Contacts not available..

This is the second time this is happening. Im guessing the calls list/contacts are still being hosted on mj server? This is very annoying. Has anyone figured out a way to place the contacts back in the mj device?

I had the same issue this morning. I did a tech support chat with them and was told they are having tech problems and I will be sent an email within 24 hours concerning the issue.

disappearing contacts list

Post by emsai »

MJ frequently wipes out my contacts list. When I use their chat support with "Ashley" or "Brittany" or "Jordon" or "Keith" I get some Bangalorean reading from a script that winds up messing up my internet security configurations, my server addresses, deleting upgrades, downloading downgrades (yes, I said downgrades), and a few other seemingly unrelated actions that solve nothing. I am then escalated to a senior technician who proceeds to further fu my system, and solves nothing. He then tells me it will be solved by their engineers, who send me an email solution. bye bye.

All of this to fix a frequently disappearing contacts list.

THIS IS PITIFUL TECHNICAL CUSTOMER SERVICE.

Other problems I have had include dropped calls, music on the line, reboots to get the system working again. I am really POed at PC Magazine for giving this %^#$ their Editor's Choice. Unfortunately, I am stuck for 5 years with this unreliable, poorly supported, overly advertised system..

No contact list after magicjack maintenance

Post by pixelpadre »

Yesterday my.magicjack.com was down for maintenance, at least that was the message that popped up all day yesterday.

Now this morning.......no contacts.

I wanted to change call forwarding and I had no way to do it. Not even from my voicemail menu.

You CAN change your call forwarding, there is just a new way of doing it it seems. Go to www.my.magicjack.com log in then click on the MY SUBSCRIPTIONS tab. The call forwarding setting is now there.

yeah, I pulled MJ from USB and restarted, nothing! Then I decided to look here before trying anything else. After seeing this new thread, figured nothing to do but wait.

Dang, I hope they get it restored! I've been meaning to make a hand written copy for emergencies. But decided to wait. Moving in a week so I would loose/misplace it anyway.
Well I guess this teaches me a lesson on procrastination.

Naturally the written copy I made a few months back....... is in Fla. ( ok Joe, go ahead & laugh now)

I too have lost all my contacts. I am curious as it seems there was a "LUCKY YOU" update yesterday. I DID NOT get said update. I wonder if all the people here who have lost their contacts did or did not get the lucky you update?? If not then maybe when the server we are on gets that update our contacts will be restored..

And yes Joy, I did chuckle :) Albeit just a SMALL one :)

I've generally been pretty happy with MagicJack since I purchased it, even with the frequent problems (I hate that I have to unplug/replug the device after most reboots).

But losing my contacts is saddest of all. I sure hope they get this fixed!

I also noticed that I no longer see the MagicJack virtual drives listed under My Computer - could this be part of the problem? I know the phone works - I just made a call.

Happy to have found this forum, and will be lurking here often!

I got no notice of an update. Was only aware of it from this forum. However I lost my contacts as well. Also some mention the softphone being different with no 'favorites' anymore and something to do with Menu. However my softphone never changed.
Glad it was mentioned here or I'd still being pulling my hair trying to find out what was wrong with my MJ.

If it turns out the people who have lost their contacts have NOT received the LUCKY YOU update it is probably an incompatablity with MJ's new database ( they updated it yesterday). HOPEFULLY when we get the lucky you update our contacts will be back, hopefully..

So please chime in, lost contacts?? Get the update, yes or no??

Lost my contacts too. No update that I'm aware of. I did download the plug-in for Outlook. Tried it, but it didn't work. Maybe I just haven't configured it properly, or Outlook is just being Outlook (which I hate.)

Damn that sucks. I was going to do the same but decided to hold off, I am glad I did. I will wait until I do get the lucky you update and things settle down. When I do make a new list I will only add a few names at first to see what happens.

EDIT: I just added one name to my address book and stopped then restarted my MJ, guess what? It was gone after the restart.. I am still holding out hope until I get the LUCKY YOU update.

Sucks for sure. Now get this. I just manually did the lucky you update, tooka LONG time to install, big update. After it installed, NO CONTACTS. So then I added 2 manually. Restarted MJ and the 2 contacts I added were GONE.. Looks like a BUMPY road ahead....

Or because I "forced" the update my server wasn't ready for it yet. Thankfully I made an image first so all is back to the way it was, but still no contacts.
I found a yr old copy of my addressbook.xml and I can open it in notepad and see some of my lost contacts. So when things finally settle down I will rebuild it, but I have lost a yrs worth of contacts, including yours. Thankfully I added it to my phone.

One of my PCs got the update, and the contacts are back. My daily PC hasn't gotten the "Lucky You" yet, and the contacts are still gone. I won't force the update - just wait for it to happen "naturally"....

