Upgrade keeps reinstalling after every reboot - SOLVED!
After the upgrade tonight, I restarted my PC. As soon as the MJ splash screen appeared, the Windows Installer "Preparing to install" comes up behind it and starts to re-install the upgrade, even though it was already done.
I let the re-installation complete, rebooted the PC, and again, once the MJ splash screen appeared, the Windows Installer started again and goes through the process as if it had never done it before.
I pulled the dongle before I powered on the PC, and, of course, the Windows Installer never showed up. Only when I plugged the dongle back in did the installer start. This is driving me nuts. The message box keeps reappearing in the middle of my typing, surfing the web, etc. Is anyone else having this problem?
Now, I don't know if this matters or not, but I noticed in the softphone's menu that it says "unregistered" at the bottom of the menu list, and it's grayed out. Does this appear the same way in your menu? A message does appear in the softphone about being taken to a registration page shortly, but I'm never taken to it. Could this be the problem?

I think they are using reverse logic when it comes to the unregistered. Had it been not grayed out it would mean your MJ is NOT registered. Since it is grayed out it means it is.. DUMB, but hey what can you expect from MJ. You want things to make sense?Megamixer56 wrote:@TSmith - I haven't experienced your problem with the re-installing. The "unregistered" also shows up in my Menu options right under the magicjack software version and it's grayed out.

Gotcha. Thanks guys. Joe, this is actually the same problem I had when I manually ran the upgrade a few days ago. It's in another thread. It's as if it's caught in a "causal loop" (too much Star Trek in the past, eh?). I had thought of removing it, and I think it's a good idea Joe.
One thing's for sure, I'm not contacting MJ Support about this. They'd have me reformat the HD....

That was a good TNG episode. I think Kelsey Grammer was the other captain stuck in the loop. YES I can admit I am a geek but I would NEVER ever wear Spock ears!! I am not THAT bad...tsmith wrote:Gotcha. Thanks guys. Joe, this is actually the same problem I had when I manually ran the upgrade a few days ago. It's in another thread. Might be some program you have installed conflicting with the MJ install.

I wonder. I'm running Google Desktop, but everything else is pretty much disabled outside of necessary Windows processes.
I ran the removal, cleaned out the Registry, then plugged the dongle in. Got the download message, then I get "Unable to connect to the internet, click here to run Magicfix...". So I clicked on it, which opened IE, but the "Connecting..." is frozen. It never does connect. I opened another tab to see if I can access another site, which I can, so my Internet connection is there.
I then disabled the Windows firewall (just barely began using that one after deleting another firewall that decided it didn't want to work any more), but it didn't help with the connection problem. I'll keep playing with it.
Heh, I never wore the ears either Joe. That was a good show.

I had the "unable to connect to the internet, click to run Magic Fix" problem when I tried to move my MJ to a different computer, a few weeks ago.
My internet was down, so I was going to move the MJ to a laptop connected to the neighbor's wifi (with his permission).
I tried two different laptops, but I kept getting the same problem. One of the laptops even had the MJ connected to it a year ago, with no problems.
Strange.
I know your issue is a bit different, because you're using the same computer. However, I wonder if MJ is trying to stem the aftermarket resale of MJ units by "marrying" them to a computer.
Anyone else having that problem?

I decided to check the Event Viewer to see what was being entered during this blasted recurring installation. Plenty! Errors all over about not finding the WISPHidden feature. Couldn't find the WISPFiles feature either. Ah!
"Wisptis.exe (\Windows\System32) This executable runs as a system
service that provides pen-data collection for other components of the
SDK. When a component needs to interact with the pen (for example, to
collect ink or to detect gestures), this executable is spawned as a
service to communicate directly with the input device. On a Tablet PC,
Wisptis.exe interacts with the digitizer, whereas on a desktop it
interacts with the mouse as well. The executable’s name is an acronym
that references an outdated internal name for the team that developed it
(Windows Ink Services Platform Tablet Input Subsystem)."
After a good amount of searching the 'net, I found an old forum (2004) that discussed problems with Windows Install and WISPTIS.EXE. Apparently these Tablet processes came in with versions of Microsoft Office (and sometimes other programs), and the fact that when a version of Office is not de-installed completely, it can leave remnants of the WISP* stuff that needs to be deleted out of the Registry manually.
I had deleted most of the temporary Office 2003 a long time ago, but it was still listed in the Add/Remove in Control Panel. So I deleted it, but still had the recurring Windows Installation pop up with a reboot. I dug further and found the info on deleting many individual keys in the Registry that related to the Tablet. In case anyone may need this in the future, here's the info (I created a Restore Point first):

Yup, spent the next 30 minutes or so deleting every one of these puppies. And I'm relieved to say my PC reboots without that blasted installer running once my softphone comes up. Whoopee!
Apparently the new MJ calls Tablet procedures now and if your system hasn't deleted Office (or another software) completely, you could be in for some fun.
Thanks for all your help and suggestions guys. What a PITA this was.
