$693.33 /yr is what Magic Jack cost me

Post by tom1larsen »

I had Magic Jack for 3 weeks. Then, I made 51 calls today. They shut me down. Read their stinking Terms of Service. If you make more than 50 calls in 1 day, they shut you down. So, now I'm out $40 and I got 3 weeks of lousy phone service. Stay away from Magic Jack. I wondered how they could offer a phone number and unlimited calling for a year for 19.95. Now I know, they don't offer unlimited calling. They limit calling to 50 calls. Then, they steal your money. Scam. Scam. Scam.

Steph: Hello, how may I help you?

Tom: magic jack was working great. Now it says, "Your outbound calling has been suspended for excessive usage." What's the deal?

Steph: Let me assist you

Steph: may I have your magicjack phone number please?

Tom: 8018220397

Steph: thank you

Steph: I apologize Tom but since your number has suspended for excessive use, There is nothing you can do to reverse the action

I think you entered into this deal with unrealistic expectations. Where did you get the idea they offered unlimited calling?
I doubt that many residential users call 50 different numbers in a month, much less on a daily basis.
It is pseudo commercial users like you that have forced MJ to implement policies such as those clearly stated in their TOS to prevent abuse. Nonetheless, such draconian measures as these are typical of MJ and are almost inexcusable without providing any warning but a quick scan of the TOS before you employed this device as the basis for your business would have saved you the aggravation. Perhaps if you had edified yourself in advance you would have sprung for a second or third MJ to run your business with.
BTW, you are not totally shut out. You can still receive calls and you can prepay for outbound calling for a penny per minute.
If your business purposes cannot absorb a penny/minute rate, you don't have much of a business to begin with.
Look before you leap!
Good Luck

I hadn't looked at the TOS for a whle; probably not a bad idea to review occasionally. Wasn't aware of the 50 call limit or this:

We reserve the right to reclaim any telephone number that does not make a call for a consecutive 90 days.

So, I just plugged in both and made a couple of test calls 'cause I really haven't been using them lately since Google Voice handles most of my needs right now.

Back to the topic at hand, 50 calls to as many numbers in a day seems like a lot to me and I make my living on the phone. Crackerjack and neo2121 both make good points. I didn't know about the penny a minute thing.

I don't mean to sound impertinent but if you find a better solution please share it. Good luck!

It's not nice to say scam when you never looked over the terms of service, anyone that provides a pay service will have a TOS disclosure statement.

Hope you get things working again.

Using MJ for business use is crazy to begin with. There are tons of alternatives out there that are inexpensive and much more reliable than MJ. One good alternative is http://www.callcentric.com/dids/office_unlimited this is one of the best voip providers around and costs only $8.95 a month after setup.

Funny that MJ says unlimited calling on their television ads. Sounds like someone could get sued for false advertising.

It is very very fuzzy math, but he takes the 3 weeks he had it and assumes he is stupid enough to do it every 3 weeks I guess.

$40 / 3 * 52 = $693.33
