I got this thing yesterday and for the life of me I can't get the phone calls to go through the phone itself. I can dial out on the phone and hear the dial tone, but all the sound/mic go through the pc.
I'm using a hp mini netbook with windows 7 starter. I did tech support last night and upgraded every driver. I have MJ set to use the telephone and not the headset. I have been searching for hours trying different things and nothing works. Anyone have any ideas?
I have also tried with the usb extension, w/o the usb extension. If I go into the properties and the levels tab for the phone the entire tab is blank. I have never seen this before. (under control panel -> sounds -> handset properties -> levels)
I tried different usb ports and everything else I can think of.
Everything on the device manager looks ok, nothing outstanding.
Can't get phone to work. WTF

You say you can hear the dial tone and I assume you can hear the tones as you dial each number, but you cannot hear the ringing or anyone answering on the other end. Have you been able to verify if the phone on the other end even rings? Have you tried any other phone with the MJ? How much RAM memory does your computer have?

It's a long shot, but do you have another phone you can try? I had a problem with my setup after I installed the new gen MJ device. I had it set up to ring through the house phone wiring on 2 phones. Everything worked fine on the old device. When I installed the new device, I could make calls out but calls in would disconnect.gamble wrote:I plugged MJ into another pc with windows xp and it works no problem. WTF
If I would plug the new device directly into my Windows 7 computer it worked fine. So I tried an old XP machine with the new device and the "plugged into the house wiring" set up worked again. So I assumed it was some kind of a new device/Windows 7 issue.
One of the 2 phones was an older clunkier clock radio phone in the bedroom. In desperation, I unplugged that phone, and magically everything worked again on the 7 computer. I then plugged in a different phone and it still worked.
Long story short, the last thing I suspected was a phone issue since it all worked a week ago before I installed the new device. So it might be worth a shot to try another phone.
It's Magic!
My Magic Jack is working perfectly today. I have had it for years and there were periods of time when it would work fine, then I would go through a period of time when it drove me crazy. I have spent many hours online with their chat technicians which sometimes gave me a short period of relief, but it never lasted.
I used it on a PC running XP and a laptop running Vista. both performed about the same. I added memory to the old PC and that seemed to help for awhile, but problems started up again.
I used a variety of cordless phone systems and corded phones as well and they all performed about the same.
I tried different USB ports on both computers and I tried a powered USB hub. Still performed about the same.
Current status: Magic Jack sent me a new dongle and so far (knock on wood) it seems to be working perfectly on the PC. Haven't had a chance to try it on the laptop yet
