Hmm... First you should look around the forum and see waht you can do to make the call quality better...Don't go off posting how it sucks and all when you clearly have not tired....About the 911- did the police show up on your door?robot wrote:not only does the phone service suck....so does the tech support...good luck getting a local are code!!!!!! you have a better chance of winning the lottery!!! i would say well at least i have 30 days to try it out but they charged my card all ready...i have made a complaint to the better business bureau ( https://odr.bbb.org/odrweb/public/GetStarted.aspx ) should have never trusted a infomercial...if it sounds to good to be true run as fast as you can....i see to many people making excuses for crappy service....plus i dialed 911 2 c if they had my address and they said no.....all they could say is that i lived at the 573 are code in witch i live in the 620 are code...another promise by magicscam they cant keep

911 twice for testing? that is ignorant... there should be a non-emergency number you can call in your area for testing.
and depending where you live you might get billed for calling 911 twice just for testing... look at your phone book.
by the way my 911 works like a charm...they have all the info i put in MJ... home address etc;..
if you are so worried about 911, get a landline or cell, voip is not for you.

Dudes a whiner. I don't think and I only hope and pray that he is not a cop as he says. My God man, use your head and figure out this phone before posting junk that makes no sense. My phone works perfect everytime. I used Grand Central for a week until MJ got a local prefix for me. Now it's all good and the audio quality is perfect. I added a broadband booster and it made a big difference. The tech support is there 24-7 and have been more then helpful. They have done one on one email support with me and I have even had one on one contact with the owner.This is a new system and they are working hard to perfect it. If you can get this deal somewhere else, go for it. My calls are perfect and the price is fantastic!

Spend $50 a month for POTS and gloat at how suave your are.
Wow, a true example of the "Mooch factor" kind of like moore's law, : the less you pay for a product then the greater the whine factor is exponentially multiplied .
Wow, I used to spend over $50 a month for POTS from the local telco with a few features, then paid for long distance as well. Most Cell phone plans run at least $44 a month with taxes, and often crappy call quality.
Yet I have used a MagicJack for almost 9 months, I even killed mine, I rebooted during an upgrade ( they sent me a replacement for free)
Outside of jumping through hoops, in order to get free incoming and outgoing calls with GC + Gizmo + an unlocked ATA. As well degrade call quality at times. As well you HAVE NO 911 service with this setup.
For 911 you should return to POTS and get a satellite phone and a Cellphone with GPS in case an Automobile accident takes out a telephone poll, or a backhoe takes a chunk out of a fiber optic bundle, or a meth head steals the copper wire from the telephone poles, or destroys the fiber optic lines thinking that they are copper wire. As well as two tin cans and a string incase a solar flare knocks out all the electrical communication devices. For a failover device for the tin cans and strings : a messenger pigeon.
I am thankful that I can get a years worth of phone service for the price of filling my tank with gas, So what I save a year over the POTS I can fill-up 11 more times, at a time when prices are skyrocketing. If MJ went out of business tomorrow, Anyone in the first 90 days has more than likely gotten their money worth or could dispute with their CC if they pulled a Sunrocket. So $39 or $44 I am not a MJ plant either, I ended up with a MJ because of SR.
People even complain about Google's Free Grand Central service - Free and they itch and moan. I bet they would still complain if Google even paid them to use the free service.

" meth head steals the copper wire from the telephone poles, or destroys the fiber optic lines thinking that they are copper wire. "lol-you must be talking about the Interstate Bridge rip off! Wasn't that nice? Some tweekers set fire to the big electrical cables at night to try to steal the copper wire in them. Two things happened. The wires were controlling the traffic cams and they were shut down and the whole thing was for nothing as the idiot stole fiber optic cable. There's no copper wire on the whole bridge! Now, I'll bet this same guy is coming on here and complaing about paying $1.60 amonth for unlimited calling! Unfriggingbeleivable! (by the way I live in Vancouver, neighbor)
That guy could be a reincarnated "smcinaz". Now, that guy was getting hilarious with his ranting and raving about how MJ sucks.. Maybe this guy is him, with a brand new MJ to gripe about.. Anybody remember that guy.. I'm sure kumar does..It got so that I was looking for his posts cause I couldn't wait for my next gut splitting laugh.. man, that crap was funny... smcinaz, if you're still here.. What ever happened to that .. I miss it, man..Is that you in the beginning of the post? Come on .. Its you , ain't it!!Are you "da Robot"?? If that ain't you, maybe this guy will stick around and bring back the good times.. LET EM ROLL, ROBOT!!!

