My callers can hear me, but I can't hear them

Post by m411 »

I set up MagicJack this week and it worked for the first few days. Now when I make a phone call, the person I'm calling can hear me talking, but I can't hear them.

Hello m411, welcome to the forum!

You might bookmark this link http://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/MagicJack. A user of this forum gathered many of the best available fixes into a comprehensive one-stop location for all things MJ. There is some great info on there. Also, check out the "Search" feature for this forum. Many MJ issues are indeed common issues and have been discussed at length, including fixes.

Question: did you receive the confirmation email from MJ after registering it and click the link in it to verify your email? MJ will quit working after 24 hours or so if this step is overlooked (yes, it happend to me, silly junk email filters  )

Some things to try:

- Do not use the short USB cable that came with MJ as it causes lots of issues. Make sure the MJ is plugged into a USB 2.0 port on the back of your computer.

- Go into your MJ's softphone display. Make sure the upper left corner indicates "Normal (High-Speed)". Then locate the following settings in upper right corner of your softphone: "Menu" then "Volume/Headset Control…" . Make sure the "Choose your Device" is set to telephone. If so, the next (3) choices "Speaker/Earpiece: Microphone: and Ringing should indicate "magicjack". If you are using Headset/other, a version of digital audio will be indicated. Below this you can adjust the "Speaker" and "Microphone" levels via the sliders on the bottom (you might adjust only a little each time, then see if voice improves). Please note that if these setting are too high you will experience "echo".

- Try setting the magicjack.exe process to a higher priority in Windows "Control Panel". To do this press (Ctrl+Alt+Del), then locate the "Process" tab. Look for the "magicjack.exe" process. Then right click on it, and "Set Priority" to "High" and "Yes" to confirm. This allows magicjack more access to your computers resources. Please note that this will need to be done each time your restart your computer. Others on this site recommended a program called "Prio" which will automatically do this once it is setup. (available as a free download for personal use). It can be found here http://www.prnwatch.com/prio.html

- Reduce the number of programs you have running on your computer while trying to use the MJ.

- Make sure you have run "Windows Update" and have all the latest and greatest updates for your system.

- Consider purchasing a powered USB hub. This would then be plugged into a USB 2.0 port on the back of your computer and the MJ into it. This resolves power issues with the MJ (most computer power supplies are underpowered and/or over taxed).

Hopefully these suggestions can get your phone working in good order. Good luck to you and please keep us posted of your progress.
