so I did an import into MS Outlook and used it instead. (Let me know if that's not real clear.)

Don't know if the work around was necessary, but it worked like a charm and now I have my contacts in my MJ and I don't have to worry about the disappearing on me, like they have in the past.

Thank you. Nice work.

I don't have Google Voice to test the import from that format, I'm assuming it is different from the Google Mail format.

Could you email me a sample of the format from Google Voice?

Certainly... I have to run at the moment, but I'll send you a PM a little later in the day.

EDIT: With much thanks to ViDdAs, his app to import contacts from Google Voice worked successfully without having to first import into MS Outlook. Not sure why I couldn't make it work at first but this is a nifty app for those who find it useful to have your GV contacts on your MJ.

Can not get this to work with Windows 7. The application can not see any files on the desktop or anywhere. Something wrong with it.

What was changed? MagicJack? Windows 7? No AddressBook.xml

Post by vkelman »

Hello! I'm not a novice computer user, I'm a software /web developer (.NET) with a long experience. However, I'm completely puzzled with this.

I installed your MagicJack Contact Importer on Win 7 64 bit machine on which MagicJack itself is running. (Note that I didn't do anything fancy with MagicJack, like making it to run as a service etc.) When I started Contact Importer, it couldn't find AddressBook.xml file, so I started to search for it manually. And I couldn't find such a file on my machine!
To be sure contacts exist I added one fake contact to magicJack. It didn't make any difference.
Then I tried to use MagicJack help and found one advice on a question "How can I backup my magicJack Contacts list in before reformatting":

Go to "Start"
Go to "My Computer"
In the Menu bar on top, Go to "Tools"
Go to In "Folder Options"
Got to "View" Tab
Under "Hidden files and folders".
Click on "Show hidden files and folders"
Click "Apply"
Click "OK"
Open the drive named "Phone" or "Vista Only".
Open the folder called "magicjack"
Copy the file named "Addressbook.xml"

I did more then was suggested, making not only hidden files and folders but also system files and folders visible. No luck. AddressBook.xml is not present on my Win 7 machine. There is no such thing as 'the drive named "Phone" or "Vista Only"' either.

Did they change something in MagicJack, so that contacts are no longer kept in a local AddressBook.xml file?

Along the line I opened Control Panel => Programs and realized that MagicJack is not listed among installed programs. I opened Services just to find that MagicJack is not a service either. So, what is it? And, in case I wont to uninstall it, how to do that? It's not a program, it's not a service, what is it? A ghost?

Thanks

I would appear that MagicJack made a change to their storing of the contact list.

What you could try is to downgrade the last update using the link below.
Setup one contact using MagicJack so it can create the AddressBook.xml file, then run the importer again.
You can then update the the MagicJack again if you wish.

Let me know how it goes

No luck.

I ran downgrade utility. It disconnected MagicJack, forced me to sign in again, connected MagicJack back. It looked the same, so I'm not sure if it was downgraded at all (during process of presumably downgrading it displayed a message saying something like "upgrading, likely you". I didn't find a way to see a version of MagicJack currently running.

When that presumably downgraded MagicJack soft-phone was starting it promptly displayed a message "downloading contacts" and then my test contacts I entered previously appeared. So, it looks like it stores contacts remotely (or maybe on a device itself?), not on computer's hard drive.
No AddressBook.xml file exists.

How am I supposed to upgrade MagicJack back? Using Menu => Advanced users => Run magicFix? I tried to do so, but it just opened MagicJack site in a browser.

I guess there are thousands of MagicJack users around. Is it like no one even bothered to import contacts in it? No one demanded such capability from MagicJack company?

No, no difference. No hidden MagicJack drive, no AddressBook.xml anywhere in MyComputer, no visual difference after running Downgrade utility...

I'm using Windows XP and am having the same problem. I tried to downgrade, but still can't find the file to import contacts.

They for sure changed something radically, most likely - switched to keeping contacts either in MagicJack device or online :(
Again, I'm totally surprised there is no public outcry about it. In my opinion, every computer-literate MagicJack user should want to synchronize MagicJack contacts with Gmail, Yahoo, Outlook...

You are correct. Contacts are now all uploaded onto magicJack's servers and are no longer stored locally.

The magicJack dialer has no contact import function. The tool you were using provided a pretty good creative solution by modifying/overwriting the locally stored address book data file. Unfortunately, that data file is no longer used by the magicJack dialer.

As it stands now, if you decide to manually enter your contacts and anything goes wrong, there is no backup whatsoever. You have to re-enter all your contacts all over again by hand.

@redpepper,
Do you think there is any way to influence magicJack staff, to point their attention on the need of contacts import/export?

As Android fan, I'm kind of waiting for Motorola HS1001 cordless Android phone. It will allow to use Google contacts, among other features. So, I'll forget about softphone.

I took a look at the article and that's a pretty cool cordless phone. At $150+ you must really love Android technology.

In regards to magicJack, I don't have any suggestions but if look through the forum you will find that people have been asking for a number of features including the ability to import contacts for a long time. I have kind of given up on them for anything above basic dialtone delivery and low pricing.

On a slightly different subject, we were directly approached by a number of customers and forum members to come up with a solution (after the magicJack upgrade that moved all the contacts offline onto their servers). The main theme of the requests was for a reliable solution that would support importing contacts, multiple phone numbers per contact (mobile, business, home) and full local information storage to ensure privacy and allow backup. The end product that meets those criteria has been under development for a little while now and is very close to being released.

Sorry for the delay in getting back to you.

MagicJack did make a significant chance to the software and you are no longer able to use this utility. I was on a chat with them and they told me it was for my protection in case i format the MagicJack and loose all my contacts. That's why they now store them on their servers. I did ask if they have any plan to implement a import feature and of course the support staff didn't know but hopefully they might mention it to someone as a feature request.

Someone said there was a surprising lack of "public outcry" about this: I think everyone else is crying out the same way I am, by never using Magic Jack again. They are basically done. Call quality is sh_tty, I can no longer use a regular phone with the adapter, and I can't import and export contacts. This is a useless service now. What Nazi's!

It pisses me off when someone legally holds on to a really good idea and refuses to develop it, but also refuses to let anyone else bring it up to the quality it deserves.