Yeah that is what I am hoping for it to work when I get the update "naturally" This is why I love imaging programs. My OS is back to the way it was before I forced the update. I HAD to try and see what would happen.
I have my fingers crossed when I do get the update on it's own, all will be back to normal, whatever that is as one can never tell with MJ :)

One can ONLY hope after we get the update pushed out to us our contacts come back. BUT I have a feeling this will not be the case after trying the update myself ( manually) and my contacts did not return. So we shall see.

Charlie: Hello, how may I help you?

Bob: Hi, I need help in getting my backup addressbook back into mj. I have : 1. Done the 12+ meg upgrade 2. Individually deleted MJ from my devise manager, all 3 elements 3. In reloading MJ after that the new layout did come up. Still no contacts. I also now have 2 drives for MJ. My unit identifies them as Drive F and Drive G. 4. And here the fun begins. I was directed to download mjremover.exe which I did. That was the last command given as the chat ceased to function. I could not send or receive. Sat there for about a final 5 minutes watching 'operator is typing a message' before I signed off. 6. Rebooted my machine and MJ did not auto start which gave me access to both F and G drives. I found the Addressbook.xml file and tried to replace it in two places. Neither replacement has brought back my contacts. 7. MJ at this point does work giving me ability to make and receive calls.

Post by wired one »

so like the other day i lost my contacts, called? i think and they said they were working on their servers and all would be good in a while. so i started unplugging and replugging my mj every once in a while to see if the contacts came back.

used to be when i first got my mj when i plugged it in a drive would show, and i could browse it. but it quit doing that a few updates ago, now its hidden.

so during the first contact loss plug fest something happened unexpected on a couple of plugs. the drive opened up and stayed open. and it occurred to me how screwed i would be if i lost all the numbers i have in it, so i copied said contents to a folder and backed that up somewhere else as well.

now flash forward to 8/20 and yea, no upgrade and lost contacts here too.

man am i glad i backed dat chit up. i can open the address book file and all the numbers are there, so i will repopulate my contacts from that. but talk about a screw up on their end, this is major.

i feel sorry for all those who did not or were not able to back up their contact list.

peace

wired one

edit:... ya know since i had to do my contacts again from the old address file, i went ahead and went old school and made a txt file with all the phone numbers in it. now it can dump all it wants too, cause I'm backing phone numbers up form now on.

I have the same problem with lost Contacts. I do remember getting a "luck you " upgrade a day or so before the 20th. After some time the tech realizing I did not have the same softphone he was taking about and had me down load an upgrade. The new interface has "menu" on the left side and no Favorites. Under "menu" it says MagicJack 2.0.1. Eventually said I would get an email within 24 hours which has passed. Another thing I noticed is this upgrade disable my monitor going into standby. So now I have to turn it off when I am going to away for any length of time. I turn my puter off at night. Anyone who needs to call calls the cell. I haven't tried any adding of contact. I hope they don't go away after turning puter off. What a FU mess.

I think you are confusing some OBSERVATIONS with complaining.
Sure SOME will complain over a dot being in the wrong place, but us old timers here will make mention when things are not running correctly. There IS a difference....

No Joy here Tom, still no update and still no contacts....I also tried the restart even though I have 2 icons I made on my desktop to kill and start my MJ. Again, no joy.

If they had not started keeping OUR contacts on THEIR server, it would not be so big a deal since it was OUR responsibilty to back them up, sadly that has not been the case since about March this yr.

Wow I better stop now as someone might think I am complaining :)

I have to apologize but there is a twisted part of me that sees an amusing irony in MJ losing all the contacts in the most recent "Lucky You" upgrade.

Especially when it wasn't that long ago that the last "Lucky You" upgrade stored all the contacts and calls on the MJ servers so their customers wouldn't accidentally lose them.

Looks like while I was posting my message, tsmith had the same thought. I sure wish folks would quit trying to protect me from myself. I'm perfectly capable of messing things up enough by myself without help from outsiders.

and I would find humor in it if I had been prepared and had made a backup list. But w/ 2 cross country moves this year and about to make a 3rd one this week. I've been busy. Not to mention my eyesight is bad. So once I typed in the contacts, there they stayed.

SO, What "lucky you" upgrade are we looking for? The chat I had Friday had me download 2.0.5546.3878 and I saved it and then ran it.

I think that was me responding to Tom, but yes you are correct and from now on I will let MJ know you will mess up on your own :)

Yes you got it. You MANUALLY d/l'd and installed the "lucky you" update that was pushed through for others, but not everyone. I will wait till they have the bugs worked out ( HA!!) till I try it myself. Though I already did on Friday when all this crap happened and reverted back to the orig one, sadly sans contact list.

I THINK the rule of thumb is 4 moves and your contact list will be safe, I am just guessing :)
Sorry to make light and since I know how bad things are for you right now this was the last thing you needed.. When you finally get settled shoot me off an email with your new #, or since it is MJ I assume it will be the same? Damn if I ONLY had a way to write it down with some sort or writing device and not store it on my non existent contact list :).. Oh well.

I intend to keep the same MJ Fla #! I wrote your #'s down this time. I'm making a written list as I add this time. Just hope I dont loose it in the move.
