Incoming Calls Stop Ringing

Post by Sandra162 »

My magic jack will stop ringing after about five minutes of inactive use. The phone will ring when you start the computer, but after about five minutes all callers will go straight to voicemail. If I then place an outgoing call my phone will ring for incoming calls for about five minutes then the phone wont' ring. I have spent hours on chat with magic jack and still no fix. I have tried the magic jack on another computer and it works fine, so it has something to do with my computer. I am running Windows XP and Trend Micro Antivirus. Also, I uninstalled skype on my computer if that helps.

Thanks,

It sounds like it's possible that either your USB ports or computer is going into a sleep mode. There have been discussions in here about stopping that in Win7, and I believe XP was included. A search should find you something.

Thanks,
You didn't mention whether the working computer is on the same LAN (using same router) as the one on which your having problems; so I am going to assume it is.

When you say "MagicJack will stop ringing after about five minutes" is that both the softphone and your telephone handset?

If it is both then it may be that the incoming port is closing on your router.

Try going to the start button and selecting "Help and Support". In the help and support search box enter "UPNP Framework". Follow the instruction there to make sure you have UPNP enabled.

I have tried both these solutions and I still have the same problem. Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

That's no good.

Some standard advice is to not use the USB cord that comes with MJ and to make sure MJ is plugged into a rear USB port. I would also check to make sure that MJ is being given a "High Priority" in the task manager processes. Probably long-shots but you never know.

What are your computers specs Ram/processor speed? Is using MJ on this PC maxing out (or coming close to) it's available resources? While it may not help check and see if the hard disks are turning off under power options and set them to never turn off and see if this might help. I'm wondering if your PC does not have enough horsepower to run MJ, your antivirus software and anything else you may have running.

1) What router do you have and please confirm that the other you found MJ to work on uses the same router.

2) Does you softphone indicate an incoming ring even when the phone does not ring after 5 minutes?

Router I am using is a CentruyLink 660 series
Model : EQ66R-FI ADSL Router
Power Rating: 12V, 1A
Power Consumption: 5 watt max

The other computer I used had a different router provided by Cable provider. I do not know what type.

Thanks again

As a test of the router's ability to keep the port open try port forwarding udp port 5070 to the computer ip where your MJ is located.

Thanks,
This would happen to me periodically with my old laptop that I run my MJ on. I found this little tool http://dottech.org/freeware-reviews/6801/ it keeps your computer active. Only downside is your screen saver will not come on and monitor are forced to stay on as well. I use turn off monitor app to turn the monitor off now after 1 minute. It costs a few dollars but fixes the problem for me on this old laptop. My laptop's disks would always stop spinning after awhile causing MJ's calls to go to voicemail or I would have to wait about 7 seconds to hear the dial tone when I picked up the handset. I don't know if it will solve your problem but hopefully it may help.

I have opened the ports previously mentioned and checked through device manager to make sure power to usb ports are not shutting down. Still having problem.
