Other person can't hear me on an incoming call

Post by pbjandfritos »

Hello,

I have been a Magic Jack user for over eleven months with no big problems. However, today I am having a major problem with my Magic Jack. When someone calls me, they say that they have a lot of trouble hearing me. I can hear them just fine. My friend says that the sound is like a bad cell phone connection. Magic Jack is installed on a Compact computer running Windows XP home SP 3. I have tried uninstalling the magic Jack from device manager, running the upgrade, setting the priority to high in task manager, uninstalling magic jack, and plugging it back in again. I am wondering if anybody in the 734-855-xxxx area is having any trouble as well? When I make an outgoing call, Magic Jack works just fine. Any help would be appretiated.

Hey Ernie, join the club...

My hopeless thread -> http://www.phoneservicesupport.com/phon ... t9545.html

Have you tried using the software with headset only to eliminate that your phone or phone lines are not at fault? To insure that is not the issue, unplug the phone line and use the head set software to make a call. If you don't have a headset, all you need is any microphone to test the system.

Mine started as static and has gone dead on the outgoing end. Sounds like you and I could be in the same boat.

I am wondering since you and I both are XP SP3 and both 11 month old users.... this could mean something. Maybe the last upgrade did something to ours? I will plug into my wife's Vista laptop to check it out.

UPDATE: Yes, just checked that out and the phone dongle still worked in my wife's Vista. The new upgrade is XP unfriendly.

Hello Xkahn,

Thanks for replying! I am glad that I am not the only one who is having this problem. Today I have tried system restore, and nothing happened. I had the upgrade since Friday, and it was working fine for a few days. This problem started happening yesterday. I have found a sollution to the softphone however. When you get an incoming call, you can press the flash button twice and then the person can hear me. I tried this using my cell phone. It has to be a bug in Magic Jack. I should try it with my Laptop running Windows 7. When making an outgoing call using the telephone, people can hear me with no problems. I had a similar issue in February where a person couldn't hear me on an incoming call after about 30 to 40 seconds, but it was fixed. I can try the headset, but the latest version of the softphone is not accessible for blind people. I use a screan reader to read me what is on the screan. Let me know if that sollution works for you.

Ok Ernie, I am back and found the problem. When the Upgrade took effect on my machine, it muted the volume control to the mic on the TigerJet device. Here is how to check that;

Open Control Panel,,
Open Sounds Speech Audio Devices,,
Open Sound and Audio Devices,,
Open Audio Tab at top,,
Under sound recording default device,,
Select USB Internet Phone,,
Push the volume button,,
Uncheck Mute and push the slider to the top.

I was going to post screen shots of this, so I hope I made my text clear enough for your reader instead. Have a better one.

I tried that, and it did not work. I also had someone call me using the headset, and they still had problems hearing me. It sounds like a bad cellphone connection. In order to get it to work, I have to press the flash button twice.

How is the upload speed on your service? I normally run 2.5 MBps upload, after all that is where the outgoing packets of your voice is sent. Fortunately I have the use of several cell phones to test my lag time. Even at 2.5 you get about 500ms delay. I hate to blame the ISP or faulty equipment but check your phones too. I remember back in the day of 2400 baud modems a poor telephone wire could prove fatal.

When my trouble first started I stripped it down to only one test phone a like new cord, the shortest I could find. When I plugged into my wife's Vista laptop I realized I was dealing with software and not hardware. Do you have another PC to test it on even take it to a friends house? If you do that don't forget to blow that mjusbsp folder off before you go or they could get ticked off at you.

By then you will know if it is a hardware or software issue. I tend to think software because of the recent upgrade but it might be just a coincidence.

Hello Xkahn,
I also have an upload speed of about 2mbps. I know the phone is not the problem. I tried using the headset. When my friend called me, and he said that I was all broken up. I have a panasonic cordless handset with two phones, and the base station is plugged directly into the Magic Jack. When I make an outgoing call, people can hear me with no problems. Also on Last Friday, when I got another call on the line, Magic Jack hung up on my friend with in 40 seconds. I might need to format the MJ. What drive do I format? There are two Magic Jack drives that say Magic Jack. One has autorun files, and one has a file called don't use this drive. i might try removing it from device maniger again and removing the mbjusts folder. I might restore it back to Last Thursday, the day before I got the upgrade. Update: Tride restoring, creating a new user account, and it didn't work. Must be the software. Hope they fix this soon.
Thanks for trying to help.

The two drives are really just the USB dongle and are read only. There is no way to change this. But to uninstall the programs; they are inside a hidden folder on your C drive.

First open My Computer, at the top click Tools, Folder Options, click the View tab, then the radio check box "Show hidden files and folders". After you apply this setting open the C drive.

The the following folders, Documents and Settings, the account name, I am guessing Ernie, Application Data, then find MJUSBSP, and delete it. This will remove MagicJack. Once you plug the USB dongle back in the autorun will take effect and upgrade the system.

Other than that there is no formatting the dongle itself. It just downloads and installs the upgrade software.

I tried that, and that didn't work. I assume it is the software, because the same problem happens when I am using the headset. I just have to live with this problem until the next update is released.

There are many people having this problem. It is not your computer software. I have win vista with 64 bits and every few weeks there is an issue... Just live with it with MJ crap.

I tried to uninstall the MJ software and download the new one. It still have problem. It is more like random issue since some calls can go for 20 mins without an issue and some calls just take after few seconds.

Issue fixed! My Netgear router needed to be resetted because the wireless whent down yesterday. There was also another MJ upgrade that was released yesterday. However there is a major bug. When you are on an outgoing call, and you press the flash button twice to go back to the line, I can hear the other person, but they can't hear me. If you press the flash button, it hangs up on the person. This issue doesn't occur on an incoming call. the sollution is to call the person back. Is anyone experiencing this issue since yesterday's upgrade on Windows XPSP3?

I had been experiencing the problem described by pbjandfritos in the initial post, too. About 4 weeks ago I followed the advice given by Xkahn in his August 24 posting. It worked perfectly! Thanks to Xkahn.

Try this

Post by overbyte »

I had same problem -- I hear the other person, but the person can't hear me. This just started since the last MagicJack update. It had been working fine for 2 years. I found that there's a "Volume/Headset Control" on the MagicJack menu. My control was set for "Headset/Other" but I don't have any headset or other microphone plugged in. I changed the setting to "MagicJack", and now the microphone box says "MagicJack", not the aux jack or whatever default audio input device had been pre-set.

I think this fixed the problem. At least, when I call my landline phone, I can record a message on my answering machine from my MagicJack phone. Try it.

Setting didn't solve problem.

I still had the same problem. Changing the microphone device in the MagicJack menu didn't solve it. I can be heard when I call into some area codes but not into 312 and 530.

I called the MJ tech support chat. After going through 2 support people, I finally got the advice to restart the MJ from the Advanced menu in the MJ window. That solved the problem, for now anyway. I'll see if it's a permanent fix or if the problem comes back.