Re: magicjack is a magic scam
Granted I do not have a phone number in my own area (not even in my state), but using a combination of MJ, GC, and Spoofer 1.1, it has given me and my wife home telephone service and is going to save a lot of money on our cell phone bills. I think magicJack is a GREAT product!robot wrote:not only does the phone service suck....so does the tech support...good luck getting a local are code!!!!!! you have a better chance of winning the lottery!!! i would say well at least i have 30 days to try it out but they charged my card all ready...i have made a complaint to the better business bureau ( https://odr.bbb.org/odrweb/public/GetStarted.aspx ) should have never trusted a infomercial...if it sounds to good to be true run as fast as you can....i see to many people making excuses for crappy service....plus i dialed 911 2 c if they had my address and they said no.....all they could say is that i lived at the 573 are code in witch i live in the 620 are code...another promise by magicscam they cant keep
If you have problems with them, don't come on here and bad mouth them, go to their customer service chat and talk with them in a calm and cool manner there. You have to learn to be a little patience and stop acting like a total moron.
Oh, and according to an email that I received today (Tuesday March 11, 2008) from magicJack founder, Dan Borislow, and from Mike Shippey, saying that phone numbers for Anderson Indiana will be available within 45 to 75 days. That is a 765 area code. So see, a little patience is all that is needed!
ABR-They had no local prefix for me either but said they would soon-I thought "yea right"-just one week later they did! so keep checking the prefix list. Their adding them all the time-And if your having any audio problems and have tried everything to fix it-try the Hawking HBB1 Broadband Booster-it works!

Hey, I'm new here so treat me gently. In reading the original post, I think this guy gave me a speeding ticket once, I don't think there could be two like him! Anyway, I have had my MJ for only two days and have yet to encounter any problem. I think it is great. In time it should get better.
Area code selection may not be great, but you should have known before you signed up. Also, the fact that your card was charged shouldn't be a surprise either. If you decide not to keep it after thirty days and don't get a credit issued, then you can complain. There is a way to check the 911 database to see what address is associated with your phone number, but I don't remember it right now. If it comes to me, I'll post it. Calling 911 to test it is like driving into a brick wall to see if your airbag works...not exactly smart.

So today I went to magicJack website, and noticed this:

what was odd to me is that the counter kept increasing.
I took a look at the HTML source code, and saw this beauty:
For those of you who do not write/read code, this is logic to display the number of visitors today. The problem is, that the number of visitors that magicJack is claiming is based off of the current time, and NOT actually based on the number of visitors.
So, if you change your system a few hours into the future, reload the page... you'll see that number jump tremendously:

So, to me, this seems like a little dishonest way to get people to buy a magicJack... To trick people into thinking that more people came to your site, then really did... Trying to deceive people into making a spur of the moment purchase, just so they can get into the 'free offer'...
Anyone else agree? Disagree?

// how far into today are we?
var now = new Date();
var stoday = (3600*now.getHours() + 60*now.getMinutes() + now.getSeconds()) % 86400;
// count so far today
var count = Math.round( (1000*stoday) / interval);
updateCounter();
var timer = window.setInterval("updateCounter()", interval);

function stopPageCounter() {
window.clearInterval(timer);

Yes, that is rather deceptive.Günter Höhn wrote:So today I went to magicJack website, and noticed this:

It's very sad, really.
But, are you surprised? I mean, since I found out about MJ a few weeks ago, the Web site has been changed about a dozen times to reflect that new "free trial available here only until (date)". The date has changed, and now we're urged to order, due to the "fact" that "only 20,000 MJ's are available for this offer..."
Oh well. Except for the major outtages today, I've enjoyed mine, so far.

