I had to reboot on my computer a couple of times. On the last reboot the magic jack did not start up. When I looked at the MJ and the hub it was connected to - the MJ blue light was on but the green light on the USB hub was off. I unplugged the MJ and then plugged it back in and away I went.
Green light now on hub...restarted the computer once more and no problem.
Could my new hub be defective?

No, sometimes MJ needs to be reseated. I have a powered hub and from time to time the same thing happens to me. I just reseat my MJ and all is well till the next time. It happened again - so plugged the MJ into a different port on the hub and I could not get it to do it again no matter now many time I rebooted. So I plugged it back into the orginal port and now it does not do it on that port. Do you think that it is still something with the MJ?
