Phone Rings Once, Then Click....Nothing!

Post by jdanniel »

Hello. I've been using Magic Jack for six months with no problems until the past month or so. I recently lost use of my screen savers, and after doing some research, found out the problem was Magic Jack related. I found a workaround on this forum, which solved the problem.

There is a new problem now: Whenever I dial a phone number, it rings once or twice, then I hear a click, and nothing else. The person I'm calling, however, gets the call. I tried calling my cell phone, and it continued to ring after I heard the click and silence. So, apparently the calls are going through, but I am unable to communicate verbally with anyone.

Also, nobody can get through to me. They get voice mail. I don't even hear the phone ring.

I do not know if this problem is related to my computer, or if it is a known Magic Jack issue. I've temporarily uninstalled some software that I thought might conflict with the Magic Jack (i.e. anti-virus, anti-malware, firewall), but that didn't help, so I reinstalled them.

The Magic Jack is connected to a 7-port USB hub that is less than a week old. All of the other USB devices connected to it are operating properly.

Does anyone know if this new problem is on Magic Jack's end? If so, is it a known issue that is being fixed, or are there any workarounds for it?

I'm using Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit, with Microsoft Security Essentials, and Sphinx Software's Windows 7 Firewall Control, if that helps. The computer is an HP Pavilion d4790y.

I have not tried the Magic Jack on another computer. However, within a few days, I am getting another computer, and of course will try it out on that one.

If you require further information to assist with solving this problem, please let me know.

Thank you! Jd

Heh...yes, it is.

Okay, things have gotten worse here. This has nothing to do with the Magic Jack, but it's worth mentioning.

I have a pay-as-you-go Verizon cell phone, and now THAT isn't working, either. When I call out, I hear a message that says, "Your Verizon features update was successful." That message loops, and I cannot make outgoing calls.

If I try to call my cell phone, I hear a message that says, "This Verizon customer is unavailable to take your call. Please try again later."

It's an incredible coincidence that my Verizon cell phone and Magic Jack land line aren't taking or making calls. Unless the two share some sort of equipment or service together, and those things are malfunctioning.

Beat me to it with the black cloud theory!!!!

Wow that is weird indeed but I would have to think they are not connected at all, unless someone went to the trouble of putting your town under a dome covered with tin foil!!

As far as your MJ goes I can only think the "lucky you" update kicked your butt. What I would do is run the MJ removal tool ( get it at their web page), then run the update manually. MAYBE somehow it got corrupted. Oh yeah a good idea is to stop all processes from running first ( except sytem ones of course) but keep the firewall up and running.

See if that helps.. As far as your cell goes I think you will have to call India and talk to "Tom" to get that resolved.

Hi Joe.

Apparently, my cell phone problem was temporary, because it's working all right now. Unfortunately, it's an older cell phone, and the recharging cable is crap--the connector is stuck in the cell phone's port!

I went to the local Verizon store this afternoon to look into a new cell phone. A hundred bucks for what I want, plus a 25 dollar activation fee! Dammit.

My guess is Magic Jack's latest update/upgrade crapped out on me, and I'll probably just have to uninstall the software, reinstall it, and upgrade manually.

I'll try that and see what happens. Thanks for responding. Jd

Hmmm....this is interesting.

I just downloaded the Magic Jack Removal Tool. I used it to remove the software, then unplugged the Magic Jack. I installed it again, and made sure my firewall is open to the Magic Jack software.

Even with the firewall open, I got the following message, after the Magic Jack software was installed:
magicJack was unable to contact our registration server.
Please check your internet connection.
If you can browse other web pages, it means our server is temporarily down. Please restart the phone again in a few minutes if it is not ready to call.
We apologize for any inconvenience.
Well, I did check my internet connection, and everything else is running. I guess I have to keep trying?

I guess it is POSSIBLE their servers are down. D/l the update from their web page and run that manually.
Also what firewall are you using? You may need to add magicjack.exe to its application section. I think if you do a search on MJ site for an error 20 it will have a PDF file that shows you where and how to add Magicjack.exe to all different firewalls..
Also of you are running wireless? Try to see what happens when you go right to the modem and bypass your router. Also might want to look into d/ling the latest firmware update on your router.

Just a few things that come to mind.

