Unlikely the phone is the culprit, unless the cord connecting it to the MJ is defective...Also if they are using the small extension cord which came with the MJ, dont. Plus have then make sure they are using a REAR usb port on the PC.
Do a seacrh of this forum on choppy calls as MANY things can cause it. MOST likely a bad internet connection. Please do a VOIP test to see how their connect is. http://myspeed.visualware.com/index.php

When you say "staticy" do you mean noise on the line or do you mean choppy or intermittent? This could be an internet problem. The start up could be a PC problem - virus infection, usb port problem.

Eliminate the ATT phone (which I gather is a cordless phone) by swapping it with a corded phone and see if anything changes.

Sorry for the typo in the title...

but yea it's connected to a desktop and it's actually hooked up to USB ports on the front of the Dell desktop. Does this make a difference?

I did hook it up for them and I'm sure if the MJ came with this extra cord, then I used it. You advise to remove this?

I don't know about the static. I don't use the phone off hand, I just get the complaints :(

It's highly recommended you move your MJ to one of the USB ports in the back of the PC, for more stable power. You might also consider plugging a powered USB hub to the back of the PC, and plugging the MJ into the hub. Also, remove that lousy little extension USB that came with the MJ. It's been suspected of causing a number of problems for a long time.

Hey guys. I tried to plug the magicjack directly to the back off the computer, but when I go to reboot, my computer doesn't boot up. It starts and then goes to a black screen and doesn't go any further. Once I unplug the mj, it starts up. This happen to anyone before? also. This extension that you're talking about, is it just the thick tan/white phone cord? I have this directly hooked up to the ATT phone, but I cannot remember if that's the cord that came with the mj or if it was my own. any suggestions?

Sounds like you have BOOT FROM USB set to yes in your BIOS. You need to disable that.
The cord we are talking about is about 3 or 4 inches long and is a USB extension cord and does not look like a phone cord at all ( unless you got one weird ass phone). It hooks up to the MJ not the phone.
