I tried a powered USB hub..didn't help!!

Post by justus2 »

Good morning.

I hope there is a guru or wizard out there somewhere and sorry for being long winded.

I have a Toshiba Satellite A100 laptop (actually 2 of them identical and I have tried them both)
Specs are..74.5 gig h/d...2.0 gig virtual memory...512 mb physical memory...XP home edition...sp3...running Firefox.

All the USB ports show 500ma. I plugged the dongle into a seperate port and the Hawking adapter into another. Nothing else is on those ports.

I bought a powered USB hub 4port with 2.1 amps output. It only puts out 500ma which my computer already puts out. It did not help.

I am on Wifi and using Hawking Adapter...max. download speed is .75 mbps...max. upload speed is .72 mbps (that is all that the server allows)

I was having a problem with the phone not ringing but I can call out very good. I took it over to a friends who is on dsl/cable and everything works fine.

I was using a newish Vtech Dect 6.0 cordless phone and the chat tech told me to try a corded phone which I bought (and will take back). I also bought a new dongle and everything was transfered over which did not help (I now have a great paper weight !!)

In add/remove programs, it lists the MagicJack at 77.4 MB installed. I even did the update and also a restart.

In the menu..advanced users...the telephone is on and the volume is 1/3 way.

In the Device manager...power saving mode is off.
I tried it with the firewall off and also the AVG off.

All the things that I have done ...Nothing helped !!!

Does anyone have ANY ideas as to what I can check or try??

I forgot to mention that any calls goes directly to voice mail and call forwarding is off.

Thanks for any help.

I'm not a guru or wizard, but here are some ideas to try which may help to narrow things down...

Try it without the little extender cable.

Try on a completely different PC (not a Toshiba Satellite A100 laptop).

Try it at someone elses house on their PC.

Try it on a different internet connection.

I think I might have the problem solved....I hope !!

I contacted my Wifi provider and he gave me some answers. He stated that his Wifi signal only supplies a download signal strength of .750mbps (point 750 mbps) maximum. He checked on the internet and Magic jack states that there must be a minimum signal strength of 1.0 mbps for it to operate properly.

I am going to hook up to another Wifi ISP which puts out approx. 2.0 mbps and see what happens.

Of course all the time that I spent with MJ chat they didn't even know that...which doesn't surprise me at all.

As soon as I find out if it worked, I will confirm it on this board so that others don't have to go through all the hassles that I did.

Take care.

Let us know how it works over a wifi provider. Voip does not work best over wifi but is doable. To get this to work if you have a fair signal may require some tweaks. My best advice is to avoid MJ chat support.

I have the problem solved.

I hooked up to another ISP which puts out more power and it works fine...like it is supposed to. The phone rings and the soft phone screen pops up when someone calls.

I finally got to talk to the old ISP (Tengo Internet) and the advanced technical technician told me that they do not support Magic Jack. Before I paid their subscription and signup, I asked them if my Magic jack would work properly and they assured me it would...Yeah right !! He must have been on commission.

Since I first posted about my problems, I finally got an answer today after leaving messages and emails. (Still never received a reply via email).
They say on their website that they have won Awards for their support...I guess they can print any crap they want because nobody would ever spend the money to prove them wrong.

IN SHORT....If you are using a Magic Jack on Wifi...make sure that they support it and that their signal strength is powerful enough to make it work properly.

As the old saying goes...Buyer Beware

Hope this post helps others re Magic jack and Wifi.

Take care.
