Cheapest Wi-fi phone + magicjack suggestion.

Post by PCTECH4747 »

I could get a free old used blackberry 8800 Bold. Not unlocked and not sure if it has a sim in it or not.

My want is this. To be able to put a wifi phone in my pocket and be able to use it to send and recieve calls at any wi-fi free hotspot.

Carrying my laptop looks stupid to me and clunky. I know there should be a way to do this.

I dont want to buy cell phone service at all, or a data plan. just use my magicjack credentials hacked onto a wi-fi handheld portable phone that will be able to be used in free hotspots. Sorry but im not rich.

willing to spend 100 bucks on the phone.

What do i need to do if its possible?

You don't have to be rich to have a mobile phone.
There are virgin mobile and boost mobile which both have VERY affordable plans.
I am a college student and make $200 a month (sometimes not even that! my parents pay for tuition and books, the rest is on me) & I am dumping at&t once my contract is up because there are way better alternatives now.
I wouldn't recommend using a wifi phone and wifi connections as your primary phone.

I have high speed internet. im tapped out of money. i just can afford magicjack and my internet. while im at home i would use the wifi phone anyway because i could if it would work. I asked if there was a solution, not someone to tell me to go out and get a cell phone service. I am not that important to have to have 100 percent reliable service. Will the blackberry work or not? what ip phone could i put magicjack sip credentials into without purchasing cell phone service and or data plan. I just want to use wifi to connect with the WIFI PHONE. i have 2 landline phones that i can use with my computers if i really have to.

Although I have not tried one of these yet they look like an attractive option which may do what you want. http://cgi.ebay.com/Uniden-UIP1868-5-8G ... 35aa89f0ae.

Edit: I reread your post I thought you were looking for wifi at home on first read.

There's no reason for the Blackberry not to work as long as you have the software for it. You'll need something like SIPDroid (Android) or Siphon (iPhone) but made for Blackberry.
Most likely you also have to jailbreak/root the unit and probably find a OS that is open.
You can ckeck out

they might have something.
Good Luck,

I have a few practically unused devices up for grab, contact me if interested:
2 units Linksys WIP330
Linksys WIP310
SMC WSKP100 - hacked to work w. MJ
But in order to make them work you need MJMD5 running on ATA or computer and connect to your network thru wireless connection, or have the MJ device connected to your computer.

If your MJ is one of those that needs mjproxy running on your pc so you can use the service with an ata device, then it may not be possible to use your MJ service on wifi phone at a hotspot away from your home.

Have you verified that you can connect your MJ to an ata device and make calls WITHOUT needing to install anything extra on your pc? I'd check that first if I were you.

Has anyone tried putting an mjproxy IP address in an ata device that is not part of the local network? Would that work assuming the address and port were correct and the firewall was configured to allow incoming connections to that port?

yes it works, i do it all the time; i have mjproxy running on my router; use noip.com for my ddns. on my softphone away from my own network i list my ddns alias:5070 and it works fine. through iptables in the router i open 5070 and thats it. the same would on any mobile device that you can get an sip application on.

What is the firmware you are using on your router. I have DDWRT and i cant get the remote connection using noip.com working. Appreciate if you can share some more info.

i am using tomato on an asus rt-n12, but i don't think it is a firmware issue; if the proxy works inside the network; it will work outside. make sure your firewall script is opening up port 5070. not the port forwarding section.

to test just telnet in and issue the command manually and then test it on the outside. make sure your ddns is working or simply address it from the outside using your wan ip from your isp.

command would be:

iptables -I INPUT -p tcp --dport 5070 -j ACCEPT
iptables -I INPUT -p udp --dport 5070 -j ACCEPT

each line separate, and case sensitive. on ddwrt i think after awhile it will undo it, when it reloads the firewall scripts; so it is best to just add it to the firewall script; but this is enough to verify that it will work