minor complaints
I am not trying to take sides. I do see that there is a little bit of a mob or group mentality here. I think the guy was just trying to vent some early frustration. If he is like my Mom, it did take a little ironing out to get hers to work smoothly. My 76 yr old mother would not have known what to do. I do sympathize that the tech support (which is currently off here in so. Ca) is often hard to reach. Can anyone argue about this? The MJ is currently not functioning in CA. This is the second time this has happened without warning. I do think that MJ should be able to warn users about future upgrades, and temporary outages. Otherwise, I am very pleased with the device.
Internet service: Verizon

IMHO, the Javascript counter applet wouldn't be so bad, if the daily total was in the ballpark. However, there is IMO lots of evidence that it's at least a factor of ten too high. If true, and it was done intentionally, then the complaints are valid.curiousgeorge wrote:This MJ forum is starting to be a place for crybabies to vent out.
How many magicJacks are there? Clearly, it can't be any more than the number of numbers that YMAX owns. For example, http://www.telcodata.us/telcodata/compa ... X&state=CA shows that there are about 161,000 in California. I haven't attempted to get a total for the country; a rough guess would be one million. Of course, some of these are for services other than MJ, and some have not yet been allocated to a customer.
How many calls does the system process? If you capture your network traffic with Wireshark, the 183 Progress or 200 OK status message will show a User-Agent: header; at the end is 'CPO' followed by some digits. This counts, modulo 2000, for each call processed by the proxy. Make a call, wait one minute, make another call. The difference is calls per minute on that proxy. At busy times, I see maybe 360 on Nashville. If that's half the total, it adds to about 650,000 calls per day. Assuming an average of 5 per user, there are ~130,000 active MJ users.
How much traffic? Unless compression codecs and/or VAD is already widely deployed, I estimate perhaps 28,000,000 min./mo. If average usage is ~400, that would be only ~70,000 active users.
Any suggestions for improving these estimates are welcome. Real data from an MJ employee would be even more welcome.
Data I've seen from the 2002-2003 timeframe showed average cell phone use to be 490 minutes/month/user and average land line use to be 480 minutes/month/user (1250 minutes/month/household). I would think that the average "active" MagicJack user would be somewhere in the 400-500 minute area. Of course there are probably a lot of MagicJack devices that are not even being used (which would be to the company's advantage). Mine spends most of it's time in a drawer.
You might not like the way he said what he said but there is some truth to part of his rant.
When I originally tried the service the system did have some problems. The sound quality is OK but not great. I have never called customer service. I use it mainly because of the cost savings from using my cell phone all the time. There are still regions where there are no area codes for either (I wanted d 319 on so my parents could call me toll free).
Regarding the 911 problem he was having, that is pretty dependent on where he is. I work at a dispatch center and live in a different center and I put my address in as the dispatch center where I work. I OK'd it with a co-worker to test a 911 call. The call did go to the correct dispatch center (I was amazed). At the time I had a Minneapolis, Minnesota phone number (where my brother lives) and had put in a southern California Address (in the city where I work, which is adjacent to the city where I live) and it went through and connected correctly.
I would love to see Skype get the ease of use that Magicjack does. In my use, Magicjacks' sound quality is not quite as good as Skype.
My recent experiences is that Magicjack has become more stable (not as many outages) but its' sound quality needs to be improved on a bit.

Günter Höhn,
Sort of caught them with their Java down so to speak.
I don't know, but the counter thing doesn't offend me too much. And the fact that you could get the code as easy as it appears you did, they are not very concerned that anyone knows it is just a shill.
As long as they keep providing me with what I purchased and they have, a little carnival huckster stuff ain't so bad.
At least I don't have to listen to some guy YELLING Ka-Boom, Ka-Boom it will clean your silverware, your precious jewels and your baby's behind but wait their is more, if you act right now I'll through in a six month supply (define a six month supply) absolutely free [right after you give him your credit card number and then find out the shipping charges are enough to send the whole mess to Outer Mongolia. Now there is a lot of Hucksterism but again that stuff really works even though you would be hard put to define a six month supply.
PS - in a strictly serious vain, ya it does put them in league with the Carnival side show people, but if you listen to some of the commercials on TV they also pull all kinds of tricks and say things that are just ridiculous even if the product itself is legitimate. And while it is not a phony counter have you ever tried to read the fine print at the bottom of your TV during one of those commercials. You would have to be the worlds fastest reader and have an electron microscope hook up to your TV. I guess beside just rambling, what I am trying to say is MagicJack is not any worse than the rest (so far).

