Busy signal to one number
I keep getting a busy signal when trying to call a certain # (happens to be the cable company), but goes right through from my cell phone. Is this common?

Yes they are, MJ is blocking even MORE #'s as we speak! MOSTLY rural telco's who charge a higher than "normal" termination fee to MJ. So instead of MJ paying they have decided to block all calls to that exchange. LOTS of people on that other forum have complained to the FCC. Whether that will help, only time will tell. The downside will be MJ raising their prices to compensate..gpb59 wrote:so I take it they're not doing anything about it?
I believe MJ has something in their TOS to cover their asses..

Call anywhere in the US and Canada is still in their TOS
No. Not the last time I looked - about a week ago again.bitstopjoe wrote: I believe MJ has something in their TOS to cover their asses..
And, they''re still saying it on TV.
Or pick up a package a Walmart, Radio Shack. Walgreen's or wherever they they're being sold and look at it - it's still there too.
Here's the explanation email you get if you spend enough hours on line complaining...
"Dear magicJack Customer:
We are working on interconnecting with the telecommunications carrier for the telephone numbers you have been unable to reach. The current rates charged by carriers are cost prohibitive. There is a legal requirement for all companies to interconnect if one carrier requests to do so from the other carrier. We hope we will be successful in doing so.
In the meantime we would be happy to offer you a refund of your unused magicJack and related services per pro rata method, i.e., if used six months, the refund would be approximately $20.00.
Please return your magicJack to the following address and enclose a refund request that includes your name, magicJack phone number and full mailing address.
magicJack, LP
Attention: Consumer Issues Department
P. O. Box 16176
West Palm Beach, FL 33416
We will credit the form of payment you used to purchase your magicJack or mail you a check.
Should you choose to return your magicJack for a refund, future registrations may be prevented.
Sincerely,
magicJack Customer Care"
Oh - and the busy signal is actually exactly 3 (three) "fast busy" tones and then it disconnects you.

From the MJ TOS
" magicJack reserves the right to block calls to numbers that abuse its services such as, but not limited to, traffic stimulation numbers"
C.Y.A.......Vague enough yet it is at their discretion ( I.E. higher termination fees charge by different Tel. Co) to block...
Yep it's in there

Darn that "Evil Dan" and his "Evil Attorneys". I "think" someone else, who shall rename nameless, was assuming he had some legal backup for doing what he was doing. It sounds kinda thin, but. Oh, and BTW, where the HECK were you with that info a week or so ago, sure could have used that tidy bit of knowledge, not that it would have mattered. Would have just generated another page of "is this the kind of world you want to live in" response.bitstopjoe wrote:From the MJ TOS

Heck no......... I was not getting involved in that ruckus!!! No thank you...
I had just "assumed" one or more of the people who were arguing SO strongly had taken the time to read the TOS to see , if in fact, Dan did a CYA. I think he did...vaguely as it was. But when has being vague ever stopped Dan ( a la 20 times the normal amount of calls which will result in termination of ones account. At least now they say more than 50 calls in a day will do so).

Once you have registered your magicJack device you have agreed to these Terms of Service. You may now elect to choose the feature allowing you to make free outgoing calls over the Internet. You can make free calls to other magicJack device users located anywhere in the world, and to subscribers on traditional telephone networks or wireless networks in the United States. YMAX Communications Corporation may be the provider of outbound calling services to subscribers on traditional telephone or wireless networks in the United States, for toll free calls, and/or for international calls.
Well, we could quote portions of the TOS all day. But the best thing toi do is just complain and let the lawyers sort it out.
Complain enough and take the refund if you agree with the - we may never let you sign up for service again if you send it back - sentence that's in the refund email.
FCC, FTC, you state's A.G.'s office. Whatever you can do.

UNLESS it violates what MJ feels it abuses its service as it stated LATER in the TOS ( obviously added recenty, as is the 50 call a day limit) so it kinda superseeds.
Just like a sign says HAVE FUN IN OUR PARK. BUT no running, or ball playing.. YES you can have fun in our park all you want.. BUT not. blah blah blah.
So yes you can call ANYWHERE with MJ for free, EXCEPT blah blah blah.. It is the exception that gets you every time.