Nope, still not working.

I found the update. I uninstalled Magic Jack, ran the update, plugged in the device, and the same problem exists.

I am not running wireless, and the router firmware is up to date.

I'm not sure what to do next. Is it possible the update is just plain buggy? After all, the last one messed up a lot of people's screen savers. Could it be possible this one stops the device from operating properly?

No disrespect intended, but maybe the update wasn't thoroughly tested?

Thanks! Jd

I resemble that remark.

The screensaver issue was on purpose, MJ says, to keep the software active for calls. My update is working fine now, once I got the stupid Windows Tablet junk they added, deleted.

Is this something I should be concerned about?

Only if you've been getting installation messages that the update couldn't complete the process. MJ added processes for the Windows Tablet PC such as WISPHidden, etc. I couldn't install the update as long as it was trying to tie in with Office 2003, which I no longer had. I had to delete quite a few Registry entries associated with that addition.

I was, yes. I eventually uninstalled MJ, unplugged it, and installed the update. A screen came up, verifying my registration. I rebooted, tried my phone, and...nothing, again.

If this means going into REGEDIT and tweaking various registry keys, then I'm not sure I want to do it. I know how, and can; I just don't want to.

I had to type in DOS commands to get the screen savers working--that was no problem. But I'm tired of REGEDIT.

By the way, let me comment on the screen saver issue: Normally, I wouldn't really care about the screen savers. However, I use a special screen saver that notifies me of incoming e-mail. Because I do business via e-mail, it's an extremely valuable tool for me. It's not merely eye candy for me--it's actually an integral part of my communicating with people. So, the screen saver issue, for me, was substantial enough for me to spend a week researching a solution. I stumbled upon it, and this site, by accident.

Hopefully, the current glitch can be diagnosed and solved. Maybe tomorrow....thanks again for helping out. Jd

Maybe you want to ask MJ Support to reset your account and see what happens.

You may want to take some sedatives and chamomile tea first jdanniel.

That doesn't sound very encouraging! Am I better off just giving up?

Try plugging mj into a usb on the back of your computer. No hub, and not a front port.

No, I wouldn't give up. MJ Support doesn't have a great reputation as far as getting to the root of your problem quickly. It depends on who you get to help you. It could be very frustrating or very helpful. Patience is the key (that's putting it mildly). And no, there is no one support rep we can recommend.

One idea is to email [email protected]. Sometimes you get better help that way (not from Dan, but from a support rep who monitors the emails).

Well...I hooked the Magic Jack into the rear of my computer. It blocks the adjacent USB port, so I can't plug anything into it, but I can live without it.

As of right now, the phone is working properly. I do not know if it's due to my switching the MJ to the rear USB port, or if the problems from the past couple of days were temporary or an isolated glitch.

I'll make test calls to see if it continues to work. If it fails again, I'll follow everyone's advice here and attempt to contact Magic Jack for further assistance.

Thank you, everyone! Jd

Plugging it into the rear USB port is always recommended. Make sure not to use the included short USB extension cable that came with your MJ. It's not very good. OK, it's crappy. Good luck!

I didn't use the extension. As of right now, the phone has been working all afternoon.

I wonder why it's worked all right with a USB hub for all these months, and then suddenly not. It makes me think there was just a software glitch or something that was temporarily malfunctioning. Maybe not. As long as it's working.

I'll continue to keep it plugged into the rear USB port.

Yeah, there have been numerous glitches since the last update that suddenly vanish within a day or two...or five. Let us know what happens.

MajicJack Only Rings Once

Post by JimmyZ »

Solution: LogIn your Account/ Call Features/ VoiceMail On/Off/Delay:
Turn All on Yes for VoiceMail (computer phone & also devices (iPhone/ iPod) if they are linked to your Phone #. NOW, set time delay before message to 3 Minutes (max) for Computer & any devices attached to number. LogOut & call your Phone to hear it Ring Normally.... If you don't want it to Ring for 3 Minutes before VoiceMail, go back in and set the time down UNTIL it reverts back to ONE RING.... You will discover (& become an expert) on what delay time (to go to VoiceMail) starts this ONE RING Problem.... It might Vary but definately 25 seconds delay in VoiceMail Off starts this ONE RING Mistery with my MajicJack......
