reboot=reinstall

Post by w3a537 »

I have a windows 7 system.

I have installed MJ with all the frustrations described elsewhere in the forum.

I am observing an UNUSUAL behaviour with MJ.

At every re-boot I get a NEW Magic Jack icon on my desktop.
It looks like the software is re-installing itself at every bootup.

Is this correct?

What can be done about it?

Are you deleting the orig icon? The cd loader in startup will recreate the MJ icon if it is deleted. There is a way to boot MJ without it but I know it works with XP, no idea if it will work with 7. I will glady post it if you want to see how it works in XP.

I moved the icon and renamed it.

I have a custom desktop layout.

I now have 3 MJ icons.

Can anything be done about this other than deleting them after a boot?

Yes as I said cdloader will recreate them. I DO have a way that works on XP, but I have no idea if it works on 7. Here you go:

*****************
NO SPLASH
Install Startup Control Panel then run the application.
You can find the link in the control panel, it will be called Startup.
I had to switch to classic view to find it.

After starting the program click on the HKCU / Run tab.
You need to uncheck cdloader which is what normally starts magicjack.
Next click on the HKLM / Run tab.
Right click anywhere in the box and select "New".
On the line for Program name you can type what you like.
I typed "Magicjack Quick Start" on mine.
On the line for the programs pathcut and paste the following:

"C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Application Data\mjusbsp\magicJack.exe" /foreground /scf _magicJackPersonalDataRoot "I:\magicJack"

Use everything including the quotes.
My magicjack's drive was letter I. If yours is different then change the "I" in the path to what ever your drive letter is.
If you don't know which drive is correct drive, right click on the drive and click explore. It will be the drive with the file that is named "do not use this drive". Then click OK.
Make sure you have a check in the box in front of the key you just created then click the "x" on the top right corner to close the program.

THATS IT!!!!!!
Reboot and see if it works for you.....
I'm using Windows XP. If you are using Vista then I believe the path will be slightly different. Do a search in the forum and you will find the correct path.
Enjoy the quicker startup.

I will do an image backup of my WIN7 c: and then try
your procedure.

I will post the results so all will know if it works.

It might be tomorrow.

Thank you very much.

Again I am using XP so you might have to tweak the setup to get it to work. But it does work like a charm for me..
Nice to see someone else uses imaging. I do it several times a day and always before ANY type of tweeks and installs, and for sure before I do a Windows update. It has saved my butt more times than I care to remember!!
