New to MJ - my first post
I've been reading reviews and this forum for a while and decided to give it a shot. I was expecting the worst. To my surprise, everything works. I know it's only been one day, but it's doing everything as advertised.
Here are a few questions. I hope this is the right section to ask:
1. Windows XP. I know the PC need to be on 24/7. What about the power saving functions? Can I turn the Hard Disk off? I assume it will not work in Sleep mode or Hiberation. I don't want to mess with it too much because I'm just happy I got success.
2. I noticed I can't close MJ on my desktop. I can minimize it, it then goes to the task bar. From there, I right click to closed it. Again, not that I want to close it, but would like to know HOW I can do it if I need to.
3. Now that my computer is on 24/7, are there any safety precautions I need to set up? All my files are on the PC. I do have an anti-virus program. Keep in mind I'm not a computer guy.
4. I choose not to buy another year during the set up process for $19.99 (was not sure if MJ was going to work). Does anyone know what the price will be once my initial year is up?
5. I read that one can port their number to MJ soon. I also read that they been saying that for a while. Now they have a date Aug 10. At a fee. Any guess how much that would be? What do you think? Like $10 or like $50? I'm asking because I'm keeping my current land line only for this purpose - to keep my number. I don't want to loose this home number that I'm known by. But if it's going to be expensive like $50, I don't think that's worth it.
6. Many have said MJ is good if you don't use the phone a lot. What happens if you do? Let's say I want to talk for 2 hrs straight. I've done several test calls for a few minutes (and all is fine). Just asking if quality goes down or something if I talk too long. Just wondering why people say MJ is good if one DON'T use the phone that often.
Much Thanks!!!!
P.S. excuse my spelling and grammer. I'm a bit excited about MJ now.

Might have an answer or two but am newbie myself.
I understand the newer MJ's don't have the 'disconnect' feature common to USB plugins. I just unplug mine and no problem in over 7 months.
Call duration I don't think is a problem. The problem for some is that if you make over 50 in a day, they will disconnect you - as stated in their TOS (Terms of Service).
I use my MJ mostly on my Laptop which uses on 30 watts per hour. That's 10 cents a day for me if on 24 hours. However I shut down computer at night and unplug MJ. Calls either go to Voicemail or are forwarded to my cellphone - according to how I want to handle it.
My MJ has given no problems and sounds better than my land line. I also hope to Port my land line # to MagicJack next month - but not holding my breath

1. If you don't want your PC on all the time, read up on thin clients. Low cost, low power, low maintenance and easy.
2. The pop-up window can be suppressed. Try this - http://tools.pcphonesoft.com/
3. You are fine with anti-virus and a firewall. But again, a thin client that was write protection makes these worries irrelevant.
Can't add much to your other questions.

Matter of fact, I didn't wait until the 'porting' becomes available. Canceled land line this AM. Figured MJ has been flawless for 7 months and if I changed numbers may throw a monkey wrench into the works...so emailed and phoned contacts over the weekend and said land line no longer available - to use my 'Happy Jack' number with cell as backup.

Downgrade your telco service to the bare minimum. You may be waiting a while for porting into MJYipMan_Style wrote:Here I go, paying a month of phone bill waiting for the port. I want to start "saving" $ now.

My wife was playing some game on Facebook. And my MJ sounded like crap. She could not hear from MJ at home. It stayed like that even after everyone got off the internet.
Delete all temp internet files, cookies, etc. Restart. MJ now works like a champ.
Question> Is MJ more sensitive with other computer uses? I did some web surfing, and email, etc. And MJ seems fine with that.
