"WARNING: You must plug magicJack into USB"

Post by krystav »

I've been trying to install my magicjack and all I get is the message "WARNING: You must plug magicJack into USB"...ironic since it has to indeed be plugged into a usb for that message to even come up.

I've read through various posts and tried to trouble shoot it myself but I seem to be missing the mark.

My machine is running xp with service pack 3. I have an after market usb 2.0 card installed but plugging magicjack into that gives me the blue screen/memory dump error.

So that leaves me with the usb 1.1 which per the company should work.

I have uninstalled roxio, nero, even the antivirus in an attempt to get this thing to work.

I went out today and bought an AC powered hub and still no dice.

To top it all off, the Magic Fix applet is missing. Am I totally losing it or is it no longer on their page today?

Any help appreciated.

Many thanks in advance,
Krys

so my solution consisted of:

1) updating the drivers on the aftermarket usb 2.0 card. after that i was able to plug mj in w/o crashing the system.

2) unistalled mj using this process:

1. Unplug the MagicJack USB Dongle. Go to "Start" in Windows and click on "run" and type (enter) regedit and press Enter.
2. Now Click on + Sign next to HKEY_LOCAL MACHINE.
3. Click on + Sign next to SYSTEM.
4. Click on + Sign next to CurrentControlSet.
5. Click on + Sign next to Enum.
6. Locate the folder called USB. Right Click on the Folder and Click on "Permissions".
7. In permissions Click on the Check Mark called "Allow" to the right of "Full Control".
8. Click OK.
9. Next Click on + Sign next to USB and locate folders called "Vidxxxx".
10. Right Click on one at a time and select Delete.
11. Next Click on - Sign next to USB.
12. Right Click on the folder named USBSTOR and Allow permissions.
13. Next Click on + Sign next to USBSTOR.
14. Locate the folders named "CdRom&Ven_YMAX&Prod_MagicJack&Rev" and "Disk&Ven_YMAX&Prod_MagicJack&Rev"
15. Right Click on these Folders one at a time and hit Delete.

3) Plugged device into an AC powered hub connected to my USB 2.0 port.

4) Success! No more stupid warning messages...installation went through and i've been using it w/o problems for the past few hours.

Hope this helps someone else out...

I followed your steps and it did "uninstall" MJ .... I plugged back up and it seems to go thru the USB found and install but then at the end windows crashes and tries to reboot but locks up .... I am NOT using external USB ... just the ports on the back of the machine .... I'm 99% sure they are 2.0 .. So I have to power down and when it boots back up I get a "windows has recovered from a serious error" .... MJ has added 2 drives in My Computer but they are just the Generic windows icons like its not right and of course its not ....thanks mike

Chat support says MJ not compatible with WinXP SP3

Post by MNLM »

I have the same problem -- MJ does not start up. To get it to work, I have to run UPDATE, then it works fine.... until the next reboot when I have to UPDATE again.

I went to chat support. Chat support tech "Jennifer" asked about my operating system. When I told her that I have WinXP SP3, she stated that MJ is currently not compatible with SP3. Her suggestions were to (1) revert to SP1 or SP2, or (2) wait for a MJ upgrade to address the issue.

Try this, it works for me ...

1. With MJ still pluged in, FORMAT it.
2. DO NOT UNPLUG IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! after the FORMAT
3. Look on your desktop for the MJ shortcut and Click it.. look in the folders for magicjack.exe to create shortcut to your desktop

It will restart and you just have to fill out the e-mail and password once more.
If you do not have a shortcut to restart MJ, look in the folders for magicjack.exe, right click and send to desktop as shortcut.

I noticed if you unplug MJ it will come up with either BROKEN STORAGE or thee WARNING: You must plug MJ into USB error.

The above instructions work every time, also bacdk up your contact list.. before you format it, if not you lose you contacts.

Thanks LisaD !

This is the easiest and best solution that I'd found for this problem (plus the only one that worked). I had gotten the Broken Storage message for some unknown reason MagicJack's solution to format, then unplug and replug in the MagicJack was not working. I tried your solution to just leave it plugged it after reformatting and now I am back up and running again. Thanks!

Firewall solution for Magic Jack USB Problem.

Post by david6231 »

1st off there is a lot of deep technical advice on here and nobody mentions that it could be your firewall blocking the "Magic Jack USB Port".

This solution will probably work for most of you people with that problem. It will also be the easiest one to try. Try turning off your firewall just for a moment and unplug your magic jack and plug it back in. This worked for me. I turned off my Windows XP Firewall and then plugged the magic jack in and low and behold the magic jack loaded and then it upgraded itself. I turned my firewall back on and unplugged my magic jack and plugged it back in and now it works like it should. :D

Magic Jack Warning Must Plug In to USB

Post by lo6308 »

After hours of research and trying several suggestioons, I found this very simple one and it worked....I've had a Magic Jack for three years and all of a sudden get this warning message about the USB. Have no idea what caused it. Just know that this suggestion fixed it:

Everything you said was what I went through. My system is Windows XP. While talking online to a tech, s/he gave me two links....one was uninstall and the other reinstall. After I uninstalled it and then reinstalled it, there was no problem. Here is the link I was given to remove it: http://upgrades.talk4free.com/tools/mjRemover.exe

Here is the link I was given to reinstall it: http://go.microsoft.com/?linkid=9645377

I don't know if these links will work for just anyone or they were specifically for my computer/problem. It may help to first go to their website at http://www.magicjack.com/ and scroll almost to the bottom where you will see "Customer Care/Live Agent" click that link and ask the tech about uninstalling your MJ and then reinstalling it. If that tech does not have links available for you, disconnect and find a tech that knows what s/he is doing.

I think that this is my problem! So, how do I revert back to SP2? I use an Acer Aspire One Micro Laptop solely dedicated to MJ for my home line. I do not use this computer for anything else. I can revert it back to SP2 with no concern. How do I do it?

Thanks, bagchip

I have SP3 and zero problems here for almost 3 years, however go to control panel, add/remove programs, look for Microsodt SP3 and remove it. Of course your success will depend on how SP3 was installed and you answered yes if you want to make a backup. If you answered no, then other than doing a complete XP reinstall you can not revert back to SP2.

Whoa, bagchip, hold on! You are reacting to a 3 year old post.

Jezuz, magicjack has been working around the world with SP3 for a long time.

Don't get carried away, find another more recent post to guide you.

I am not sure that you will see this reply of mine. I am not too familiar with this site! However, Here are my thoughts.

About couple of months ago I plugged in my MJ in this Acer machine. It was working fine except that every two days or so I had to reboot the Acer to to make the MJ work! I thought that some programs in the Acer was causing this problem. So, I deleted most of the programs that I would not need in the Acer. That's when all my problems started. Seeing the main post, I thought that SP3 was my problem. After you made your comments, I went back and checked the update log and found out that SP3 was installed by reg win update long time ago. So, I think now that you are right SP3 is not the problem. Now, I am not sure as to what might be causing the problem!

Any suggestions? Thanks, pb

I finally figured out what the problem was. Some how the the created MJ CD drive had an incorrect registry info. I recovered the original operating system and all worked fine! It has been several days now and I have had no problems at all with my MJ!

Thanks, for your input.