I don't know. It's part of marketing. Companies embelish their product all the time. In this case it will be to our advantage if more people sign up, so I ain't complaining. Also, some have had their cards billed early and mine hasn't been billed at all yet. I've had mine over a month, so it's no big conspiricy to grab the cash and dash. More of another growing pain from a new company. Right now they are doing some upgrades to the system and things are not running real smooth. I have no voicemail but their working on all of that and it will be up again soon. No big deal.
We all just need to relax a little and let Dans crew worry about the system. Hell, I call family members all over the country for a buck fifty a month and love it! I can stay on the line till they get pissed and want to go to sleep but I'm not done talkin cuz it's MJ and it's free baby!! Now I have the time to really tell people what I think of them. No hurry at all. Seriously, this thing is a cheap bonus.
My local phone company got a good laugh at my expense on Monday.
I was downloading all night and when I wake up the internet is off. I check all the lines and everythings good. I see the internet light on the modem is not on. No connection-So, because I have an internet phone I had to go to the store to call my phone company which sells me dsl. Well they thought it was funny when I said I had no phone because the internet was off. They said it was a computer error that shut me off. No reason for it. It seems since I quit Qwest phone service a month ago I have had problems with the stand alone dsl tthey sell me. First it slowed way down till I bitched then they got it back to 1.5 mb. Then this, where they just shut it off completely, then think it's funny that I have no phone. Well, I have one more year of their Price For Life contract then I'm gone to cable. For 10 more bucks a month I can be running 5 times faster. I would cost me 300.00 to break the contract with Qwest, but aren't they violating the terms of this contract by giving me bad service? They should let me bail and not try to get 3 hundred. I think they are screwing with my dsl service hoping I'll get tired of the VOIP and want their phone service again. I see a phone war in the future-Ma Bell don't like losing customers to some upstart named DAN The Man -hahhahaa---lets raise a toast to the little man!!Lets say goodbye to high cost phones with arrogant operators that act like their doing you a favor when you call and then you get charged for the help. There should never be a fee for help with any product you buy. And there is no good enviromental reason to burn up oil to make more cables for phone companies when anyone with a computer can use it to call. But then, I also wonder how the cell phone industry managed to get people to glue these tiny pieces of plastic to their heads to walk around town talking and just throwing away money to say nothing. I have a cell phone-have not used it for months-no need-now if Dan would get into the cable tv business I would love to pay 20 a year to watch NASCAR in HD!-maybe next year

I have a cell phone-have not used it for months-no need-now if Dan would get into the cable tv business I would love to pay 20 a year to watch NASCAR in HD!-maybe next year
Thanks Gary, being a little crazy keeps me from going insane!
Sure the counter deal is disappointing, but I don't even look at them, just like "the offer is good only until midnight today" but it is still the same tomorrow. Ever see a TV commercial showing a 4" thick sandwich, but when you buy one it is 1" thick? The government calls this "fair representation." However, just try paying $1 for that $4 sandwich and see if the seller agrees with "fair representation."
I'm willing to give MJ a chance and even though I was down a while yesterday, I was happy to see a message regarding an outage on my screen. MJ may be a little rough around the edges, but I sense a real intent to make something out of it. Maybe a little Hype is OK.

Returning a "killed" majicJack
Oregon Sunset said he "killed" his MJ and got a free replacement. How does one contact MJ to arrange for such a replacement?

Just go to chat on their main page, tell them what the problem is and chances are good they will send you a new one if your complaint seems to be related to the magicjack itself. Several members here have requested and received replacement mj's.

The cord that came with mine was too sloppy in the hole( wow, that sounds familiar) so without me even asking, they sent me a new one that same day . I got it two days later. These guys are tryin hard to make it all work. And my phone today was great. Clear and no problems at all. I think that upgrade had some poitive effects. I noticed my voicemail sounds and acts better then before and one of their beautiful blond tech support ladies asked me out-WOW! great company! (some parts of this story was embelished, like the counter)