Well, I said to leave it to the lawyers....
BUT, if you insist, I can probably work in just one more rebuttal...bitstopjoe wrote:UNLESS it violates what MJ feels it abuses its service as it stated LATER in the TOS ( obviously added recenty, as is the 50 call a day limit) so it kinda superseeds.

I read it...missed it, but have known enough business owners over the years, that the smart, rich and successful ones don't do "drastic" things without one or more attorneys telling them it's okie dokie to do so.bitstopjoe wrote:Heck no......... Not too soon for me. 85% of the readers are probably doing a search on Ted and Mary Jo though.bitstopjoe wrote:I agree... I am sure someone told him, YEP you are covered so go for it and if it hits the fan, we will deal with it then..
Just like Ted Kennedy told Mary Jo when she told him she was pregnant, he said " Don't worry we will cross that bridge when we get to it"
To soon??

Just tired of arguing.
Yeah. I just...bitstopjoe wrote:HUH????????????? I was answering your question about if we can continue tomorrow..... So I said absolutely as in yes!! So I am not sure how you thought what I said was condescending , as it was not... HECK I even put a smiley face to show it was in good fun..
Are you sure that you or immediate family member are not in the employ of Dan, MJ, Ymax or any connected companies
It's just so frustrating when trying to help people (all of my blocked numbers are local calls to me - so I just have to use my land-line and it's no skin off my ass) - that when someone appears to be arguing mainly for arguments sake - I just get so tired of it sometimes.
And, the OP in this case was a newbie and I hated to watch their first experience here to be confusing and/or go down the tube...
I just think that it makes the topic harder to read (should we ever get like a news reporter to read it) and doesn't address the problem.
However, I'm hardy one to complain - I've been known to go off topic - maybe once or twice
So, handshakes all around. No problem on this end now.
Anyway, important things are coming (deer season) and since I'm off topic anyway, I will not be able to spend as much time here as I'd like to.
If they fix it while I'm gone

Nope I am an unemployed Computer Tech so no associations with Ymax or MJ. Plus I am an American Citizen so MJ would have no use for me in support
Good hunting..

Just Chiming in from rural Missouri
I don't know about anyone else, but I ONLY bought the MagicJack to AVOID the excessive charges we in rural areas have to pay to call our own local family(like a mile up the road), hospitals, doctors and schools.
OF COURSE you have to also have a land line out here since cells don't work either. Missouri must be the most backward state in the country for cell phones. Our current landline provider only offers packages that include reduced charges for a small amount of minutes & then they really give it to you after that. Not really a "deal". So it isn't really surprising that people are upset when they find out (again) that this is pretty much a rip off.
If the FCC were doing to do anything about this problem they would have done it already by making local phone companies have all calls in an area code free, maybe after the first 100 minutes(or at least within a school district). They don't care, trust me, I have complained & complained for 20 years.
Having said all that, for the moment I can call my daughter for free. Even if it only works for a month I will have saved the year fee, so as long as I get more than than, fine. When it stops working, I'll just let it expire, & wait for the next "big thing" that is supposed to help us get out from under the high fees. Oh, and I'll also tell my friends - don't bother.
Thanks for the info here, now I can stop trying the local area code numbers at least since I know they won't work & why.
My favorite is Deermeat Chili!! I can see two bucks from my window.
No, seriously - they were thirty feet from the house.

I'm not an expert on this crap, although I do try to pretend like one on occasion.skingirl wrote:

Be aware that there is another reason a call may not go through besides being blocked.
When I first got MJ, I tried to call a Florida #, and got the 3 beep response, in a not so rural area called Orlando. Turned out that there are switches or settings that don't get opened or set properly on a specific exchange or who knows what (I really don't know the process). After a call to customer service, in a few days or so, the number was working.
My point is that, in rural areas they probably are being blocked, but if you have the patience, it might be worth a CS chat to TRY to find out if it's another issue. The only risk you are taking is your sanity in dealing with CS.
